Clicking/popping noise front end on articulation

After 12k trouble free miles my 2023 4Runner is making a popping/clicking noise it’s noticeable when I’m pulling into my driveway which is uneven but I hear it at low speeds when doing a u turn or even in parking lots, already ruled out uca, skid plates and spare tire also made sure to have everything torqued to specs including the lca bolts

I suggest you listen to music. Try Viper cut as well, it should help.

 

Have you greased the slip joint in your axle?

 

Would be odd at 12k miles but maybe CV Joint?

 

Doesn’t sound cv related more like coil springs binding or something along those lines forgot to mention I have bilstein 6112s

 

It’s your lift 4 sure. Adjust the preload

 

CV would make a different clicking while turning not when straight.

Nothing is touching or near your springs?

Same question for sway bar?

 

Correct triple checked and retorqued those as well

on tacomaworld a lot of people have similar noises with their 6112s, my next step is to eliminate the brake pad shift (if it is shifting that is)

 

Yeah looks like a lot of people get this noise. Spring shifting around and going over bumps and re-settling?

IF that's what it is I wouldn't worry about it.

 

Did you check the three bolts coming up through the shock towers on the front?

FWIW- I have 6112s and do not have that sound.

Which model 6112 do you have? I was, initially, sent a set for a 4th Gen 4Runner. My research showed they would probably work, but the lower shock mount width was narrower than stock. This would require "squeezing" the mount on the LCA to prevent the shock from shifting.

 

Is this a picture of the rear suspension on your 4Runner? If so, I believe the top washer is installed upside down (or mine is). Was all this installed at 88 Rotors per a previous post of yours? If so, it'd be worth taking it back and having them check things out.

I did bring it to 88 rotors they said they didn’t know what it was and blamed it on the brakes and said it might go away on its own

 

It’s worth checking if the lower shock mount tabs on the LCAs are squished down onto the lower shock eye.

The lower shock eye is vulcanized to the rubber bushing. If the tabs are bent down onto it, it won’t have the same metal to metal grip on the eye and they might rotate around the tabs as the LCA moves. I don’t think the eye should move at all relative to the tabs for the bushings to work correctly. Potentially, a metal eye rotating within the metal tabs could make noise as well.


Technically an undersized eye might “work”, if you don’t mind damaging your LCAs. I doubt the tabs would deform enough to “grab” the eye well enough if you used the factory torque setting though. So there is a potential they torqued them to factory specs, which could leave the lower eye bolt floating loose between the tabs. Use a good flashlight and phone camera to look for any evidence of deformation, a gap, or non-flat interfacing between tabs and shock eye.

 

Just for fun,.. pop your hood (unlatch it) and do the same drive into your driveway.

I have the latest model and I verified it was for a 5th gen when I got it. It was pop/click free the first 12k miles

 

funny you mention that, on tacomaworld guys with the 6112 have that problem and pop click noise and their fix is to use the 4Runner bolt that goes thru the shock eye

 

I had same noise. Turned out to be the LCA cam adjust bolts. They were originally seized from corrosion and shop replaced with their own instead of using OEM. After getting them to replace with OEM and properly torquing to 130 ft/lbs, the noise was gone.

 

Ok I was able to have my neighbor help me and he said the noise is definitely coming from the rear tire brake area

 

Even if it's already warmed up? My exhaust make a bunch of clicking sounds as it heats up.

 

Yes I’ll always here in when pulling into my driveway and there is articulation since my driveway has dips

 

This is a long shot, but I had a sound like that on my '23 that I thought was shocks or bushings on the rear control arms or trailing arms. The sound was on articulation, but I couldn't replicate it by pushing the vehicle in various directions while it was stopped. The real culprit were the hatch hinges and latch needing lubrication (I used white lithium grease spray).

There are a couple threads that mention it, although not as many as the hood latch sound.

 

It wasn’t the hatch I drove into my driveway with the hatch open and still makes the noise, my buddy with a 23 4Runner (same year as mine) said his makes a similar noise also coming from rear tire area his is stock
