Folks are dumping the new Tundras

The 3.4 has serious issues. I guess I am going to delay buying the new GX.

 

Do I have to get rid of it? I rather like mine.

I can't speak to the statistics on the failures of the 3.4 turbo, but around my area in terms of availability, there are about half the number of F150 worth of Tundras, with the cheapest Tundra listed as an SR5 RWD for 50k that has been there for 2 months.

I guess a combination of the price and other factors are keeping buyers away from the Tundra, for the time being. I am 76% confident the 3.4 will be fine in a few years in the GX being a Lexus model, they can't afford to screw it up, I may look at it then, but for the time being I am holding a wait and see position.

 

I'm only at 8k, and I guess the hybrids are excluded from the recall.

 

Anyone who has one they want to dump can dump it in my driveway.

I’m still having a hard time fathoming / accepting the choice of placing a small 3.5L V-6 engine in such a large truck such as the Tundra. Likewise, the same sentiment goes for such a little piss ant 4 cylinder in the new Tacoma and upcoming new 4RUNNER- the turbos not withstanding!

At least give the customer the option of choosing a V-8 for the Tundra, and V-6 options for the Tacoma and 4RUNNER! Cheap, Cheap, CHEAP! Although in reality, these new vehicles are not cheap in price, are they!

I guess I’m just an old fogey and still cling to the theory of there’s no replacement for displacement.

Leave the turbos to the heftier Diesel engines. I really am not a fan of over-working small gas engines with turbos. These turbos will be the death of these small gas engines. But what do I know. But time will tell, won’t it. I’ll be happily keeping my bullet-proof 4.0L NA V-6 in my T4R.

I think those of us with our trusty NA 4.0L V-6s in our dinosaur 4RUNNERS will be getting the last laugh down the road, from a reliability / longevity standpoint that is.

 

I first became aware of this issue when I visited my local dealer's service department with my 2007 4R. There was a Tundra in the first service bay that looked like it had driven over a magic landmine that just blew it apart without damaging anything. Service advisor told me you have to disassemble the truck to replace the engine. Pure genius, right?

More recently, I watched a YT video about a guy whose new Tundra quit on a road trip several hours from his home. Got it towed to a dealer, who kept it for the 70 days it took to replace the engine under warranty. He eventually got a lemon law buyback but they charged him $7000 for "depreciation" - at 16K miles. He said he loved the truck but feared another engine failure, and the $30K+ replacement cost, once it's out of warranty. There's one person who is supposedly on their third engine at 49K miles. I'll keep my 1GR, thanks.

 

After offering v6 turbos in full size pickups after more than a decade Ford is STILL having big problems with cam phasers and other issues with the ecoboost engines.

This is absolutely not Toyota's fault, but rather due to politicians and some unelected agencies like CARB and EPA. The move from NA V8 and V6 to turbo V6 and I4 are ENTIRELY due to regulatory pressure. The very strict emissions standards put in place at the end of 2016 is now not good enough, and new much stricter ones being implemented by 2030 are forcing manufacturers' hand. Even the Camry is ditching its regular I4 engine only set up and moving to hybrid only to satisfy MPG and emissions requirements.

It's the same reason the Hemi 5.7 engines went away, and the Ford's 5.0 us becoming harder and harder to find in vehicles under 60k, and why engines like the 6.4 Hemi and 5.3 GM V8 are having wide spread problems with lifters, the engine makers have to squeeze every last bit of mpg out of them and as a result thinner oil and pressure are causing lubridation problems at idle and low load.

 

@FourBelugas - Yes and no. Government standards are forcing automakers to build accordingly, but Toyota is responsible for the quality of the engines they manufacture.

 

I'd still get one. They look really good IMO but yeah issues should have been solved by now.

 

Oh you are right, it is blatantly obvious that in a dramatic reverse of corporate philosophy, Toyota intentionally did a poor job on designing and producing their new turbo engines used in both Toyotas and Lexus's after 6 decades of having the reputation as THE best I4, I6, v6 and v8 gas engine builder in the industry. Sure. Stupid Toyota. And Ford(hello cam phasers). And Honda(look up the 1.5 problems). And GM. And every other manufacturer struggling with reliability on forced induction, direct injected gas engines.

Just like how every diesel manufacturer has been caught "cheating" to meet emissions standards, it's always the manufacturers' fault and never the unrealistic government mandates. Sure. Stupid everyone but those who make the rules.

Why won't ALL the manufacturers all just take responsibility and meet the standards set by people who clearly are automotive engineers and understand what the practical thermal limits are for mass produced, affordable consumer automobiles? LOL it's so simple. The policy makers who are outlining ICE bans have it all figured out and that's why we have so many sub-30k EVs to choose from that make the ICE vehicles look so unattractive by comparison.

No one said they did anything intentional. By your logic, government agencies mandated airbags, so it's their fault Takata made them in a way that killed people. I agree that the government has monstrously disproportional influence over a lot of things but companies are responsible for the quality of the products they make regardless of what compelled them to do so.

 

Sure, all the companies just hate making reliable engines. toyota just can't help themselves and wanted to ditch their reliability reputation so badly.

Love my F150 with the 5.0. Put a Corsa cat back exhaust on it. No drone but makes me feel really good when I put my foot down.

I think they should be ecoorboost engines. It's either eco, or boost, but not both.

Hm, let's see either:

(1) Toyota suddenly forgot to how to build engines properly, in the exact same time frame as Honda and everyone else who used to be renowned for reliablity.

or

(2) over-restrictive regulatory overhead is causing all manufacturers to make design and production decisions that are impact engine reliability, even Toyotas.

I guess the "rational" thing is obviously to question why would Toyota do this, yes?

Naw you got a great truck, it’s out of my price range. But yes, I do not like the tail lights on the Tundra and Tacoma, and for that matter I don’t think they got the new 4R tail lights right either (Tundra/Taco is too large and too simple and too much red - it just looks like three lazily designed columns. And the 4R seem too small for the truck now. The whole new 4R is f*cked up aesthetically in my opinion in which you did not ask for )
