I raise my boys to be men and to own up their mistakes. We learn from it then move on. OP is crying because
    1. Went on a pretty technical trail without backup buddy
    2. Left the vehicle unattended in the middle of the trail.
    3. Thinks that someone went there at night to flip it over. Obviously he never heard about gravity or other laws of physics.
    4. Never thought about that the missing items just fell out of the truck during the flip.
And so much more. Sad story. The sad part is that OP didn’t receive useful lessons at home instead of a graduation gift.

well there is something to be said for having your truck fall off a mountain but being lucky enough not to be in it.

Did you air down your tyres and go in 4lo? Sorry to hear about your rig but at least you can get a trd off road now with a rear locker

But seriously… lost laptop is the bigger deal.. data in it may be irreplaceable.. 4Rs are dime a dozen. Insurance will replace.. you are simply out of some $$$. Not a big deal. Move on

Insurance broker here. I can only speak for my locality, it would be treated as any other claim. They would determine if you're at fault, or not at fault. Our insurance regulations had few exclusions such as driving while intoxicated, racing or a speed test etc. Even if they for some reason believed this to be intentional, they would require some proof to be able to deny a claim.

In a scenario where you crash your vehicle off road you would be at fault and it would be covered under collision coverage if you carry it, and subject to your deductible. In OP's situation it would be covered under comprehensive due to being vandalism and subject to his comprehensive deductible.

Each locality will have their own insurance regulations and I implore OP to find a copy of them so he can review the exclusions and know his rights. Unfortunately like any industry there are good adjusters, and bad adjusters.

Interesting, thanks for the explanation. But...you're in Canada...you guys smile and apologize to someone who keys your car, right? Canadian insurance companies may be similarly polite. :D:p

First, let me say I always like it when people have a suspicious mind...I'm the same way (some careers will do that to a person lol). To play devil's advocate, even though how he worded it made it seem that it was a kindness done to him by someone else, he could have meant that it was a "gift" he bought himself. I've been known to do that once or twice myself, after a major life event when I treat myself to something nice, although "gift" probably isn't the best word to use. :D

Hahaha. My personal observation is that the government regulations lean slightly too far to the consumers benefit. A lot of people here believe insurance companies will do anything they can to deny a claim, when in actuality they end up paying more things out than they even should. Not bad when you're on the receiving end but hurts premiums for everyone.

I'm sure someone helped the gravity since valuable things are missing and not scattered around the hill. Can you geolocate laptop, kick in their front door and take it back?

Insurance contracts are contracts of adhesion, meaning when there is something ambiguous, or that needs to be interpreted, it is interpreted in favor of the consumer, customer. So, you are right, the insurance company has to pay out more often because of that, and.other things.

in my career, we call it 'professional skepticism' and its a requirement...

but I empathize with anyone who loses something significant to them...
and a guy who loses something I also appreciate like a 4Runner with some memories...

I don't need to fact check him to say 'sorry man, good luck'
and I don't need to be jealous if he got that car as a present

I doubt anyone here would argue with either of those two points. I'd be surprised if glwood54 fact checked him out of a sense of "need", probably more curiosity, a trait which should always be applauded, IMHO. I also haven't seen anything to indicate that folks in the thread felt jealousy at his "gift". I think those of us who have raised children of our own into adulthood look at a brand new 4Runner as a graduation gift more with an eyeroll than any other emotion. I can't speak for anyone else, but I have witnessed plenty of situations where extravagant gifts to young adults bring more harm than good. I've seen far more than enough expensive cars wrapped around telephone poles with teens behind the wheel than is healthy for a lifetime.

@124runner Wow, I been there one time with my 4runner with it was still stock back in 2021. I recently drowned my 5th gen 4runner, got it for myself right after I finished school in 2020 and was supposed to pay it off this year. Check out my video here, maybe this will make you feel better. I got cashed out from AAA but also my insurance premium did increase. Basically got the car brand new at Longo Toyota for just alittle under $45k and AAA gave me about 41K and some change. I still owed about 7k so I got back about 33k and some change. Used it to pay off some bills then I picked up a 2024 Tundra. I wanted another 4runner but I was to dam hurt so I didn't do it. I do plan on buying another 5th Gen in a couple years though once I get my Tundra down. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuTes9cm1LM

As of right now, it's still listed in Copart: https://www.copart.com/lot/53804844/2020-toyota-4runner-sr5sr5-premium-ca-fresno

Wow …. I would have never seen the vandalism/ comprehensive angle…. That’s good news!! I have USAA which does a great job covering you as the indemnified. (If you are the other party filing against USAA…hah haha…. Good Luck , cause they will fight you tooth and nail.) I originally viewed this simply as an at fault collision claim (like hitting a pot hole), pay the deductible and look forward to higher rates in the future. BUT now…. I see this as a possible vandalism claim….

OP…Sorry for your loss. If you wouldn’t mind, please keep us posted as to how your insurance files this. And when it is finally resolved I’d love to know the name of the insurer.

It seems my curiosity regarding the graduation gift hurt a lot of other members' feelings. All posts deleted. RIP @124runner's ride. GLW insurance claim.

Very sorry to hear and I appreciate you posting your experience. I'm glad you or anyone else wasn't injured as this truly is the most important part.

Personally, I'm terrified to go off-roading because of my fear of something like this happening (with me, wife, dog, friends in the vehicle). I'm curious how common off-road accidents are as I don't hear about them often. I recall a story where someone in Colorado rolled their jeep trying to help someone else and their passenger became paralyzed after their vehicle slid on some gravel and rolled down a hill.

I do realize that there are great experiences to be had with off-roading. Is there a good reference online guide for beginner/easy trails? I know my limits and will never attempt anything remotely moderate. Beginner/Easy off-road trails will also be my absolute max.

Good luck on the insurance claim of your vehicle.
