Ever swapped out a 2004 V6 motor to a 2008 V6? What did you have to change

Has anyone ever swapped out a 2004 Toyota 4Runner V6 motor to a 2008 V6 motor? If yes what did you have to change to get it to work

 

2006 and 2008 should be the exact same motor for the V6. You shouldn't have to change anything except parts that need replaced due to wear and tear.

 

He said 2004 V6 with a 2008 V6, any difference there?

 

I could have sworn he said 2006. My bad.

2004 will have single VVT-I where the 2008 will be dual VVT-I. The cam sensor wires will be 2 for 2004 and 3 for 2008.

So yes, you would need to change some additional things to get the later model 1GR motor working in a 2004 4Runner.

All 4th gen 1GR v6’s are single VVTI. Only the v8 had a change from single to dual VVTI.

5th gen’s with the 1GR are dual VVTI.

 

Good to know. I was only regurgitating what was posted in that link I provided.

The V8 for 2003-2004, for the 4runner at least, was non-vvit. 2005 to 2009 are single vvti I beleive.

 

Didn’t older 4.0L engines have a timing belt and newer ones have a timing chain?

I'm pretty sure if I'm not mistaken the 3rd Gen V6s had a timing belt, 4th Gen V6s and after had a timing chain.

 

The 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 used in the 4th gen 4Runners from 2003 to 2009 are all timing chain motors. This motor was also used in the 2nd gen Tacomas starting in 2005.

The older 5VZ-FE 3.4L V6 in the 3rd gen 4Runners and 1st gen Tacomas was a timing belt.

 

Generally speaking, if you change out an engine that is compatible, you need to install the engine sensors and actuators that are consistent with the original engine and original ECM.
