EMP survivability?

Is a 2nd Gen old enough to possibly survive an EMP attack?

EMP Safe Vehicles

Since the idea behind an EMP attack is to take out delicate electronics, and modern cars and trucks are chock full of electronics, the conventional wisdom says that any car built since the early 1980s is likely to be vulnerable to an EMP. By the same logic, newer vehicles that are even more reliant on electronics are much more likely to be damaged in the event of such an attack.

Modern vehicles do use a number of electronically-controlled systems, from fuel injection to transmission controls and everything in between, so it only seems logical that a powerful EMP would turn any modern vehicle into an expensive paperweight by shutting down the electrical system or permanently damaging it.

According to this logic, older vehicles that don't make use of complex onboard electronics systems should be safe from an EMP attack. However, the small amount of real-world testing that has actually been done doesn't necessarily line up with these very reasonable assumptions.

 

2nd Gen has an ECU, so not likely survivable.

 

Bicycles and horses are certainly immune.

Not without parking it in a giant faraday cage first...

 

You need old vehicle with points and condenser/carburetor.

 

For the price of that cover you could a nice older Jeep CJ or other make vehicle.

Yeah, I'd rather have fuel injection and electronic ignition and take my chances with EMP. I already did my time with carb cleaner and a timing gun.

Yea the other thing is that I read small electronics would be more likely to survive due to less antenna length reducing EMP “reception” and cars are already kind of a Faraday cage and lack those big antennas.

But if we’re in a spot to worry about EMP, probably a good chance we’d have bigger fish to fry.

If not a bicycle and modern vehicles are negatively-affected, one would probably want an old motorcycle since while you’d be zipping around, others won’t necessarily be.

 

My Blazer would keep rolling. Original, down to the points distributor.
