Definitely body off in the Tundra's case, probably the Sequoias and later on the GX too. The engine will be lucky to stay under 15k when it's all said and done once all the tertiary parts are included.

Granted the previous DOHC v8s were pretty snugly placed in the engine bays, but they were not known to fail too often so it's less of an issue.

It's rare to hear about diesel cars being recalled. I think Toyota should slap a diesel in the 4Runner, Tacoma, Land Cruise, Tundra and Sequoia. Fuck those turbo's and hybrids. I want LEADED!

You forget how much trouble VW got in for their diesel emission compliance issues? And mercedes? And Cummins? And the notorious Navistar 6.0 and 6.4 that were total garbage as fresh designs to reduce emissions? How about the ongoing CP4 fuel pump grenading fiasco with certain year Rams and GMs, as well as current production Ford Scorpion engines?

Only GM is left with a half ton diesel, everyone else vacated the half ton and under US market as well as passenger cars, SUVs and crossovers .

Probably just manufacturers all being lazy, I'm sure.

In fairness, the 5.7 wasn’t perfect either. I had the 5.7 in my 2017 Tundra and I never had an issue personally. Many others dealt with the cam shaft tower seal leaking, and that was a bear to fix. Dealers wanted around $4000 to fix it, although Toyota did “good will” quite a few repairs on trucks well out of warranty. The problem wasn’t isolated to the Tundras, the Land Cruiser (even those made in Japan) and Sequoias had the same issue. For those with the 3.4TT set up, it’s gotta be frustrating to wait and wonder, and a lot of folks buy the tundra to keep long term.

I don’t perceive most of the comments here as trashing Toyota. Rather, most people put up with the compromises that come along with Toyota trucks (generally less capacity and fewer features than the competitors) to buy reliability and durability. If the newer Tundra no longer offers that reliability/durability advantage, it’s going to have to cost less or have more features/capacities than competitors. I’d expect some deep, deep discounts on Tundras come late summer and early fall. It might be a good time to scoop up a deal if the issues are fixed or a 10/150 type Toyota backed power train warranty is included. Seems to me they’ll have to do something to spark sales.

I could have missed it, but does anyone know exactly what the problem is? Debris in the engine, but where, exactly? Scattered throughout the entire engine? I wouldn't think so. I'm guessing it's very localized, such as in cylinder 4 only, or one particular bearing, or what have you, and it's directly related to one specific step in the manufacturing process. Likely a goof or oversight, and not a condemnation of the entire engine design.

Who knows man. We're all just speculating, making accusations and flying off the handle. That's how cancel culture works. Condemn it as evil before having all the facts. That's what we do on this site: Bitch about random shit that probably will never impact us at all.

I’d definitely buy a Toyota Turbo Diesel before I’d buy the 3.4TT. Americans missed the boat on diesel motors in the 80s and 90s unfortunately. I had a couple of TDIs between 2000-2009. The European and global market diesel motors are great. How about letting us buy the real Hilux with a diesel? Or open up the global Land Cruiser options for us? Dreams!

I dunno, who builds the cars? The government regulatory body, or the auto manufacturers? I agree that there are better ways to manage pollution output than the weird set of laws we currently have, but, don't forget, we, the consumers, all like big, fast, heavy SUVs. So, unless you and I are willing to start driving a Jimny, it is what it is.

Nobody really knows other than the anecdotal stories about the forward main bearing failures. Also, I notice the recall doesn't cover 2024, which means they either don't have enough data to include them, or they fixed it in the manufacturing process? Pretty sure the design isn't going to change. Personally, I like the old school main bearing caps rather than the new ladder cover on the 3.4. Then again, I'm not an engineer, I just play one on the internet.

Yeah, I try to maintain my perspective, personally. My perspective: I've been buying nothing but Toyotas since 1982, and the only times I got stranded were my fault. That's approximately 1.5 million miles for me. So when I see something like this recall, it's interesting how many either jump ship or say Toyota has started producing crap. There's often no room for Toyota to make a mistake or to receive flawed parts from a vendor.

They would be a lot more to you and me, but I'm not sure the cost to Toyota would be more, and cab removal won't add much labor, so it'll add a couple hundred dollars, maybe $500.

The EPA is regulating the diesel out of existence. There is so much smog crap on the new ones it is ridiculous. I love my pre DEF diesel but I would never buy a new one that required DEF. I know for awhile GM was buying back trucks they couldn’t figure out how to fix.

Best price I could find for a new 3.4 BARE BLOCK was a little over $5k.

Toyota isn't buying engines, they are building them. Even if they have to "buy" them, as a mechanism to show revenue/expenditures "on the books", their price will be at cost. They aren't paying what you're paying, they are paying what it costs to manufacture them, not for what they sell them to you.

So you believe that between the 5.7L v8 and the 3.4L turbo, Toyota suddenly forgot how to build a reliable engine that is also used for their flagship land cruiser 300/LX?

    LOL.

There is also the storage cost, distribution cost, transport cost, and associated cost of keeping that capacity available that is in addition to the incremental cost to produce another unit.

All manufacturers keep a certain number of whole engines based on statistical data of how many are needed for engines needing warranty repair. This 3.4L turbo is going to redraw that distribution curve for this class of vehicles. After a certain amount of time, that engine is out of production and the production line is retooled for something else, at which point they have to get reman motors which will have a different unit cost.

And it is one less engine for them to have in a brand new truck to make a profit on.

For the displacement / hp ratio that the 3.4TT offers - Fk yeah.. this is brand new territory for them..

And why are they going down in displacement? Are customers asking for higher specific output, or is another outside imperative that is driving it....

It's not like it's a first time ever Turbo engine for Toyota such that they have no idea what they are doing.

What are all these ford fanboys doing here on our 4Runner forum? lol this cracks me up, outrage over something that does not concern most here. I know of like 1 tundra owner here, who loves his truck btw.
A 2023 4Runner owner complaining about tundra engine recall. Sheesh!
    this! Well put.

Most households own more than one vehicle. One can own a 4Runner and a Tundra. I was planning on buying one before this engine fiasco.

Same - gonna wait and see how things pan out. I’ll need another truck in about 3 years so hopefully Toyota will have something worth considering.

I have mostly toyotas but also two fords, one being a 22 F250 with the 7.3. Don't get me started on all the issues Ford has had on a simple pushrod v8 gas motor. You would think that gee, 70+ years of making OHV motors and they still can't get the lifters right, stupid Ford, right? Nope, turns out it has to to with finicky variable pressure fuel pumps that reduces oil pressure to reduce emissions when idling so it...complies with EPA and CARB mandates.

Toyota won't pay the rate "we" pay, they'll pay the warranty rate. They are paying their techs at their dealership.
