Ran low on fuel and throwing P0430 code now. My tech said cat but I have never replaced one on my 4runners. Has anyone replaced catalytic converter and it solve the problem? It's not consistent about about the times it does.

You sure it’s not just the 02 sensor?

    Oooh look, another mod.....
@morfdq is right, it's probably just the sensor. Here's a thread from another user explaining it: https://www.4runners.com/threads/2006-with-code-p0430.24235/

Well that's what I was guessing at only catalytic converter I ever saw replaced were the stolen ones. I thought I might have cleaned throttle body to soon. It would throw a MAF sensor code occasionally. I have cleaned and changed out with another but no difference. I was going to start with down stream sensor first. Scan tool says a bad injector, MAF air leak, cat could cause. I think I will try a dry air filter again. The cheap parts throw. The injectors and O2 sensors are expensive. I thought maybe the 3rd world Venezuelan gas I bought out of necessity after driving with gas light on burnt a sensor. It must have thrown code 25 times the next 2 days then no rhyme or reason when or why. I been driving with a Bluetooth scan tool plug-in and clearing with my phone as I drive. That's been the cheapest thing before throwing parts. That's a loosing solution on Toyota. I replaced gas cap the first time it ever started a code and that worked for a while if it ever was the problem.

I consistently got po420 and po430 codes in my 07 FJ after scanning and resetting the code. Truck only had about 99k on it at the time. Replacing the cats fixed it. However, it drove fine and got ok mileage with the light on. My drivers side had a chunk come loose inside which also made an annoying rattle. Unfortunately, I lived in the PHX area at the time and it wouldn't pass emissions, so I had to fix it. My opinion it's most likely not the 02 sensor. Good luck and post up your year and mileage and what you're doing to fix it.

Thanks. I guess they just aren't what they used be since times are a changing. My 2001 ran with open headers and no cat without throwing a code. Time for me to let the past go.

Did you just clean your MAF? Did you double check all the hose connections were good? Did it throw the code after the MAF cleaning?

Yes I have cleaned and changed out to trouble shoot. It doesn't throw MAF very often. I drove 175 miles one day and P0430 didn't come until I started wondering why it hadn't. I drove 4 miles yesterday and it threw P0430 4 times. It's crazy.

Yes, Have replaced a catalytic converter to correct that code. The switching rate between the front and rear O2 sensor was too fast indicating reduced converter operating efficiency compared to the other bank functional bank.

I wonder if you can replace with a piece of pipe instead? That seems most efficient of all. If there's no converter then it can't detect inefficiency. Right?

You could do that if you want, Code will still remain however.
