Anyone else get knocking with 87 octane?

23 bought new and it was fine on 87 until about 15k. Now I’m getting occasional mild detonation just on part throttle unless I run premium. I have tried different gas stations but no change. Yes I’m under warranty but Dealership has been utterly useless.

Anyone else experience this and were you able to resolve it? I’ve already tried fuel injector cleaner.

Might try a different dealership. Make Toyota deal with this problem. Don't make it yours.

I've run 87 Octane, with 200 pounds loaded, 400 lbs of armor, 34" tires at 115 degrees outside with no detonation.
You've tried multiple gas stations so I'm gonna assume that something else is up here.

The single VVT-i 1GR was prone to high load, low RPM knock. It was very light but still there. I switched to 91 and it went away plus I supercharged anyway. In the runner I run 91 for the same reason but I don't remember any knocking on 87. I don't run 91 for more power that's not there.

I run 87 on both my Runners and have zero knocking. Agreed with 1SilverRunner. Find a different dealership. Your engine is rated to run on 87 and shouldn't knock.

Appreciate the replies. I will try another dealer but issues like this can be very hard to diagnose so any info from someone who’s been through it would be helpful.

My buddies 2016 SR5 never seen 87oct as far as I know. He pumps cheap 85oct and I have driven it few times and never felt knocking. Right now it has over 70K miles I believe.

    No knock here.

A recording could help in the dealer discussion.

    Fully agree with this approach.

Unless you running bad gas, it should not knock on regular. However, do consider that you might be getting bad gas if you always fuel up at the same station. Especially that now that some stations started doing 15% ethanol without telling customers.

Have you tried running a higher grade to see if it goes away?

How would one know if you have a knocking? Is it obvious?

Nope, 87 works perfect and is what the manufacturer recommends.

It’s audible, so yes, it’s obvious. My issue is minor and sporadic but shouldn’t be happening at all.

    None for me on 87.

Maybe a tank of bad gas?

My 13 was always fed 87 (with the 10% ethanol) and never knocked, even to the day I traded it on my 23. So far my 23 has no issues with 87 but only has 3500 miles on it so that isn't definitive. Hopefully its just bad fuel related and goes away.

Combustion chamber deposits can artificially increase the compression ratio. Add some Lucas fuel injector cleaner in one tank of gas. If I’m wrong you are out $10.

    Interesting.

About to open a can of worms here...

I've been running 87 but recently fueled up with 89 after reading about OTT tuning.

Their dyno graphs shows a 10 foot pound of torque increase with the switch to premium alone. No tune. The computer doesn't detect knock and advances ignition timing just a little more allowing for more mid range torque. I've claimed before there is no performance benefit to running high octane fuel in these cars.
According to OTT, I was wrong.

I will likely continue to run 89 or 93. Especially on trips, off roading, or any other high load/ high temp scenarios.
Getting an OTT tune soon. Running 93 Octane + OTT tune should grant nearly 20 pound feet of usable torque above 87 octane with no tune.

Once tuned, I'll still be able to run 87 without problems. The computer should detect knock and retard ignition timing when needed.

It also says persistent knocking can cause engine damage.

I'd run higher octane fuel if needed. If you really want to run 87 have the dealership dig into it.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
Another way your 4Runner can kill you: By driving you into the poor house because you're constantly buying mods or add-on's. Seriously. They need to put that in the owners manual. "Purchase of this vehicle may cause you to cash in your savings account for unnecessary upgrades."

Could altitude be a factor? Not sure where you are driving around.

I'm in Colorado where 85 is everywhere, and at Costco they usually have either 85 or 91, no in between. I haven't tried 85 yet but I imagine it'd be fine? I notice nothing different running 91 from Costco versus 87 from a different gas station, but again I haven't tried 85 yet.

I haven't tried 85 either. I normally pump 87. If not available I use 91 from any top tier gas station.

In my two long 4R road trip (5k and 6k miles), I used 85 where I had to without any noticeable difference.
