Like partially open is not a thing, or is it?

@Yotaholic, you mean like partially pregnant? I think open is open, but if it's not open/closed, educate me.

@hossler1788 I specifically wanted KDSS for off road, but it seems to be good for on road too. One thing I don't understand though is I see people post that if you really want to max your suspension mods you need to ditch KDSS. I'm not sure why, which isn't to mean that's not true. I just don't know why.

Just saw a video by mudpuppy on “how kdss actually works”. Seems like it did not get stiff above 12mph without other inputs. Don’t know how accurate his test is tho. Have anyone seen that video?

Because once you add real suspension upgrades. Kdss just gets in your way. 2.5" kings/fox or similar. I ditched the rear sway bar a while back.

Don't get me wrong kdss is awesome with oem shocks. But once you upgrade from that what does it really do

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
I believe it is essentially a variable sway bar(s).

    Agreed

Not when you have a direct comparison.
Go take a sharp corner at 60 mph with kdss
Do the same thing without kdss. You’ll feel A LOT more body roll

Yes as the truck thinks you’re on pavement when going faster than rock crawling. KDSS “deletes” the sway bars at low speed and makes the sway bars extra stiff when going faster (see video below)
Steering has nothing to do with activating kdss. Speed is what enables/disables it. When you steer and feel resistance it’s because kdss is active and you’re going above 12 mph. If you steer while rock crawling, kdss is not going to become stiff suddenly. That would defeat the purpose.

I've got a weird question here. I've been looking for a cheap TJ for a while now. When I get one, do you think the 4Runner can pull a 4,600 lbs TJ to places?
My future GX absolutely can, without a sweat

Probably, but keep your kdss for towing. That's a benefit of kdss imo. Tjs are very light. You'll tow better with little tires

From my understanding, kdss can “get in the way” you lift too high. From what I recall, it can tolerate a lift of about 2 inches without any issues, or with minimal parts to get it to work without issue. Perhaps someone with lift and kdss has better details.

I’ve seen that video. I was wondering if there was more than just vehicle speed to make it stiff.

What I meant for ride feel is subjective is let’s say I think bilstein rides good and go to stiff, while another person will think it’s to stiff. But I get what you’re saying for comparison.

Kdss works great. Until you start to add suspension travel. Even the trd pro the dont offer it, maybe because the trd pro has more travel then the trdor with its oem shocks

What you are describing is pneumatics
A gas can be compressed, a liquid can not be compressed that is the principle of hydraulics.

Non the less it does give a visual of the theory.

Not saying anyone is wrong, because I don't know, but how does KDSS work relative to suspension? How does spring height impact the system? I don't see the connection? Works well to 1.5" or maybe 2", but how/why? How/why would the system operate relative to spring height? I understand the lean, but that's solved with a spacer (essentially an even taller spring height).

I heard to stay under 3”. I got the eibach stage 2r. For the premium lifts they do make it kdss specific. Not sure what’s the difference, maybe the kdss ones are not extended travel. Long travel rear is a no go for kdss. Eibachs been great for me, suites my needs for what I need my 4Runner to do.

I got your theory on explaining how it works. It’s all good, Isn’t this why we joined this forum is to learn and share stuff on a common interest(4Runners)?

The overtrail combo with a TJ is a mighty good one

I think there is a lot of false information out there related to kdss. As you lift, the geometry changes but only vertically. Same as if you compress and compress the suspension, the bars only rotate, they don’t load up. If you look at the bars and rams you can see that if you go too far you’ll start to run into interference issues, but short of that, I don’t see how side to side geometry could be influenced or how it could cause additional lean.

Also mudpuppy proved pretty conclusively that the kdss valves cycle above 12 mph. Under 12, they are always open. Over 12, they open and close depending on steering and other inputs. It’s a more dynamic system than people give it credit for. Even closed the suspension can freely articulate over opposing moguls. In practice it can feel pretty magical, especially once you wrap your mind around what it’s doing.

Thanks for sharing, that’s what I was wondering. If the computer gets input in speed then it has to get another input from other sources to tell it when to open and close. Guess I shouldn’t care on how it works and care more about my kdss working properly without issues lol.

While this this true, kdss vavles open/close so many times and so fast that it renders the ride stiff and not comfortable on dirt roads when going over 12mph versus if you disable it.

Not sure yet. Gave them a thousand dollar refundable deposit and they put my name in the list. It's not going to be easy to get the overtrail from these guys. If I don't get it in 6 months, I will look elsewhere.

Suspension lift height, stiffness and travel all effect kdss. Sway control or kdss is setup for factory suspension.

Sometimes. I think it depends on the roads. Sometimes it feels remarkable supple. Other times a little harsh. It seems to do better on large bumps vs small/washboard.
