So I have a new (to me) T4R SR5, with about 35k miles on it. Been learning all the features and functions and configuration details, and I tried the remote start trick where you push the Lock button three times, holding it down on the third push, and the car starts. Mine flashes after each push, then after holding the third push for a bit the light starts flashing, but does not start the car. Is this configurable to get the start to work? Does it require some option I don't have? Am I holding my mouth wrong? I'm told if it flashes, that it'll start... do I have to have a setting changed? Or does the SR5 level just not have remote start? I'd appreciate the input of more educated T4R owners. Thanks!

The remote start only works on Limited and Pro trims. You’ll need to install an aftermarket remote starter. I was surprised by this as well when I bought my ‘24 SR5. I assumed we had it since it’s been in all Tacoma trims for years.

There's usually a sticker on the inside of the engine bay warning of a remote start that has been installed.

Ah, that's what I was afraid of. I have seen a screen from the Toyota laptop that shows a setting where it can be enabled or disabled. Is it the case that it's just disabled, or not there at all? Seems to me all the circuitry is there to make it a software toggle; is this the case?

As mentioned, only the Pro Bro and Limited get it in the US from the factory. There's nothing to enable to make it work.

Great question. I’d assume no, but I can’t say for sure. I assume it’s not as simple as enabling a setting since there are discussion threads on here about aftermarket remote starters and install videos.

I'm looking into this as well. I want Remote Start for our 2024 TRD OffRoad Premium. I prefer something that I can install myself that doesn't require a subscription service like my Wife's Lexus does. I did see there is a vendor that sells one in 2 flavors (Auo-Shutoff with Driver Door open or No Auto-Shutoff when Driver Door opens). I can't recall the name of the vendor, but I did see it on here a while back. I'm not sure if the Auto-Shutoff version is more reliable/stable longterm over the No Auto-Shutoff version.

As mentioned above, only Pro and limited will come from factory with remote start. The wiring is the same but the ECU is not. Aftermarket units like accessorides ( which I use for my Gkey model ) now have the ability to override the door shut off for push start models. These units use their own receivers and brains.

Accessorides and N2designs units come plug and play. I'm sure there are a million other ones out there.

Interesting that the lights flash like it’s trying to remote start. Makes me think it’s capable, just needs a setting adjusted.

I imagine all the fobs are set up to be capable of remote start, but if the vehicle doesn't have that capability built in, all you get is the blinking lights with no start.
