Sorry if this is a stupid question but are they functional? I haven’t seen them used for luggage, snowboard/skis, etc. ps I’ve only owned mine for 6 months

Yes, they are functional but in a general way. With only 2 cross braces, it's limited to rigid items.
When I use a soft sided bag, I lay a small piece of plywood to create a bottom for it.

If a rubber mat is in direct contact with the painted surface, the paint will get scratched up.
That's why I use a piece of plywood and put some split foam insulation on the cross bars.

You will find a lot of mixed reports. Some claim Toyota told them ~120 lbs is max but from what I’ve seen there is no printed max in the OM. I’d bet with some quality aftermarket cross bars (and more of them) you could hold a fair bit of weight.

I wouldn’t trust a mat as it will still vibrate and can damage the paint. You are better off buying hard luggage that sits off the roof or some sort of roof rack if you want to secure multiple soft bags. Or as alittleoff said, some plywood would work too.

Are there snowboard racks that work with the oem racks?

I've had bike racks, ski racks, and a large Thule cargo box on the stock roof rack. It's fine. But you're not truly "overland" ready if you don't have a Prinsu with a cute little ladder and some Raptor lights.:stirthepot:

The stock roof racks aren't bad. I like the crossbars on my Outback better, since they fold out of the way, but the 4R crossbars are plenty strong and they're quite securely mounted.

Yes. I haven't found a rack that didn't fit (I've only used three or four).

It's plainly printed ON the cross bars/rack, and it's printed in the manual.
