Find another vehicle with reputation for being “reliable”. Is there a similar concentration of anecdotal reports of new engines blowing up? Nope.

 

How many of us kept buying Tacomas annd other Toyota trucks all the frame rust recalls?
How many people bought Honda v6s through all the transmission failures?

I could dig up other but it won’t matter as your mind is made up and you will throw out some other anecdote as “fact”. Good luck with whatever brand you plan to switch too. I’m sure a Wrangler Rubicon or Bronco Sasquatch could be a ton of fun for a change of pace.

 

You are missing the objective facts. If the vaunted 1grfe similarly has a concentrated but relative small number of reports of failures, then I would say the new turbo v6s are exhibiting sentiments similar to the 1grfe from the field. Then these reports are likely outliers for an otherwise extremely robust engine.

What is an “objective” fact? Are there subjective facts in your opinion?
What is a “sentiment from the field” are you talking about owner opinions?

If you benchmark against one of the single most reliable engines of all time then of course you are likely going to be dissapointed. Kind of like saying “Ruth’s Chris steak house doesn’t have a Michelin star, therefore it must be no better than McDonalds”

Hard act to follow for reliability. Next several months will be interesting. Glad to say I have two of the good ones. Edit: The head gasket issues of the 1GR in the early days were straightened out, and they've been solid ever since. Hopefully Toyota steps up if there is an emerging problem.

It’s a 5 year 60,000 mile warranty. Whichever comes first. I will hit 60K in under three years with how much I drive. I would do a 6 year loan so I would roughly pay off half the vehicle cost in that time frame.

 

Then you are an outlier. Statistically the average American drives 12k/yr. I do about 10k as I have a short 20min backroads commute.

6 year loan? It’s your choice but that’s not a wise financial decision.

 

Speaking of ford. My next door neighbor has 2yr old F250 he bought brand new. Intake manifold cracked at less than 20k miles. Said he is selling it as soon as he gets it back from dealership and never buying another Ford again.

6 year loan is fine as long as the vehicle lasts that long. I like to let the bank front the money and risk for expensive things and keep more of my own money for investing. It seems to be working out well so far.

My brother and a close friend have been driving Ford trucks for years. They seem to be decent, overall, from what I've seen.

As far as the 2.4T VS the 3.4, they're completely different engines. But, a 4 cylinder should be better off, having 5 main bearings for 4 cylinders as opposed to 4 main bearings in a V6.

This year, we financed at 3.99% on our Subaru.. but paid cash on the 4Runner because the 8-9% interest rate didn’t make sense math-wise.

where do you want to place your money? Park it in a HYSA +brokerage account, to make money, or eagerly exchange it for the title to a depreciating asset?

I park it in my 401k, HSA and Roth IRA, mostly in vanguard index funds.

I could have suggested he read one of Jack Bogle, William Bernstein or Burton Malkiels Books on finance but those tend to be far deeper than the average person wants, or cares, to know. And many diehard bogleheads will argue that when it comes to cars if you can’t pay cash you can’t afford it period- I didn’t want to be that harsh. Ramsey (though I personally don’t like him) is a somewhat household name that most non finance nerds will get the meaning.

Whatever your criteria, and no matter how low the rate taking out a long term loan on a depreciating consumer purchase is not recommended by any finance professional. Even if you have the money easily accessible elsewhere taking out a 6 or 7 year loan (which they have only offered relatively recently, kind of like subprime and exotic mortgages) is a guaranteed path to being upside down on the car. And almost always carries a higher rate than a 3-5 year loan as the bank considers you a high risk borrower when you need that long to pay it back.

even at cheaper financing, I would never finance a vehicle. You end up justifying higher trim or expensive vehicle you don't want, by saying it just costs $50 extra per month! Buying a vehicle outright "hurts"more, just as it should be.

Other than my house, I don't buy anything I can not pay cash for.

 

I believe the wife and I did a 7 year loan on new ‘16 4R, ppl know it’s not wise but with next to no savings in our case, could only afford those monthly payments (even though the interest gets you.
We were more simple folk then with a mortgage on 1 room condo and two cats.
..did well for myself and paid out the 4R before 4 years tho.

I predict that they'll keep making 4Rs and people will keep buying them, despite the existence of other options and the non-existence what people would rather they build instead.

Ya no, I mean I’m not one who’s been historically scared of loans. But if a couple has no investments and savings at all at the time, besides mortgage, then the only way of
getting yourself into that 4R is a little cash down and financing with the dealerships private lending company (Tricor?)

you need to have discipline. Just because it’s 0% loan, it doesn’t mean you ignore the purchase price. Only idiots purely make their decisions via the monthly payment amount.

well I am guilty of financing vehicles, but I never hold the note more than 3-4 years tops and I’ve never had a loan with a rate over 4%. And we max out 2 401ks, 2 roths, an HSA and my wife’s pension contributions every year so I don’t worry so much about a little excess leverage….

 

I could probably live just fine with an EcoBoost but it's the oil pump wet belt that I would shy away from. It's not in the 3.3, EB 3.5 but they put one in the current EB 2.7, EB 1.0 and 5.0 off the top of my head. Probably beefed up for truck duty over the infamous 1.0 but a wet belt's a wet belt until proven otherwise IMHO.

Definitely. I can't imagine anything short of a complete swap or rebuild being satisfactory. This is definitely a big problem for Toyota

 

It’s about time. I want to see how they explain the 2024 engines starting to have the same issue. Is it still manufacturing debris being left in the engine three years later????

 

Hopefully this doesn't play out like the Taco frame rust.
