VSC check engine light

Hey all,
after my son got his 2006 gen 4 in 2021 i finally picked mine up last week. Black '06 Sr5 196k.
Passed smog Friday, took it out on the rode saturday, 150 miles in VSC chk engine.
flatbed home. scan shows 0302. swap coils. same codes show. while we are messing with it the rough idle stops, all warning lights, check engine lights go off and seems to be running fine. Until we see gray smoke bellowing out of tailpipe. strong gas smell. nothing on the ground.
Lexus shop says internal failure of some sort, and need new engine. they say its not worth it to rebuild it, better to get used engine. paid around $6800.00 pvt party. Help. ideas, thoughts are welcomed.

How about getting a second opinion from another shop.

I realize you may not know, but I think it's important to know. What is the failure? This comment isn't directed at you, but generally, we have a society of remove and replace, instead of repair. You may be in a position, maybe not, to repair the engine, depending on the failure. Do you know what failed? You had smoke and a strong smell of fuel. I'm wondering what failed and if it is running rich, excess fuel. You could have an injector issue, sensor issues, a number of things that are repairable or correctable. If the shop can tell you what failed, you can decide the route to go and the cost can be wildly different between the swing of the spectrum.

I'd press the shop for what's actually wrong and if there is fuel in the oil, etc.

with radiator cap off with engine started, no gush. oil smells like oil. grayish smoke smells heavily of gas. once the rough idle stopped there were no more P codes. no water on ground, no oil in radiator. tech said it would be better to replace than repair. the failure i'm being told is "internal failure". one other thing, i also had 0302 along with a 0304. but the 304 didn't show up until just before it stopped shaking. i am going to go back and get the diagnostic sheet. btw the smoke doesnt happen until about 5 minuets after start up.

Blown head gasket, dropped valve, and or low/no compression issues do not disappear with tinkering. As mentioned, get second and third opinions.
