    Lots…
Anyone thinking to add a Rivian into their family this year? Been looking and they seem solid on the Gen 2 R1S.
    Interested in your opinions.

Absolutely love the Rivians, but I'm not in that tax bracket, LOL. I'll say though it's the only EV that I would be excited to own right now. I am hopeful for the smaller model, the R2, that's supposed to come out in a few years, that seems like it might be an affordable option and a nice alternative to the 4Runner.

The S looks like someone with a huge waist but no ass. The T definitely looks better but no EVs for me and they’re like $70K plus. Also isn’t the company on the verge of bankruptcy?

They just got $5B from Volkswagen, so they should be good for a while.

I put a $100 reservation for the R2. Already own a Tesla Model 3 (Wife's car) I also have a $100 reservation on the Tesla Cybertruck but am probably going to bail out. The CT is a beast.

I was just reading a horror story about replacement parts availability for the Rivian.

Reviews of Rivian so far were positive. However, car market analysis I follow keep saying EV market is crashing - both new demand and used EV resale values are significantly down YTD. If you considering purchasing EV, I'd wait 3-6 months and lease it. You don't want to eat huge depreciation.

Also make sure you check with your insurance prior to buying an EV - as they are not designed to be repairable insurance rates are very high due to write-off danger.

I thought I read that they were on the way out as well. They had major software problems that I’m not sure were addressed yet and read about at least 1 person who couldn’t use his brand new 6 figure vehicle for months because of it. I read Rivian got him a patch so he could at least use it and stop bashing rivian on YouTube. To each his own but I would never buy an electric vehicle ever no matter what happens. Too many downsides with little ups in my opinion.

I would buy an EV if they bring down costs, increase charging speed, have a reliable public charging system, and solve old battery recycling problem. Until then, I agree - it is too much hassle and not at all green. But then we are in early mechanical fuel injection stage of this technology, so there is no surprise it isn't great and fails all the time.

Those items you list as the deterrents we agree on and it’s for those reasons I wouldn’t do it. I also don’t see the point. In my opinion the issues you state aren’t going to be resolved anytime soon.

I don’t like the wide-eyed styling and have the usual lower-volume/high-cost vehicle concerns (insurance, cost to repair, non-legacy automakers seem to struggle with parts availability) but otherwise I’m happy they’re there as a “smaller” option but they’re still pretty wide at 79”ish.

I don’t know if they support Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) but that’ll give you a lot of emergency home/off-grid power flexibility if they do.

It’s out of my hypothetical budget either way though.

If you got the money, place to charge and it’s mostly going to be a in-town runabout, you could do a lot worse.

Trading all the gas station stops for a full-charge daily plus long-distance EV charging hassle could be a fine compromise depending on your road-trip/second car situation but it’ll be annoying with all these networks wanting an account, I just want to tap my card and plug in and not mess with an app or troubleshoot a charger.

As much as people on here are hesitant about the quality of the new 4Runner, being from the manufacturer with the best vehicle quality for decades, it's odd that some of those people clamor for start-up manufacturers' vehicles that have no track record for quality.

I'd lease a Rivian. Wouldn't buy one, 2 year old R1's are selling for $50-60k.

Not where I live. Hard enough to find a gas station much less a place to charge a vehicle.

Ha, that looks like a number of roads not from my house. Barely any gas, forget charging. But, as a daily to town and back, an EV is fine.

I will keep burning fossil fuel until longer available before I buy an EV of either brand.

Household has one of each. "Air breather" and an EV. Each has its own good features. Nice to not have to go to the Gas Station for my wife's 2018 Tesla Model 3. We charge at home off our solar panels.
I look forward to taking my 4Runner to the gas station, while I am there I can pick up a pack of smokes cheaper than anywhere else!

Rivian is a dying company being propped up by the state of Illinois who also has no money lol! What a joke! From what little I’ve read, a lot of reliability issues too; I think it was ranked the worst in reliability by Consumer Reports last year. Buying a Rivian now is like buying a Daewoo in 2000, a bad idea. Plus, the front end looks terrible!!!

Rivian is now supported by both Amazon and VW group - they are not going out of business anytime soon. VW is investing $5 billion in Rivian to get access to their software since they can't seem to make any decent software of their own. This will help keep them afloat for years, and they may well strike similar deals with other OEM's. The stock price has almost doubled since this deal was announced. Their mass market R2 model, which is coming in a year or two, will supposedly cost about the same as a 4Runner - $45-50K.

We are selling the 4Runner and picking up a 2025 R1S Dual Motor Max pack in about a week. It will have 370 miles of range with the off-road package - AT tires/wheels, reinforced underbody shield (protection for the battery and entire underbody), integrated air compressor, etc. It has significantly better ground clearance and off-road capability than a 4Runner (14.9" max clearance, adjustable air suspension, etc) and no need for skid plates. We installed solar panels a couple years ago with extra capacity, so will be able to charge at home for free 90%+ of the time. Over 100K miles with gas at $3.50/gallon this will save us from buying/burning over 5000 gallons of gas and $18,000. Over 250K miles that would be $45,000 - about the cost of a new 4Runner. With our 20% preorder discount the R1S will cost us about $75K before taxes and fees. Yes we got lucky on that as I reserved one in early 2022 before they raised their prices - but it makes it a no brainer for us.

Yes there are some reliability concerns, I fully realize that we may have issues with the Rivian as they are a newer company and they are still working out the kinks. However technologically it is much more advanced than a 4Runner and it comes with a much better warranty as well: 4 year/50K mile comprehensive and 8 year/150K mile battery/drivetrain warranty.

Basically, we are getting a great deal on it, we can afford it, we want to stop buying and burning gas, and we are willing to take a risk to support an american company making a ground-breaking, fully off-road capable EV with more than enough range for our needs.

I haven't seen a Rivian owner who regrets their purchase. They're good vehicles.
They're moving closer to positive gross margins each quarter. Hopefully they become profitable in the next year or so. They make a great product.
