We are a family with a LONG history of Toyota vehicles. We have 3 kids - (girl/boy/girl - 21,22 and 23) - our youngest wrecked her 05 Tahoe this past December and it was her fault - hence the lengthy time without a vehicle. She is in school (college) and graduating next May, so she needed another vehicle soon.

We found this 2006 Sport Edition V8 4x4 one near Atlanta. We purchased it from an individual - they bought it new in Atlanta, and it had regular maintenance and has just under 85K miles. There were no rust issues and the truck drove very nicely.

I think I paid to much - 16K - but my daughter was needing a vehicle before August and for a southern vehicle and one owner I was willing to bite the bullet. The truck was a needed 4x4 (we own a horse farm), and it also had the V8 (my son has an 02 Tundra V8) and loves the engine.

The previous owners just had the brakes done and the sunroof motor replaced. I have a Timing Belt (water pump, thermostat, pulleys etc) service scheduled next week and we will change the spark plugs and have the oil changed. This car was the previous owners daily driver so the car has been in regular service.

I ran it through a car wash when we got home and noticed the lower plastic panel (drivers side) is loose (towards the front fender opening)...any suggestions? I'll tell the car wash owners, but that never goes well, hopefully it is clips but if not I'll deal with it. The other issue we have is the owners only had one key - I believe it is the valet key. Our dealership said they can take care of getting me 2 keys and 2 fobs but it will be about 400-500 bucks - is there another option?

I'm old...My wife drives a 22 4Runner Pro (lime color) and I have a 23 Tacoma Pro (solar orange), and we've had countless Toyotas over the years, However if there is anything I should know I'd sincerely appreciate the guidance/direction. Thanks.

wow thats a great find honestly and that vehicle will be very dependable and last a long time
    VERY NICE!!
I am pretty sure there are clips, but honestly if you can get that panel off, the 3M double sided tape from the auto body supply place is super legit and will stick those plastic panels back down and hold them there.

A low mileage v8, $16k is probably about right at least based on what i've seen in my area. Looks great!

Talk to a local locksmith about replacement fobs.

It’s silver with a black plastic top. It doesn’t open the glovebox. I think it’s a valet key

A locksmith charged me $250 for a new fob and programming and they came to me.

Based on the year of the vehicle, check YouTube for videos of how to program a new key yourself. I did that for my 2011 Tacoma. Replacement fobs/keys can be found from several sources.

If that is an original key with the black plastic top it is a "master" key, the valet keys have a gray plastic top, unless the key you have isn't an original and was made using the original valet key.

If the key you have was cut from the original valet key it will not lock the glove box...BUT still could be a "master" key if it was programmed as a "master" key.

Did you buy it from the previous owner or from a dealer, if from a dealer I would insist that they supply you with at least 2 keys and one of them if not both being a master key?

In the meantime try going through the initial steps in this video to see if you have a master key, if it gets to the part where you would insert a new key needing programing with no issue then you have a master key, if it doesn't work the first time try it a few more times before you give up because all it takes is one little error in the procedure for it not to work.

For my 4th gen I did this:
    https://youtu.be/q3RRSyGx4Dc

With this 2 pack of key/fob combos:
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B089VSQVXK

Took 2 mins to program each key fob and then program the keys inside of them. The only part that wasn't beyond simple was that I had to take the keys out of the fobs to get them cut (easy) and then get them back in (slight pain but not a big deal).

Well worth it to have 2 brand new keys with fobs, at a total of like $35 including having the keys cut.

How in the world does the original owner lose two sets of keys and fobs?

BTW, congrats on the 4Runner. I had a 2003 v8 4wd and I wish I still had it. I would have paid what you paid for yours. Those are hard to find in good condition and low mileage, especially a southern car.

Thanks - I actually found the local locksmith that does work for my dealership. He is going to get me 2 fobs, 3 keys for 150. He will have it all done this Thursday or Friday, whenever he is available.

I was wrong the key I had had a grey top and it was indeed a valet key.

I was wrong - I'm old and eyesight was the first to go. The key top was grey and it was a Valet key. A local locksmith is going to get me 2 fobs and 3 keys (he does the local Toyota dealership's work). He's charging 150.00

Sweet ride! Yes, there are key/fob options. Dealer will supply and cut chipped key for about $75 using vehicle code so key is essentially brand new OEM. I bought two keys and remote fobs from ebay for $45 and they work great except for the panic button which is too easy to accidentally trigger. I used the new factory key to cut ebay keys. The big savings comes from programming yourself. Ebay keys took the programming same as OEM.

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/233311820950

On a side note, I have my original non-valet key so getting the car to program another key was not a problem. I don't know if a new key can be programmed with just the valet.
