Hello everyone. Fist post here. I drive a 2013 FJ Cruiser TT and my wife is looking at a new T4R for her daily driver.

She wants the off road capability that my FJ has with crawl control, but she needs a third row seat for occasional transport of our daughter's friends. I know crawl control is only available in the Pro and Off Road Premium. If she were to go for the Limited, for the third row seats, how does it's full time 4WD with center Torsen compare to the Pro or Off Road Premium's 4WD with rear locker? Does the Limited have ATRAC?

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

All of the 4Rs are beastly off road

The TRDORP has better clearance, the rear locker, and the CRAWL feature
The LE has the Torsen center diff, which makes it the only AWD 4R, and it has the 3rd row plus some other creature comforts

If all she wants is off road capability, stick some different wheels/tires on the LE and you're set. If your wife is crawling Black Bear Pass with your daughter's friends, you might need some additional mods.

The Limited has the ability to lock the center dif, so it is similar to the SR5 in that regard. It does have ATRAC as well, but no crawl control and no locking center rear dif.

Also, it doesn't have a gas tank skid. If you plan on doing much off-road you may want to consider investing in one of those.

I'm not sure what you intended to write, but it's incorrect the way you wrote this. I'll let someone who understands this better respond on the various differentials on the various 4R models, but if we're talking front, rear, and center, the key distinctions are:

Rear locking differential : on the OR and Pro models
Center locking differential: on the Limited model

How much off-road capability does she want? If she wants an off-road beast, she should get a trd off road or trd pro due to its rear locker, crawl control and better ground clearance.

The Limited is the best trim for unpredictable weathers due to its full-time 4WD system(similar to AWD). So if there are any snow or ice on the roads, she can just keep driving without touching anything unlike in a TRD/SR5 where you will have to shift the knob to 4Hi and shift it back to 2Hi when roads are clear. But when it comes to off-road, the limited has its limitations and it will require some modifications in order to be more off roadworthy. Things like 20" wheels and tires, side skirts and running boards and gas tank skid plate. You might also want to replace the Xreas suspension with a more off-road-oriented suspension kit since the Xreas is specifically designed for pavement drivings.

Unless you're rock crawling or driving in deep sand, crawl control shouldn't be high on the priority list. And even then, these trucks are very capable without crawl control in those same situations.

Might wanna read up on it or watch some videos to see what it's actually for. If my memory serves, its only accessible in 4L, which is not frequently used unless you're getting yourself into sticky situations intentionally (for fun).

You'll never have reason to use crawl control in "daily driver" situations.

If it hasn't been mentioned already, the center locker isn't like a front or rear locker. This option is typically only found on vehicles with full time 4WD. In normal modes, the power is usually 30% front / 70% rear. When the center locker is engaged, this switches to 50% front / 50% rear and acts just like a standard 4WD system.

With regards to the OP's question, crawl control really isn't used that much. Getting more clearance on the Limited can easily be achieved by changing out shocks and installing 32-33" tires. The only two issues I can see with offroading the Limited vs an SR5 or TRD OR, is the front approach angles. The Limited may scrape the front bumper more.

Beyond that, the only option that would be nice is a locking rear differential. This is something else that can be added if it's really needed.

In summary, if the more premium features and third row seating is more important and useful than the off road features found on the TRD Pro or TRD OR, than I say get the Limited. It's still a 4Runner and very capable in it's own right.

 Im still new to this forum. Should have looked at the posting date. Info is still relevant though to anyone considering a Limited over a TRD OR / PRO.
