2022 Oil Filter Housing Swap

Hello all, new member here. Yes, I've looked through as many posts as I could (before losing consciousness from reading fine print). I didn't find a conclusive answer so I'll ask it in simple terms here because I'm a simple guy (ha).

Who has changed their plastic oil filter housing on a 2022 T4R and have you had any issues?

I had a 2015 Taco before I got this truck 3 months ago & it's time for my 1st oil change. I have done my own maintenance for over 40 years and never had an issue with the Taco (or my '97 FZJ80). With the undermount filter I've read horror stories about the housing cracking under dealership applied torque.
Since I got this truck with 32K on the clock, I don't know the history of who serviced it except that I do know the dealer in KY, where I got it, did a full service before I picked it up.

15620-31060 & the accompanying plug part# 15643-31050) just in case the plastic housing removal goes south right off the bat.
If anyone is willing to share experiences good or bad with the metal housing and associated swap of the perforated pickup tube, I'd greatly appreciate your advice.

I changed on my 19 without issues except for a lighter wallet. Just buy a good removal tool from Motvix.

 

Does the Motivx tool also fit the metal housing?

 

Yes. I use it now on my metal housing that I didn't need.

 

Thanks for the quick & to the point response. My Motivix tool arrives today and my Fumoto valve arrives tomorrow. I ran a Fumoto on the Taco for 7 years without a hiccup. These RCI plates have plenty of room for the

F-133 valve to fit. I'll update after the oil change this weekend.

 

I had an oil change at a local shop who broke my original plastic filter housing. They replaced it with a metal one supposedly better. I was at Toyota getting the new plastic one installed 2 days later. I did bring it back but it seeped no matter what they did. I personally wouldn’t ever do it but I’m sure you will find success stories.

I'm hoping to keep the current plastic one in good condition but have the metal as a 1st attempt backup plan. The price of the replacement OEM plastic is 5x the price of the metal one so it's rolling the dice. If I get the plastic one off the 1st time without incident, then I'll return the metal one since I'll be doing the maintenance from here on.

It was a little over $300 bucks for the housing and the oil change. Nothing for my aggravation and loss of vehicle for 5 days as of course they didn’t have it in stock and I brought it in late afternoon on a Thursday. It was leaking bad enough that I wouldn’t drive it anyway until it was fixed. I’m sure someone makes a great metal one it just wasn’t the one I got.

 

I’m guessing yours was not OEM Toyota metal filter housing?

 

@Skidpad13 - I'm curious as to why you ordered a replacement filter housing plug vs. swapping the one from the plastic housing, as it is metal, and would work with either filter housing...

After reading many threads on this topic, it seems that the plastic housing is more than adequate provided that it is not abused by a less than caring technician. My 2012 Sequoia with nearly 200k miles has the original plastic housing and all of the oil changes have been performed by our dealership with no problems. But if someone will sleep better with an aluminum housing, I’d say go for it. I would certainly spring for the OEM one and ensure the original filter tube is transferred to the new housing. There has been numerous posts of members having leaks with third party aftermarket aluminum housing.

 

Nah I got an oil change on a Sunday at a shop in PA. They broke the oem while trying to remove it. I’m not sure what brand he used but it was a Sunday in the middle of nowhere and he used what he had.

 

I did it on my 2018 4Runner TRD OR & Just got one for my current 4R TRD Pro. You'll need to swap out the plastic stand pipe W/the one that comes W/New aluminum, Or just check to make sure they're the same height. Yes I bought the metal R&R tool.

 

Ah ok, that makes sense. For what it's worth, I replaced the OEM plastic housing with an OEM metal housing on my last 4Runner. I want to say the metal OEM was labeled as for Corolla when I ordered, but my mind is hazy. It arrived in a Lexus branded box, and after I swapped the inner spring and metal tube piece it went on with no problem.

I never had any leaks, or issues. I think the metal filter housings get a bad rep either due to counterfeits or people buying knock offs. I know you didn't go out of your way to buy a knock off, but a lot of people get the itch to swap parts out to "upgrade". Then they are too cheap to spend a little extra so instead they buy something that's "the same thing, just without the brand name".

 

I'm not Skidpad13 but when I did the swap from plastic to metal housing on my last 4Runner I had to order a replacement filter housing plug cause whoever torqued the one onto the plastic one over did it. It got to the point where the only way I was going to get it off was by putting the plastic housing in a vice and at that point I wouldn't trust the housing to not have gotten deformed.

 

If you were replacing it with a metal one, why did that matter?

 

Swapped for metal 3+ years ago, kept plastic one as a spare. Also, use Motivx tool. No issues!

 

I replaced mine with a metal one after a cheap stamped steel oil filter tool cracked the plastic housing. I think using the MotivX tool would have prevented this...

No dramas since. Just make sure to replace the tube section on the inside as it is a different size. Also, buy the OE Toyota metal housing. I wouldn't trust the cheap knockoff for such a vital piece.

For what it's worth I use the MotivX tool now. It works better on both aluminum and plastic housings.

 

I agree . When you cut corners to save a couple of bucks you usually end up spending twice that in time, money and aggravation. I was in a jam and that’s all he had on hand. I brought it back to give them an opportunity to rectify it but it still seeped. The shop ended up paying the bill from Toyota as well. Shit happens but they were good about it and told me go get it fixed and send me the bill.

 

I'm coming up on a 5k/6month oil change, and bought this tool that I used last time that worked quite well on the plastic filter housing:



Should it work as expected this time around, I seen no need to change to a metal filter housing.

 

In my case, I wanted to leave the plastic housing as a spare in case something did go wrong. At the time I remember for whatever reason the plastic housings were a lot more expensive than I thought they'd be. A new housing plug was relatively cheap.

On top of that I was doing all of this at an awkward time between moves. So I didn't have all of my tools or a garage to work in.

Well when I hit 5k & R&R Oil & Filter I'll now be the great owner of 2,TWO plastic Toyota V6 GR oil filter housings!

 

I changed the housing on mine. There are both generic aftermarket metals and a genuine Toyota metal one that’s listed as a Lexus part. But the Toyota/Lexus part (it’s not that expensive), but make sure to take the center tube OUT and swap in the longer center tube from your original plastic housing.

Everything else is exactly same. Same filter, same o rings, same tools fit.

 

By necessity, or by choice?

 

I haven’t had any issues with the plastic one and am at 105K miles. No one has ever worked on the vehicle but me. I just use a ratchet extension to remove the entire housing in one shot rather than remove the drain cap thing and use the plastic drain tool. At 100K I replaced it with a new OEM plastic one as preventive maintenance and figure it should easily last another 100K.

 

The plastic housing (15650-38020) is OEM on the Lexus GS460, LS460, LS500...

If Toyota thought it was fine for them, it's probably fine for the 4Runner.

 

You are %100 correct it is fine, I choose to go W/metal that's all. Just like they choose to warrant oil changes @10k. Toyota's not going to risk their reputation W/in correct information or products as proven over the years.

 

Nothing wrong with the metal housing. If I had a 4Runner and broke the plastic housing, I'd be tempted to replace it with the metal one myself.
