    Hello

Took my 4runner ofp out today through some harsh mud and water. But unfortunately I got water in the passenger side. I have no idea how this happened ?

My guess is that i have holes drilled for body rustproof and the water came through those and through the speaker and went inside.

Is there any other way this could have happened ? Idk i am confused now. Any help or similar situation is helpful.

Also any tips to clean it off.

Do you have a moonroof? If so, it could be a clogged moonroof drain. However, that seems like a lot of water for such a cause.

I think the water came somewhere from under

The sunroof drain is near the floor.

In addition to dealing with this issue, I'd also recommend checking/changing fluid in differentials. If water was high enough to get inside cabin, it was high enough to get through breather vents inside diffs.

I would remove all the seats and pull the carpet so everything has a chance to dry properly, especially anything electronic related.

Sorry to say this, but OP should treat his car as flooded. If you let it sit, mold and musky smell, rust and endless electrical issues will follow.

@Sin4R and @Tooly are %100 correct. I'd be less worried about where the water came from and more concerned about how I'm going to clean that potential bio-hazard up. Like get seats and carpets out. Stat.

I'll never get the fascination with mud holes and water crossings in a vehicle. The cleanup and potential water damage always outweigh any perceived "fun".

Good luck finding the intrusion spot; and the cleanup.

The door seals aren't designed for submersion. Water would've also gotten in through the factory drain holes at the bottom of each door and enter through the speaker grille yes.
    • Remove all the seats and center console.
    • Remove the carpet to hose off in your driveway.
    • Remove the foam insulation under the carpet and throw it in the trash - it'll never dry properly and develop mold.
    • Spray some Deoxit in the power seat and airbag connectors.
    • Install some waterproof insulation like Noico or Dynamat.
    • Reinstall carpet. Reinstall seats, center console, and other interior panels.
    • Replace the engine air filter as it's probably soaked in mud.
    • Replace the rear diff oil if you didn't do the breather extension.
You're lucky water didn't get through the intake and hydrolock your engine, as the intake is on the passenger side. (If you sunk the driver's side, you would've killed the starter within a month.) Other parts like the evap canister, wheel bearings, and steer rack may die within a year. I'm speaking from the experience of half the people in my off-road club.
Clogged moonroof drain isn't going to leave muddy water in his rear door cupholders  You can see the muddy water line on his inner door panel. That's how deep he sunk his 4Runner:

Those aren't sliders. Those are catchers. They've got steps on them.

OP has enough problems to deal with right now, and these comments aren't exactly helpful. We all make mistakes.

Did you have fun? Looks like you left it in the mud pit too long. Like you stopped in the middle for a few moments, and shit got in. Don’t stop when in water, drive steady speed till thru.

They look like rapist Predator steps, may have even been a port installed accessory.
Then you would be covered in the smelly mud instead of your vehicle... :crapstorm:

So I somewhat managed to clean it out. @3JOH22A I was stuck in water with passenger side down and the water came through the door panels and the speaker. I took out both the door panels sprayed out the mud and debris also cleaned out the speakers. Got it dryed and sprayed some rust proof spray for now.Checked my filter and it was ok water didn't enter there maybe i was lucky enough. Prob need to Check on the differential oil.

As for the carper for now i have it cleaned with upholsary non foaming cleaner and got rid of all the mud. Looks kinda neat but need to dry it really well. I vaccumed it and used hot air to dry it initially. Haven't taken the carpet out yet but will soon.

Drying out is for clear water. Mud requires cleaning.

Looking at the water line, it wasn't just little bit mud getting in, but the car filled couple inches with muddy water. To clean that you will need to take the carpet out (and entire interior) ASAP. Longer you wait, harder it will be to get rid of odors. Once it sets in, you might not be able to sell the car, as anyone getting in will immediately know by smell that it was flooded.

And next month you'll do it all over again :D

In 2022, one guy in my off-road club ran the trail opposite to the usual direction and forgot to take the shallow side through a water hole. His Tacoma took on water. When he reached camp, 4 experienced people took apart the interior in 10 minutes. We washed the carpet in a lake and hung it on a winch rope to dry overnight. The foam pile underpad was thrown in the bed to be discarded. There was no permanent damage and he continued wheeling and upgrading his truck to this day. All part of the experience.
