Hello, I’m new here and hoping someone can help! I have a 2020 4runner that I have had for 11 months. Today after starting it I heard a noise coming from the rear driver side. It sounds like an air leaking/rattling sound. It is only in this area and only while the vehicle is started. When the vehicle is off you can no longer hear it. Has anyone had this experience?
This is what it sounds like:

Following this. I noticed the exact same noise the other day and I also have a 2020.

I’ve had that noise for quite some time on mine. I’ve thought about it being the fuel pump but haven’t had any performance issues or recalls, yet. I’m betting it’s the fuel pump though. Almost sounds like air going through the lines.

Dang! That is on the weird side of things - if anyone figures this out please post what it is and whether or not you were able to fix it.

Thanks for the replies! Hoping someone will have some info soon. I will be taking it to the dealer next month for a service but I am nervous to trust them on this issue. The vehicle only has 5800 miles so I haven’t traveled much but have noticed some struggles on uphill roads at about 65+ mph. But I am not sure how much power they are supposed to have uphill at high speeds at 7000 elevation.

Mine does just fine going up steep grades. It’s lifted on bigger tires so I have to put my foot down a bit but it’ll maintain 65mph at around 3k rpms no problem.

Is it possible that the heat shield is vibrating on the muffler?

or the heat shield rattling on itself?

If it’s under warranty, give the dealer the first shot. Otherwise, it’s getting under there and poking around till you find the culprit. Sounds to me like something vibrating, or rock stuck in some part kf the frame, maybe something with the spare?

pinging this to see if ya found anything out. I have the same noise from time to time (I'm at 95k miles). Took it in to the dealer today for service and mentioned the noise, we'll see if they have any input (and how much they try to charge me).

Was there ever an answer for this? Just noticed mine making the same noise yesterday for the first time. It went away as soon as I turned off the car.

Gas cap or evap hose sucking air from somewhere. It's not moving so how is doing that?

I did fill up Saturday which is when I first think I noticed the noise. Ill double check the gas cap.

I have no CEL and my gas MPG is better than ever.

I saw same thing on Facebook club. You could always let dealer diagnose and you fix yourself if possible. You could use a stethoscope to pinpoint it. Just start touching and listening. Sounds like a distraught sucking more than rattle. Can't rattle sitting still. I don't think

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
Does it make the noise with the key on but not started?

No noise when not started but ACC on. Gas cap is tight and no noise coming from that area. Definitely coming from behind the rear driver side wheel well liner.

Did you try with the dash showing start?…..not acc.
Push start button twice with your foot off the brake.

    Yup did that too.

Appointment at the dealer Friday morning if it's still making the sound.

    Update:

Dealer called and said they couldn't hear anything and come pick up my 4R. Cost $160 for diagnostic fee. Payed went to car, turned it on and can clearly hear the noise. Get my service advisor and he comes out now he hears it and denied he heard it before. No clue what it is and calls the tech out who worked on it. Tech listens and says it the fuel pump and that he didn't hear it before and that it's completely "normal".

Apparently according to them some 4R have noisy fuel pumps but doesn't mean it's going bad.

Why did they charge that much to do nothing if they initially didn't hear anything? You should charge them $160 for pointing it out to them

I agree. They stated "diagnostic fee just to look at it.".

I'm honestly annoyed and will probably make sure I note it on the customer feedback email I'll get.

I thought they only did this kind of crap to warranty claims. Apparently, it’s more profitable to charge customers 160 bucks and tell them to go away, than it is to quote and complete a job. It makes sense. Literally they made 160 bucks having to do zero work.

This isn’t honest if you ask me. In 30 years of driving and owning cars I’ve never heard a fuel pump make that much noise. To say it’s normal is basically showing they don’t want the job.

I’m guessing it’s a way to turn customers away when the shop is busy. Except they managed to figure out how to charge customers for telling them to go away.

I’ve had similar shitty dealer experiences. There’s literally zero reason to take it to a dealer for just about any repair work needs. It’s much better to spend some time asking around for a good independent shop than it is to waste a day taking it to a dealer.

I'm still under my CPO warranty which is why I brought it in. I was told no charge for anything if it's a warranty issue.

Some points to consider while your fuel pump is “normally” operating.

Since you were the one to replicate the problem after you payed, did they re-open the ticket and document that fuel pump clattering noises are normal? You’ll need that in there for when it fails. They might apply the 160 bucks to the job that they bill towards warranty…if you remind them that’s diagnostic fees are usually put on the total repair job.

Does the fuel pump recall apply to your model year? Might be worth checking. At this point, no reason to be sure they checked.

Also, does the CPO warranty cover the fuel pump? There’s usually a lot of fine print there.

There is no recall on mine. I checked and they told me and documented they checked on the service write up. Good idea ab documenting it, I'll call Monday and ask them to add it.
