Seems the chain in my 2012 limited is way stretched. I guess it got low on oil. I added about 400 ml to top it off. I can move the chain way up and down with a screwdriver through the fill hole. I've done searches about this ad nauseum and have found nothing. Is this really that rare? Has anyone ever changed the chain in one of the full time 4wd systems? I think it was so bad it was jumping teeth. Right now the 4R is H4L with the front drive shaft off to keep it from making the horrible popping/clunking. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

^Yeah there's no tensioner in the T-case design. If the chain is stretched, you'd have to split the case and replace it. Guy in my off-road club with 2nd gen Tacoma had to do it last year.

Thanks. I've done this before on a jeep Cherokee (NP231) but I'm sure this case is way more complicated. Can't even find the parts on Rock Auto or the like. Must be a pretty rare problem.

It might be cheaper to buy a used transfer case. I had a failure of my transfer case, and I lucked out and found another one (with the same mileage even) for less than 200 hundred bucks. The only thing would be needing to verify any electric actuators work before putting it in.

I crawled around under it again today trying to find an identifier on the t-case. I couldn't find anything. How do I know what the exact model number of the t-case is?

Go on PartSouq and put in your VIN to get the Toyota part catalog for your configuration: https://partsouq.com/en/catalog/genuine/locate?c=Toyota The transfer case is VF2A series. The Toyota factory service manual has instructions for disassembly and reassembly.

It would be a good opportunity to replace the shift actuator shaft seals while you have the case open.

If I'm looking at the diagrams right, there's only one oring that seals the actuator to the housing. Am I missing something? I figure I'll change input any output shaft seals at least.
