Besides the 5th gen, what other vehicles do you own? Looking for a 2nd vehicle (Gas Mileage))

The wife and I are in the market for a 2nd vehicle (preferably a 4 cylinder or hybrid) for gas mileage purposes. We have used the 5th gen mainly as are weekend vehicle and need something more practical for daily driving. She has a 2018 IS 350 Lexus and I have a 1991 Honda Civic that we are looking to consolidate down to one vehicle. Her 2018 is nice, but is terrible on gas and requires 91 octane. My 91 Civic is as bulletproof as the 5th gen, but is just very old and time for replacement.

I am looking at the new 11th gen Civics, but I'm not convinced they will go the distance as my 91 Civic did. It seems like they just don't make vehicles like they used to. For example, the 10th gen civic has a major issue with the Air Conditioner System - if I'm buying a newer vehicle I need AC working . I am also very concerned about the longterm reliability of the CVT transmissions and any of the 4 cylinder turbo engines. I'm hoping we can get at least 200-250,000 miles out of the new vehicle as I am getting out of the 91 civic. Buying used just doesn't make sense with how expensive used vehicles are as well.

I'm not completely sold on EV yet either.

I'm feeling like Corolla, Civic, Camry, Accord may be our best bets, but wanted to see what other 5th gen owner's experience has been. Maybe another make I'm overlooking?

I sold my 4runner and bought a hybrid accord. Love it. Almost 50 mpg.

 

2006 GTO 6 speed that I like never drive. I need to swap the shifter and go to an aluminum radiator. Also needs some TLC with new fluids and bushings.

 

2010 Outback with 243k miles. It gets decent mileage (28.2 in mixed driving, up to 32 on the highway), but its days are numbered. I think it has a cracked exhaust manifold, so I haven't driven it much in the last six months.

 

A 2018 Tesla Model 3 Long Range. Wife's to and from work vehicle and fancy night out transport. She's really tough on vehicles, noting broken, bent, chipped or otherwise...ok, 3 broken windshields. Does that count?
1 set of tires, new cabin filter, that's it in 6 years of ownership.

 

Corolla hybrid is the answer. Of all the CVTs out there, I only trust Toyota's.

 

Before my 4Runner I had a 2018 Tundra limited. I was on the road a lot so decided to get something for on the road better gas mileage. I bought a 2017 Corolla and kept the Tundra for a pleasure ride. Ended up selling the Tundra and kept the Corolla but bought a 2020 4Runner Venture. That’s all I drive now. The 17 Corolla sits in the carport with only 21,000 miles on it. Just couldn’t stop driving the Tundra or 4Runner

 

Wifey’s car is a 2021 Toyota RAV4 XLE Hybrid All Wheel Drive. NO sun roof.

Both of us love this car. It’s been trouble free, great gas mileage, enjoyable to drive.

Ours is NOT the plug-in version. I have NO interest in the one you have to plug-in all the time. I don’t see the sense of that what-so-ever.

It’s my fiancé’s car she drive about 30-40k per year and we have family in a 30-50 mile range so it’s the car we typically drive out. Plus it’s got the “full self driving” suit

 

If i was to get a 2nd car it would be a Mazda 3 or the like, Mazda is what Honda used to be (reliable and good technology).

Has decent gas mileage as well for a gas only.

2017 Prius. Average 50 mpg and just oil and filter change. That’s the running around vehicle while the 4Runner is the long distance traveling.

 

2016 Winnebago Minnie Winnie 22r built on a Ford E350 SuperDuty chassis. This coming may 2025 we will have had it 5 years. 30 RV trips, some local some as far north as Yosemite.
I get to take it once or twice a year for a boys trip out to the desert at a buddies place for shooting and drinking weekend. If you own an RV, you don't worry about gas mileage.

 

Our other vehicle is 22 lexus nx f sport. Even with a regular driver of 0 to floored. Regularly racing nobody. And still gets 24mpg on average. Hwy around 30.

 

Hard to go wrong with a Civic, Corolla, Camry or Accord. The latest Honda hybrids are all rated too in their class and would likely be the most fun to drive. All Camrys are hybrid now and for pure reliability the 2.5L hybrid in the Camry is well-proven with many years in production. I agree that the one vehicle you may have forgotten is the Mazda 3; it's a great choice if you want well-executed old school technology with no CVT.

My SO has a last-gen HR-V and it’s been a fine runabout.

Fuel economy overall in the high 20’s, low 30’s highway, it’s a basic crossover with handy seats the new model did away with.

Honda CVT’s don’t usually fake shift, but it is a concern whether it’ll last as long as an equivalent automatic. that said, fluid changes are doubly important at a much shorter interval and I just did one on a family CR-V.

I’d go for something like a Corolla hybrid or hatchback (sadly not available in hybrid) if it was me personally.

Honda’s Civic hybrid is pretty compelling to me too (no CVT as you know them in that one!) but if you decide to live with the CVT the gas model is still an option - albeit I believe Honda uses direct injection only.

But as a second car, Honda’s usually superior use of space would matter less.

If meant for local trips, a Chevy Bolt would be neat. A basic electric car without the techno-cruft, full charge every morning (if you have the place to charge it), reasonable prices.

If annual mileage is low though, I’d probably choose between gas Corolla or Bolt.

The gas Corolla Cross I got to rent was good for the most part. “Modern” appointments like stop/start and the CVT drove nicely. Beware that the hybrid doesn’t come with a spare.

Edit: I FORGOT ABOUT MAZDA AND THE YARIS, I’d try a Mazda3, Mazda2 if older.

2020 Yaris came with a 6 speed too.

 

2000 BMW M Roadster Not all that great for MPG either but that's not why I own it.

 

My wife has an '23 ES300h which is great, gets about 45 mpg, my daughter, who is now in college had a '21 Prius prime which can plug in and get about a 27 mile range but under normal gas hybrid use gets about 55 mpg. I drive the Prius now on my commute during the week and its great. $runner is now reserved for weekends/towing/hauling multiple kids around etc.

The Toyota prime series that are hybrid and can also be plugged in are awesome. I am able to charge at work for free, so I get a free drive home in the evenings.

 

Tesla....you can get low mileage pre-owned tesla for pretty cheap right now.

 

When I retired, we sold our Frontier and Pathfinder and bought a late model 4Runner (2019 SR5 Premium with 17K miles) and a 2014 Rav4 AWD with 22K miles. We both have been Toyota fans and wanted the reliability with no car payments. Paid cash from my 401k. Earlier this year, we decided with both of us retired, we didn't need two cars, so we sold the RAV=got over 15K from Carvana. Both cars performed great here in the PNW but we needed to keep the larger 4Runner, although we miss the mileage of the RAV

 

I got a 2024 4Runner TRD ORP. Wife got a 2024 RAV4 Hybrid.
I get best around 19-20 mpg, she best gets around 40.1 mpg.
Took the 4Runner to the beach and camping, we take the RAV4 on other trips.
So far, I really like the combination and options.
I considered the 2024 RAV4 Prime, a plug-in hybrid, but the markup was too much for me.

 

Tesla MYP over here. Same, just changed tires after two years of ownership but nothing else other than that. Though the panels and interior looks and feels flimsy as shit.

in the market today, I’d probably go for a hybrid from Toyota.

For bulletproof reliabilty 4cyl can't go wrong with a Corolla.
