I have a 2016 SR5 Premium with sunroof and third row just to give info. I have 19,800 miles. Last week on Thursday driving about 40mph I heard a bang/pop noise. Pulled over nothing broken, no difference in driving, tires are all okay, no bottles in car(was 95 degrees outside). Drove another 40 minutes and no issues no lights on dash. Drove today in traffic 10-25mph also 95 degrees outside and heard it again. I’ve driven through the days between of last Thursday and today (Tuesday) with no issues. Only heard the noise last Thursday and today. Anybody have an idea?

Last time that happened to us we found found out the next day that someone had thrown a rock at us while driving. Left a sizeable dent on the door :D

Funny timing, I just heard an unexplained hollow “thunk” from the right side of the vehicle around 40 MPH driving straight this morning too.

Haven’t looked at it yet, it’s currently cooler here, didn’t see any debris behind me. I’ll take a peek later.

Last time I heard something similar on a forum, a loose spoiler on the hatch of a Sorento was the apparent culprit. The poster thought it sounded like a basketball striking the hatch when it made popping noises.

Edit: Nothing, I'm assuming it was a rock kicked up.

Forget the noise. You have an 8 year old 4Runner with less than 20,000 miles?!

Chicago, huh? Could be gunfire and ricochets.

Even if you haven't driven on gravel, it could still be a piece of debris kicked up by a tire or temporarily caught in the tread and subsequently ejected.

Maybe random rocks stuck in your tire treads that finally wiggle loose and fling up into your wheel wells?

I’ve seen a rock in a rotor that made a god awful noise. I don’t think they could get it out either & the girl had to buy a new one. It was like 1 in a million type thing

I work at the Toyota in the Service Dept. I just had the Master Technician check and looks like it may have been the driveshaft yoke. I had undercoating done a year ago and it was on there probably drying it out and now with the intense heat probably became gooey. Took off the coating from the driveshaft yoke and greased see how it goes.
