    I have a 2020 4runner TRD Pro.

I've heard this random clunking noise back in February and it was pretty cold I heard it almost every day when I would back out of my garage as I have to cut the wheel slowly to the right to back out of my driveway. It was pretty snowy for those two weeks and I was in and out of 4 wheel drive but I when I did check things down there I didn't see anything odd. Then it warmed up and bunch, snow melted and I didn't seem to have the issues any longer.

I still went to toyota and had them check the front end and everything came back good and they had no idea what the issue was since I couldn't replicate it. It then happened again during a rainy day in March and it was blustery cold out and it did it when I was backing out of the garage and when I was pulling into a parking spot and wheel was cut to the right as I pulled in and made the noise right before I stopped.

Then nothing until yesterday it was about 55 and windy, it did it out of the garage and when I got down to shop to have them check it out and it did it when I right-turned into the parking space. Same scenario wheel cut to the right. I could not reproduce it for them but they put it back up on the lift and tested things and didn't see any issues.

Today I mounted the gopro to record it and of course it didn't do it today at all. Any idea what I may be dealing with or do I just see If I can catch the noise on camera to find out what it is doing? Any help would be appreciated.

Was there any work done on it before it started to make the noise?

Sometimes people get lower control arm clunking after installing a lift because they improperly torqued the LCA bolts.

It could be bushings if it happens in the cold and you’re getting you clunking on choppy roads. I’ve had old hondas and mazdas that would clunk all day long over every little crack in the road, but only in very low temps. I think maybe it had to do with steering rack bushings, but I never did anything about it.

No bumps at all. Yesterday I just backed it out of my garage with the wheel turned and it did it and pulled into a parking spot flat ground. Toyota did replace the rack as it started leaking a few years ago and that is the first thing I had them check and they said the rack was fine but they also could not reproduce my issue. Other than the rack I have no other modifications with anything on the front end.

If it was during slow speed steering I’m guessing something was not tightened to proper torque (whether the rack or the suspension), or possibly bad ball joints in the upper or lower control arms.
