Hello, I am new to this forum and needed some assistance with my 2012 SR5 4Runner. I have not used it much recently. Last week I took it to get a smog and it seemed fine and passed smog. I tried using yesterday and I turned it on and struggled to stay on. I tried it again and it struggles even more. The A/T temp like turned on a for moment as it struggled and it turned off and I have not attempted to start again. Any ideas what can be happening?

    Welcome.
A few more details and a video may help more. When you say that you haven't used it much recently, can you elaborate more?

The more details you can provide, even if you don't think something matters, the more likely you are to get the help you need.

I do not use it much. I’ve never used the 4x4. It’s 100 degree weather where I am at. I’m afraid to attempt to turn it on again since it does not want to stay on. I’ve check all fluids that I can see and everything appears to be fine

Have you had your battery, starting and charging system checked/inspected?

Suggesting this after you mentioned you do not use very often?

    Welcome to the forum.

about 2 weeks ago it did the same thing but I didn’t think much of it. It wanted to turn off but I put into gear and it stopped acting like it wanted to turn off. I drove it less than 10 minutes to my destination and it was fine. I even idled for a good amount of time waiting for my child. I drove it to the smog shop last week, everything seemed fine, it passed smog. i am afraid to turn it back on, hoping to avoid as more damage. Trying to figure out if k should have it towed. I am not mechanically inclined, but I have someone who is but not super familiar with 4Runners.

I don’t believe it is the battery. It starts up, it does not hesitate until it’s running. Turns over just fine. Doesn’t seem to be losing power

I purchased it used in 2016 and purchased a new battery a couple of years ago.

Sounds like mice chewed up injector wiring.

    Except that it passed smog??

However, it is a very strong possibility.

Depending on how long it has been sitting, other things come to mind:

How old is the gasoline that is in the tank?

not that old, I drive it every few weeks on the weekend. Not a lot of gas in tank but light is not on. I just don’t understand, I just drove it a week ago when it passed smog. It didn’t have any issues when completing smog.

not sure if I mentioned, the A/T temp light did not stay on very long but the motor didn’t want to stay on very long either.

Open the plastic cover over the intake and the fuel injectors will be exposed. There have been numerous forum members that have been victims of rodent damage to their wiring harnesses. Good luck

If you have rodent damaged wiring, then there are all kinds of interesting scenarios that could happen because your trucks computers are not getting proper signals.

Similar happened on my old Chevy Impala. Vapor lock or clogged fuel filter?? Mine would start but cut out at speed. Kinda gasped (?)
