Comparing TRD Off Road and Off Road Premium

Hello All,

Just joined the forum (intro here) to learn more about 4Runners. The last car I bought for myself was a 2003 Tacoma, but have been driving hand-me-down cars since about 2008. Getting the itch to finally pull the trigger on a 4Runner, which I've long had my eyes on.

This will be my daily driver and family car, I'm not going to be doing much/any off-roading. But if I'm going to do it, I want this to be my dream car and would go with a TRD package. Currently thinking a 2023 or 2024 Off Road Premium, but might "settle" for the Off Road if the right one comes along. Seems like they're almost identical except for the side view mirrors and heated seats.

Right now I'm comparing the features of the two and learning the lingo. Can anyone offer any suggestions or guidance on the major difference between the OR and ORP? Are there any other major differences other than the two mentioned?

ORP includes: Signal mirrors, softex seats, "premium" audio with navigation (same sound system with added navi), puddle lamps and a couple of other things. The factory brochure would list all the specifics and 23/24 would be the same.

 

Not a feature thing, but you might have to expand your search area to find a non-premium OR. Around here, they're nearly all ORPs.

I'm not seeing anything that I wouldn't be willing to give up in the premium, but like the idea of the couple of extra features, too.

 

I could have done without the built in navigation since I ripped it out anyway.

 

Im browsing carvana and car max now, look to be some 2023 OR's listed, but will keep an eye out for local listings to avoid that delivery fee and be able to test drive.

 

I was at your shoes in February also. Was thinking I would save some money and go with the off-road non-premium. I’m so glad I pulled the trigger on the premium edition. The soft tex seats make all the difference in the world. The cloth seats just make the interior a look a little cheaper, and stains up before you know it. Shop around get the premium. Buy once cry once. You will regret it down the line if you don’t.

 

The last rental car I drove had Apple CarPlay built in and I loved it. I anticipate using that over any built in nav system.

 

Yeah, I'm kind of thinking that too. I haven't seen either one in person, so that's a good point. This will be with me for a long time, so definitely want it to be as comfortable as possible.

 

In the minority here, but I chose the Off Road. I did not want softex seats, I prefer cloth. And I have absolutely no use for a sunroof. As far as audio, whatever comes in it stock is fine. Plus, I got a price I could live with.

If you want a!l those features, the ORP is for you.

 

My 19 didn't have carplay. Toyota was still pushing their crappy Entune interface.

 

Cloth seats vs Softex is a personal preference thing. Both offer advantages and disadvantages.

 

Huh, I didn't realize the premium offered anything other than an option moonroof, which was non-negotiable for me.

 

I never use mine because I pop the rear window down. I regret getting it over the rear sliding tray and the Barcelona Red they had on the lot.

 

I've never minded cloth seats, but I'll have to see them in person to decide which I prefer. I might even cover them to keep them clean - my CR-V drivers seat has seen better days - so might be a moot point.

 

What's a rear sliding tray?

 

Sliding cargo tray. It leaves the floor flat too unlike mine without it.

 

I had that in amorher 4R and never used it. Interesting how we all make choices.

 

First go to a dealership and check out the 2 trims. I got the ORP for the heated seats, and I wanted the manual transfer case lever. The upgraded nav is not worth it, the softer leather is nice.

have you thought about the limited? They are nice, I didn’t go that route, as I wanted something more off road ready.

 

I did, but I prefer the look of the front end on the TRD ORP vs. the Limited. For better or for worse, I'm one of those guys who wants the more rugged look of an off road truck that I will literally never take off road (except for maybe some camping with the family.)

 

I totally get it. I use mine for light trails, camping, and dirt roads. The limited would have definitely been a better choice since it's 90% a daily driver. I also bought the TRD off road because I couldn't stand the chrome front bumper on the limited. At the end of the day, we like what we like. Doesn't matter what's rational...

 

I opted for the TRD OR because I didn't want the moonroof AND SofTex (aka SweatTex). Even though I'm on the short side the additional headroom without the moonroof is noticeable. I also required a specific color AND KDSS so I needed to wait awhile for one to become available in allocation.

 

I was in a similar situation as you OP a month ago. I ended up debating between SR5 and SR5P. I didn’t want offroad, like my Tacoma, because I never used the features of OR so why pay for them. I also didn’t want a scoop on my 4R. I ended up getting the base sr5, but it happened to have the upgraded nav audio like the premium trims. Love not having a sunroof for more head space. I did want the softex but settled on Clazzio leather seat covers since I didn’t get the premium trim. No heated seats or steering wheel aren’t deal breakers, even though they would have been nice. Same with the side mirror blinkers. As long as I have rear sonar and BSM I’m happy. No complaints so far! Very happy so far!

edit: one thing I didn’t know until after purchase if it makes a difference for you: only limited and pro have remote start. Also, the app sucks for any other trims. Almost pointless. Not being able to start my vehicle from the app or even see if I left any doors unlocked or windows down I figured was a given since my 23 Tacoma had it, but nope

 

I'm just learning about KDSS. Is this a standard feature or is it an optional upgrade. Will it provide a noticeable benefit when driving on the road, or just off-road?

 

optional upgrade. I dont have it but from what I read it can be a bit of a maintenance hassle and expensive if it breaks. No idea how noticeable the difference is on vs offroad

 

If I'm being honest, I'm sure an SR5 would be plenty for the driving I do.

But ever since I bought my first car out of college in 2003, a 2000 (iirc) Tacoma, I've envied that TRD emblem. I just want it, even if I don't need it, and I'm getting to the age where I'm good with buying things I don't really need (which is not to imply that money isn't an issue, it always will be...but this will be my car for the next decade or more and I'm going to get what I want or just keep driving what I have.)

 

I wish ventilated seats were an option in the OR packages . I’ll literally never use these stupid heated seats .

 

I'll use them occasionally...get's cold here in New England. But not enough that I have to have it...never had heated seats before and I'm still alive.

 

KDSS makes the suspension more firm when traveling regular speed, and less firm when traveling at slower speeds. What does that mean, it dives less when braking and roll less in the corners. It also provides more articulation off road. I would equate it to have a "sport" suspension on the road that becomes an off road suspension when off road (at slow, crawl, speeds).

I wanted three things when I was looking for a 4R; moonroof, rear locker and KDSS. None of those were negotiable, while almost nothing else mattered (heated seats, navigation, etc.).

 

I haven't seen this mentioned in any of the used listings, but I'm interested. I'm guessing they just don't include this in the description. Are there any giveaways in the photos that would indicate that it has or doesn't have the KDSS option?
