Factory Rock Sliders

I just purchased this 2024 which has a lift and I assume factory rock sliders. Has anyone used this sliders with good success or are they something that needs to be upgraded before doing any serious rock climbing?

Do they bolt to the frame or the body?

Toyota makes two different versions.
The one that bolts to the frame is pretty solid for a factory option.
The one that bolts to the body is arguably just cosmetic and offers almost no protection.

Both of which are outperformed by aftermarket sliders. But unless you're serious about wheeling the frame mounted Toyota sliders are pretty good.

 

Well.......I guess I'll have to go crawl up under the 4runner to see. Thanks for the helpful information. I would guess they are the cheapest they can get away with.

I don’t believe the OEM rails are made out of HREW or DOM

 

Probably not too serious. Just planning on some Overlanding trips with friends. I'm not into tearing up stuff.

 

Just curious - I've heard of dealership installed lift kits, so what exactly is the "factory lift kit"?

 

I know most Off Road Premiums sold here in Texas come with the bolt to body option. That looks like what you have, although it's difficult to tell from the photo.

I upgraded to RSG. But there are a ton of options out there! Everyone's got a different opinion on who makes the best ones

 

The "factory" sliders bolt to the frame. Those in the pic appear to be the factory "rock sliders", and they are legit.

 

Does Toyota call them "Rock rails" "Trail Rails" or just Rock Sliders?

Because they sell a couple different options and I cant figure out which ones are actually bolt to frame.
My "Rock rails" were bolted to the body and offered no protection... Maybe they used the wrong name on the dealer spec sheet though. I've never been able to figure it out.

Looks like my dealer had it wrong on the spec sheet. They typed "Rock rails" but I most certainly got the cheapo "Trail rails"
The Rock Rails are solid but I have never seen a 4Runner at a Texas dealer with actual "Rock rails" ...or KDSS for that matter.

I think they are a port-installed option (PIO), not that it matters. That being said, I've never seen them on a 4Runner on a dealer lot. The "Predator" steps are on a bunch of them, but I've always affectionately referred to those as "rock catchers"; all but worthless off road. The rock rails on the other hand are solid.

Toyota Parts had a Memorial Day sale, with free shipping, so they were $485 to my door and a very easy 30 minute install.

 

I crawled up under there....these are most definitely body mounted and more for cosmetic effect. Just another thing to add to the trip "down the rabbit hole".

 

Yep, those are the factory frame mounted rock rails. Pretty decent option for factory. Unless you are really playing in the rocks hard (if so why get a 4R) they should be good. I have them and I'm really happy. Protects the rocker panels without sticking our or down too far. I also don't need or want a step so I didn't want something that needed to be stepped over when entering or exiting the rig. I say wheel it. You will find out if they meet your needs or not.

One option is to upgrade to the Toyota Rock Rails.

They offer good protection and are almost half the price of aftermarket sliders. They may work great for your use case.
They don't offer as much protection as most aftermarket options. And they're too narrow to use as a step. But if those aren't big issues for you they're a great option for the price!

Yes. I just installed them on Saturday.

 

I got a set on the holidays sales for $200 per side, shipped. Installed easily with provided hardware. I would agree that these are sturdy rocker protection from loose rocks and debris not but obviously not for full vehicle weight bashing or continuous abuse. These bolt right up, have a nice black crinkle finish, turn up close to the rocker, only stick out a couple inches beyond the rocker with the door open.

Purchased online (arrived next day to dealer) and installed mine this past weekend. Great deal with the Memorial Day savings. Unless you will be doing some serious rock crawling these factory rails will be plenty for overlanding. I had the same rails on my stock FJ TT, did John Bull which is a black diamond trail here in SoCal, never had an issue. I doubt this truck will get the same use as my FJ!

 

I installed the factory rock rails on my SR5. I like that Toyota engineers designed them with accident crush in mind. I do not bump them with my legs getting in or out. My daughter has factory running boards on her SR5 and her 2 year old climbs into rear seat using them. I am looking into removable steps for the rock rails when needed.

 

Love this truck. What type/size of wheels do you have on this? Did you have to lift the truck at all?

I am still seeking removable steps designed to fit the 4runner rock rail. I have access to steel fabrication but my preference is ready made or requiring slight modification. I saw a step fitting a jeep rock rail that seemed to have potential.
But I have a couple upgrades needing my time first: my GMRS removable transceiver and my removable under hood air compressor. Both will connect to an additional power supply system under hood.

 

Where did you get these rock sliders? (or whatever you want to call them).

 

Toyota. They are a factory item.
