OK, that thought crossed my mind, since you were on a beach. I just couldn't imagine the need for more than one or two poles in use at a time. The idea of keeping 18 lines from getting tangled sounds like a nightmare to me, but alas, I know nothing about surf fishing.

BTW, I like your avatar photo! Is that a Los Angeles class? I got to tour one once, as well as a Sturgeon, in Pt. Loma.

He's got more than usual, but 6-8 tubes is typical for surf fishing on the East Coast.

yep a 688, USS Omaha SSN 692, I was the first Skipper. Taking it from building yard Electric Boat to new homeport Pearl Harbor in 1978

re fishin’ poles. Typically 2-4 people fishin’, various fish size so need for different poles. Also surf size and/or slope of beach can dictate need. And you need back up in case of rod failure.

    I appreciate the explanation.

And that's awesome about being the skipper on a fast attack boat! Something very few people in the world can say.

It was perfect! I also added a Detroit Locker to the rear axle. I had it for a couple of years and sold it to buy something that got better gas mileage. I bought a Chevy RS Impala that can get 30 MPG if I drive it easy.

The fact that 4Runners sacrifice interior storage versus all of their competitors is a feature that illustrates the amazing focus of the brand. 4Runners have wonderfully generous ground clearance. My stock SR5 has taken me through 16 inches of virgin snow. Try that in your Subaru. There have been several other times that the ground clearance has been necessary for me and the vehicle emerged unscratched when I feared real damage. And many times where the ground clearance gave me the confidence to go places instead of bailing out and turning around. So YES that means all the heavy duty powertrain components get pushed up into the passenger compartment. Look at all of the empty space around the engine in the engine compartment. I'd love to see a comparison of engine compartment temps against normal vehicles (Astros are cool, do they typically go 300,000-400,000 miles on original powertrain?). With ten foot boards I can almost close the rear window and even with a 15 foot canoe popped in I don't need a red flag.

Sure my wife's CRV has 10 inches more rear legroom (40" vs 30") but the rear seat passengers already have much more room than coach seating on airlines and they ride for free.

The 4Runner has .3" of ground clearance over a Subaru (9" vs 8.7"). The "offroad" versions of the Subaru (Outback and Crosstrek Wildderness) has 9.2" - 9.5" of clearance, more than the 4Runner.

Thanks for the all the input and the ball busting! When I owned the van, I had a 15' Carolina Skiff and a trailer in a campground near the beach 65 miles away. The AWD van was my daily driver and did everything, including towing & launching the boat.

    Most people couldn't believe what I had in that van;
    Complete automotive tool kit.
Trailer supplies and parts for maintenance and repairs.
The boat cover and its framework when not on the boat.
A 100 watt portable solar charging system (in a box) for my boat's 2 trolling motor batteries when not mounted on the trailer's winch post.
    Eight 7 foot fishing rods.
An empty Igloo 48 qt cooler for ice, fish, clams crabs, etc.
Plus all the other stuff that we'd need to shuttle for the trailer and anything else going on wherever.
Everything fit inside nicely with no vision loss, mess, noises or movement.
Everything had its place, with room for the stuff for water related activities of the day.

I sold the boat and trailer two years ago, and the van was telling me she was tired, so I traded it before it disintegrated like Jake & Elwood's car. It took 4 months to decide on a 4Runner, and another 5 months to find an Worth buying (to me.) But now, I'm thinking about the shore again................

I like the shelf idea, and will give that a go if I can do it without the Molle panels. A project for the future.
In the meantime, I'm borrowing or buying a hitch cargo carrier to see how it feels.

Where are y'all getting this "4Runner has less interior space than the competitors"? From my research, the 4Runner has the largest cargo capacity of any midsize SUV (Pilot/ Passport are debatable, but Honda also measures the space differently somehow). Being a rectangular box certainly has its benefits.

Or do you mean number of cubbies or something?

I had the same feeling, I thought I remembered from researching these that the 4Runner had pretty much Best in class interior space. Just looked it up and confirmed, 4Runner has 21 cubic feet more than the previous year Grand Cherokee.

Like you said, the square shape helps, the Grand Cherokee has the fastback look that I'm sure it eats up a lot of cargo space. My '07 Volvo wagon is the same, pretty much a rectangle shape with great space inside.

I found on my Grand Cherokee it had MORE STORAGE room. Cherokee had room UNDER SEATS that 4Runner does not have. So for me I wanted to keep passenger space open for dog or other passengers. Considering 4Runner has NO UNDER SEAT storage I am unable to carry the stuff I carried in my Jeep. Such as tow straps, tools, first aid kit etc. The 4Runner may have more passenger space, which shows as CARGO SPACE, but it has less NON-PASSENGER space [used for OTHER STUFF]. Grand Cherokee also had room in spare tire well, which was inside vehicle, not outside underneath like 4Runner. I used that space also for tow shackles, duct tape and all kinds of other crap.

I have a 2014 JGC and a 2019 4Runner. Can confirm, after many family road trips and load outs of mulch, the 4runner has quite a bit more interior space
