I downloaded the Toyota app and it wanted me to enroll in all these plans, which I declined including Connected Services, which apparently means most of the functions on the display now no longer work. I am adamantly opposed to Toyota sharing my driving habits with my insurance company, or anyone else. My problem is, and I don't know if it is connected to the not enrolling or something else, is that my hands free phone volume is so low I can't really hear anything while driving. I can barely hear when stopped and the volume knob turned to Max. Is there a way to make the phone volume through the speaker louder? Thanks

Are you connected via bluetooth or cable?

I haven't tested that because I typically run cable so I can have apple car play on. But if I make sure my phone volume is up prior to connecting it seems to work better for me all around. Like my wife has her phone volume on a lower setting and I notice she cranks up the stereo way louder than I do ... maybe she's just cooler haha

I'd try via cord with your phone volume up prior to connecting once and see if it helps at all

    Oooh look, another mod.....
I could be wrong, but I was able to fix my bluetooth/speaker/mic quality issue this way:

It has nothing to do with connected services at all. It's because the stock unit (non JBL) is complete shit. There is no amplifier on it. I upgraded my stock speakers a few months ago, and added an amp. After I did that; people could EASILY hear me and I could hear them.

Prior to that, I would turn my radio knob all the way up and they would tell me (I heard it many times from many people) "Are you driving with your windows down? I can BARELY hear you!" I could also barely hear them.

Slapping an amp seemed to resolve that issue. Now they tell me "Wow, the sound is so much better. I can hear you fine." Now, others on this site have told me that my amp had nothing to do with the improvement because the amp is between the head unit and the speakers, but it did amplify the built in microphone.

I thought maybe there was a bluetooth volume control setting buried deep down the settings page

Limited's have the JBL system. The JBL has a built in amp. She has a 14 speaker system and a subwoofer (I think?). It's the premium system. The Limited and Pro's get it. All others.....get shit.

Did you turn the volume up on your phone? If you already did try that. Use another phone to see if it's your head unit or you phone.

Yes exactly. Below the stereo in mine (and I believe all, but I'm not 100% on that) there is the one that is not just for charging but also does the usb stuff. Plug in to that and test that too

I was just reading my owner's manual after seeing the sticker on the overhead console warning that Toyota will collect trip data including driving habits and may share these.

you have the 'choice' to opt of these
    https://www.toyota.com/privacyvts/

you mentioned after declining to allow them to spy on you and sell your data,
'most of the functions on the display now no longer work'

what do they turn off if you decline connected services? cause I don't want them tracking me either

    ^^ This

My partner is guilty of this in the Tacoma. Phone volume on low and head unit volume at 46... Once I advised him of turning the phone volume all the way up, and controlling the volume on the head unit instead of the phone, it is like a whole new world opened up. Lol.

    Cheers,

    Sean

I really haven't paid much attention to it to tell you the truth. Apple Car Play works if you connect the phone. For the most part the only thing I really use is XM Radio since I get a free 3 month subscription. When that expires I probably won't even turn the radio on. It irks me that they collect my data and sell it to the insurance companies. And that's why I don't do social media. If they want to collect and sell my data they better be paying me.
