2024 gas mileage

Purchased new 2024 Ltd in late December. Have 2600 miles now. Replaced 2016 Ltd that got 20+ mpg highway. Gas mileage on 2024 for first 2200 miles 18.8 hwy. Just did 400 mile day trip and finally got 20 mpg. Anybody else start out with disappointing mpg to have it get better. The 20 mpg day trip didn't have any 80+ mph interstate speeds and had 100 miles at 70 mph. Better mileage was just result of slower speeds. I drive same routs all the time and 2016 got better mileage blowing down interstate . Anybody see better mpg as it breaks in.

 

Dude, these things get crappy gas mileage. Fill up and drive, don't think about it. Think about the smiles you are getting from this loud diesel sounding motor. If you bought this and not a 40 mpg Toyota crossover, you wanted this, you are flaunting the "4.0L" in your profile

 

Pretty sure a slight improvement after break-in is expected, come back in 10k miles+

 

Just did a drive from Daytona to Jacksonville, mostly at 78mph, averaged 19mpg. Honestly Im surprised it did that well at that speed. Keeping it under 75 makes a big difference, so much so that I typically ride @ 72mph to/from work for that reason. Expect in the 19s/20s avg in stock form with highway tires.

 

I understand they get poor gas mileage. My 3rd 4runner. Just wanted as good of mileage as 2016 4.0l.

 

Congrats on your new 4Runner. Don't forget to do an early first oil change for your break-in.

1. Gas mileage will marginally improve after break-in.
2. Gas mileage will marginally improve with summer gas, with switched to on April 15.
3. Gas mileage will improve if you can find ethanol-free gas (but it might not be cost effective, depending on how much it costs).
4. Highway gas mileage improves with slightly over-inflating tires, add 2-3 PSI each before a long trip.
5. Keep windows up and speed down.
6. Use cruise control as much as possible.

 

20 mpg is good for 4Runner.. The best I ever had on bare stock SR5 was 23mpg, but I was driving for few hours in NY state where everybody seems to be doing exatcly 50mph and I didn't risk going any faster than locals. Nowadays I run 18-19 mpg, but now I have I KDSS, have offroad tires, crossbars and carry some gear in the trunk.

 

Why would anyone measure MPG on their 4runner is beyond me.

 

I think I get about 16mpg on the highway at around 78mph on stock size AT's. Luckily idgaf.

 

Brick-shaped vehicles with heavy frames just aren't going to win many efficiency contests.

And always remember, there are Prius drivers out there who aren't happy with their stock mpg either.

 

I think it's pretty normal for the fuel economy to improve after a few thousand miles. As mentioned above, see how it is after 10K.

 

Why anyone would not track their fuel economy on any vehicle is beyond me. Whether it's good or bad, I always want to know.

 

mpg is calculated by 4Runner, you don't have to measure it : )

Yes, but from my experience actual mileage (hand calculated vs. computer) will vary by as much as 10%.

 

I get zero smiles from the 4.0, all it does is make me cringe.

IMO the OP is asking a legit question. One would think a new vehicle would get at least the same mileage as an 8 year old example of the same vehicle.

 

Honestly, if gas mileage is of importance. 4R shouldn't even be option.

 

I think this has gotten better. Although, I still prefer to do my own calculation. My 2019 has been pretty close whenever I've compared it. OTOH the dash calculation on my 2003 was usually high.

 

Correct! I bought a 4R because it could comfortably handle 10 day road trip covering 2000 miles but daily get out in the back country in terrain requiring a low range transfer case and a locking rear diff. Works exactly as intended!

Fair enough. I was being facetious for effect, and I do track MPG for my own vehicle too -- I just have a very realistic expectation of what it would be. I typically stop doing it after a year or so (right about now) when the engine is broken in and the MPG is settled. My point is that for such a large engine, with body that stands up like it does, we have far too many people worried about MPG.

 

I kinda don't believe my vehicle, and when I do want to know my MPG, its by the old fashioned way.

 

Im assuming being full time 4wd brings the mpg down a tick compared to part time?

 

I agree that nobody should expect good mileage.

But, most of the threads about fuel economy, including this one, are just questions. And then they get clogged up with the usual "buy a Prius" or "nobody who cares about fuel economy should even own a 4Runner" or whatever version of those, which is total BS.

 

OP's previous 4Runner was a Limited, also.

 

Agreed. Somewhat akin to threads where, after an accident, a 4R owner is asking if it looks like it might be totaled, and someone inevitably chimes in with "that'll buff out".

 

Curious as to whether all things are equal between the 2016 & 2024, as in tire size, suspension, etc. It should improve with break in, but no guarantees.
