BFG HD TERRAIN T/A KT (anyone using these?)

Hello all, the only thread I could find on these tires was a product announcement from more than a year ago, and I'm curious if anyone is using these?

I switched to Toyo Open Country MT after being a BFG KM2/ KM3/ KO2 fan for many years, because they stopped making tires in my preferred size (255/80R17). I'll only buy E load rated tires, since I like the protection from rocks when driving on rough roads, and I see that these come in a 255/80R17 in E load rating. The treat pattern looks halfway between the KO2 and KM3 in terms of aggressiveness. They're marketed towards heavy work trucks but seem to fit the bill for what I look for in a tire (long lasting and durable).

If nobody has experience with them, maybe I'll be the first to take the plunge. I plan to replace my Toyo's after my next cross-country trip in September.

 

I looked at them, but based on their weight rating I expect them to ride extremely rough and be louder than an all-terrain. Based on their weight rating, I expect on a lightweight vehicle, like a 4Runner, they will provide many years and many many miles of dreadful driving experience.

 

I'm curious about the increased noise? I thought noise had pretty much everything to do with how aggressive the tread pattern was and these look less aggressive than the mud terrains. Keep in mind my last 3 sets of tires have all been MT's, not AT's, so I'd think noise might be a slight improvement with these tires. As for riding rougher than a normal AT, you're probably right. I have been blessed with an iron butt, and ride quality seems to make no difference to me. I greatly prefer my 4Runners to feel like a truck rather than a car. You had me at "many years and many, many miles".

 

They seem a lot like the Toyo M-55 as far as design concept. Very durable for sure, and quieter than an MT.

If they ARE like the M-55, they will have very stiff sidewalls. Depending on what you want in a tire, they may be just fine.

 

I agree with you about the tread pattern. I said, "and be louder than an all-terrain" because I think based on the carcass, heavy and stiff, but mostly because they seem between an all-terrain and mud-terrain (more aggressive than AT, but not an MT), they'd be louder than an AT.

BTW, I almost bought them for my Jeep Wrangler. I didn't; however, I'm almost sure to buy these for my truck when the BFG AT wear just a bit more.

 

Toyo Open Country MT's are famous for their very stiff sidewalls as well, and I love them for it, so yep, everything I'm hearing is making these sound pretty ideal. My Open County MT's have gotten a lot of uneven wear, which is more the fault of my alignment than anything else, but as soon as they go, these are now that the top of my list. I'm beyond thrilled to find that BFG is still making a beefy tire in 255/80R17.

 

Are they 3 peak rated?

 

They caught my attention briefly but many reviews stated how loud they got after 15,000 miles and saw a few state how dangerous they were on wet pavement. Off road and snow they get great reviews but my personal vehicle is on road more often than off road and they didn’t seem like a good fit for my use. They are good looking but that don’t get you home safe.

 

They aren't. They're just standard M+S rated. BFG says on their page that if you need 3 Peak you should go the KO route instead.

 

That's valid, for sure. BFG KM3's are atrocious in the rain and I haven't found my Toyo MT's to be any better. I just drive like a grandma in the rain. And rain is hardly a factor when you live in Washington state, like I do...oh wait...

 

I have Yokohama Geolandar MT's and find them to be ok in the rain. But, I drive conservatively in rain, also. They're definitely nothing like a highway tire.

 

These remind me of the Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ, which is apparently discontinued. Those were on my short list when I bought my Toyo AT3's in 2020.

Looks like they'd be awful in packed snow. But, nice looking tires!

 

Just a small update on this thread; I just ordered a set of these to replace my Toyo Open Country MT's, which at roughly 35,000 miles are getting bad cupping and uneven wear. I'm not blaming the Open Country MT's, my alignment has been horrible ever since getting the lift installed and I just had it fixed, so I imagine that contributed greatly to my uneven wear. Unfortunately the damage is terminal at this point, so I decided to get these HD Terrain AT's instead. I'll post a review once I get some on and off-road miles on them.

 

I love the look of them, but I got the impression that they're more for something like this:

 

They definitely are. That was what was intended when they made them, but 255/80R17 is becoming more and more difficult to find in my opinion. Tires that used to come in that size (and 255/85R16) no longer do, like the KO2's, KM3's, etc. So I was just excited to see a BFG (my favorite brand) E-rated tire with decent tread and allegedly very durable tread-life in a tire in that size. As I've mentioned in previous comments, I'm not plagued by an overly sensitive ride quality...sensitivity. My OME spring kit uses the "heavy" springs and I typically buy MT tires, and I drive like a grandma even on the interstates, so the aspect of these tires that make them unappealing to many (stiff, heavy, loud, etc) and non-issues for me, since I value durability above all else in a 4x4 tire (They're actually 5lbs lighter per tire than my current MT's). In other words, a 4Runner is probably far from what they had in mind when designing these, but for those freaks like me, it turns out to be about the perfect combo (and hopefully time and experience will back up this logic). My biggest hope is that they come close to the advertised 33.1" height (my Toyos are 33.3"), but I know BFG's tend to run famously small.

 

Just got back from getting these installed. My first observation is that I love the look. Very aggressive tread pattern, far more like an MT than an AT in my opinion. They are VERY smooth on the road and nearly silent (in fairness, my hearing could be gone from having 4 or 5 sets of MT's in a row before today ). I've got a 7k+ mile trip coming up soon, mostly highway, but I plan on getting a lot of off-roading in as well, so I'll report back once I see how they perform on dirt and gravel as well.
