I really want a new 4runner but the MPG

To me personally that's lot of gas money. I enjoy 4Runners because both me and wife don't drive much. My wife's daily commute is about 2miles 1 way.
We absolutely enjoy driving the 4Runner on weekends even on pavement.

My dad used to own a 1987 Corolla and after 37 years of service it still runs great. I made him sell it because he is getting old. But it was sold to a relative so its still in the family where he can seen it and drive it when he wants to bring back old memories. I would never trust the new Corrolla with CVT to last that long nor the GR Corolla with 1.6Turbo.

If I have a daily drive I would consider something like a Rav4 Hybrid / Venza with the 2.5 hybrid n/a engine. The saving of gas money should help me to replace the hybrid battery when needed and still you have the gas motor if battery goes bad.

If you need to commute that much, and you have commented that it has relatively low power and bad MPG, and you think it’s old…you will just hate the 4runner more and more each day. Get something else.

The only exception would be if you love the idea of a 4runner for lots of other reasons, and you use it for more than just commuting.

If you are even thinking about gas, I don't think you need a second one. I would also echo that having 2 SUVs/CUVs doesn't make as much sense to me, but that is up to you if that is actually useful. I would say having one wife mobile and one decked out one would be nice

Do you want to take the Runner or the Runner?

I drove a RAV4 Hybrid around town and it was fine. Comfy and decent room plus the electric probably made it more spirited than it would have been gas alone. Definately like my Runner better even though it's a pig.

Sometimes I think about giving up the capability and savings a small hatchback would bring but I have my SO’s Honda to scratch that itch and compensate so we have my 4Runner for adventure and edge cases and her HR-V as a nice runabout. I’d say complementing rather than duplicating is the smart way to go in this case.

If you already have a 4Runner and a Tundra then why get another 4Runner? A small comfortable commuter makes a lot more sense.

My dad has a new corolla, with a K&N air filter he is getting 40-42mpg. He doesnt drive like a rally car driver, he is fishing for best MPG but he gets it easily.
When he drives my moms Rav4 he can get 36 out of it
When my mom drives the Rav4 she gets about 30

Let's ask another fun question: OP why are you commuting 2.5 hours per day? You know that's killing you slowly, and you're basically taking a 25% hourly rate deduct just from those unpaid hours in the car (unless of course you're talking about driving while on the clock).

Is your living or work situation so rigid that you need this commute?

Obviously changing this is easier said than done, but most people are much happier with a shorter commute time.

I drive a 4Runner and the wife, a Rav4. We love both vehicles. Totally agree about the poor mileage of the 4R. How about a Highlander? Better mileage than a 4R, better on road manners.

It’s part of living in a remote place, I have no neighbors just rolling hills.

the worst part of my job is the drive even then I use all back roads no interstate.

My Ex and I leased a 2016 Highlander followed by a 2019 4RUNNER. The Highlander got s few MPG better fuel economy and a nicer ride, but the brakes were inadequate and front pads went to metal in less tha 40,000 miles. We usually get 60,000 miles or more from a set of brake pads.

Correction - happier on the outset.

how long will that 4R novelty last? Keeping paying for gas while driving body on frame as a commuter? Bumper to bumper traffic? Shheeeiit

Remember because of the poor gas mileage, the resale value has plummeted, so pm me for the top offer.

I’m getting a good chunk of change for my totaled out due to hail 15 Tacoma 4.0L. 137K top tier 87 I get 20-21 mpgs. Hopefully next week I’ll have a 24 4 runner. I drive 25 miles each way 4 times a week for work. If I can get the same mpgs out of the 4 runner I’m happy. I don’t drive like a dick either.

There are few compelling reasons to get a 4runner if you are commuting 3 hours a day.
It is expensive to run, poor road manners, poor NVH levels, dated engine, sluggish gearbox, seat comfort is average at best, the list goes on.
We recently started doing longer work related commutes 3 times a week and cover around 200 miles round trip. Mostly highway driving with some short rural roads. It's not fun. Also, mpg is severy affected by your speed. At 65mph, you are looking at 21.5+mpg. But the minute you doing 75-80mph, it drops down to 19+mpg. Beyond 80 you looking at 18mpg.Aroukd city 17 in stop go traffic.
Something more car like with a unibody construction is better for extended commuting. Highlander, RAV4, CRV, all come to mind. CRV is phenomenal.

Considering I paid 27 for it 8 years
Considering I paid 27,000 for it in 16 with 30K miles. I’m getting 21K with an oxidized roof and 137K on the clock. Mint condition I couldn’t get 20K.
