    Aloha,
My 2006 4Runner has trim on the outside on bottom of the doors. It is dirty and crackled. Would like to remove it. Can thus be done with heat without affecting paint?

I’m sure he means the clear film along the door bottoms. Bad news - it’s a bitch to remove. Tried heat, Goo Gone, you name it. Maybe someone has had better luck and will chime in.

Go to an automotive paint shop, like a shop that sells car paint, bondo, ect. They will have what is called an eraser, it goes on a drill or die grinder. This will "erase" the film by rubbing it off. On a new vehicle, you can take pin stripes and stickers off pretty much as fast as you can push the wheel, but on this vehicle with its age, that stuff has baked itself on the paint and is cracking and shrinking which is also shrinking the paint below it. You MUST go slow, otherwise you will burn the paint. Go slow, start at the top and work your way down, it will literally erase it off, dont spin the eraser fast or it will get hot and burn the paint, turn it slow, and it slowly erases the sticky goo and gunk off the door.
The eraser looks just like this

Can confirm this works miracles. I used one of these ‘erasers’ when I removed my badging on my Tacoma and there was sticky stuff underneath that goo gone wouldn’t remove. Like Airdam mentioned, just don’t spin it too fast on the drill and don’t use too much pressure and it’ll take the adhesive off. You’ll get a bunch of specks of adhesive as well as the eraser dust so I stopped and blew the panel clean every so often.

THANK YOU to all who responded to my post! We had a professional detailer who used a liquid adhesive removal product ($150 a can) and hand scraped with a razor tool to remove it. It took him a couple days to get the job done, had to pause when he felt paint softening. Very happy!
