    ugh that setup looks really good in silver which i prefer (hides surface dirt really good and my last 2-3 4runners have been silver), but the heritage blue looks really tempting (to piss off the wife since any shade of lighter blue than blueprint is her favorite color) and the everest green is the bomb (but i know it will be exclusive to the trail hunter only)

    dealerdaily wont have any selection screens until probably september maybe august. initial batches will start shipping in october/november (non allocation reserve requests) for arrivals at dealers in usa in november/december since they take about 1-2 months via RORO ships from japan.

    Getting my blood pressure rising over a vehicle I am probably not going to buy due to alternatives in Lexus/toyota being better. I think it speaks to how much of a following this vehicle has and how much, at least some of us, think Toyota messed it up.

    Actually you did pretty much say turbos where bad:
    And I pointed out that turbodiesels in heavy trucks, trains and ships run in pretty much constant boost for 100s of thousands of miles/hours under much heavier load than our little 4x4 and don't "wear out fast" Point is turbos work very well if designed right and are a technology that's been evolving for close to 90s years now.The article I linked talks about all the engineering improvements in the last 30 years that makes turbos so ubiquitous and much more drivable and reliable than they where in the 80s. If you are an engineer as you claim you would find it very interesting if you cared to read it (the online copy is a little chopped up, I read it in the paper edition of R&T)


    I'm curious what school you got your engineering degree from? (I got my BS.ME. from RPI, class of 99). Unless you are just having a hard time articulating what you are tying to say your point reads like a fundamental misunderstand of what efficiency is.

    Efficiency is a measure of what % of the energy input is turned into useful work. No matter how efficient a machine is, asking it to do more work is going to require more fuel input. You cant have a truch that gets 18mpg moving 6000lb and expect it to get the same 18mpg moving 7000 no matter what the drive system is. Thats basically expecting it to be a perpetual motion machine.

    MPG ratings for cars are economy statistics... that single number in isolation tell us nothing about the thermodynamic efficiency of the vehicle because they are not measured against size. I can build a 50lb scooter with a tiny 2 stroke engine that spits half the gas unburned out the exhaust and it may get 100mpg, but is actually horrible inefficient in a miles per gallon per ton of weight moved. Now take 200 of those scooters, pack them into a Kenworth 18wheeler that gets 5mpg and you will burn LESS fuel per scooter per mile traveled. And that's because the turbo diesel engine in the Kenwoth is significantly more thermally efficient - probably 35%+ vs. the dirty 2 stroke on the scooter that is 10% at best.


    BTW, the reason your son's Bronco lost 2mpg gallon with the bigger tires likely has very little to do with the weight (and extra 100lb on a 6500 lb vehicle wont make such a difference) and very much to do with the increased rolling resistance (drivetrain drag) of those tires. Again a concept that a mechanical or aero engineer should understand well as we learned it in our 1st years statics and dynamics courses from undergrad.

    There are some museums that you can pay for a day of driving a coal fired steam train. Its on my bucket list to do some day, I think it would be redicuolously fun.

    And those where about 5% efficient. But damn cool. :D

    WHY, did Toyota offer Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) on the new Tacoma but not carry that feature over to the new 4Runner or Land Cruiser? It seems very short sighted that it is only offered on the Tacoma within the triplets.

    For the 90% of the time most of us are on pavement, those of us who enjoy improved on-road ride comfort or have a bad lower back are willing to pay for this option. I don't care what their rationale or logic was, for me personally, this is almost a non-negotiable must have feature.

    Haha... Yeah I have to admit sometime I do miss the humor/sarcasm in internet posts and get on my soapbox when I shouldnt.

    the ironic thing is I have no plans to get rid of my 23 for this, and right now do not have any turbo or hybrid vehicles in my home garage. And I actually prefer the manual lever and big manual knobs of my current gen even though I don't delude myself of the fact that there is still a ton of electronics/software behind them (which luckily Toyota does a much better job of than BMW, VW, Land Rover, Ford, etc) . But having worked in engineering and tech for a long time I am interested in the technology and love to really dig into it and am not afraid of trying new things. Someday I may look at one but for now I am happy with keeping my dinosaur 5th gen. But I wouldn't be afraid to try the new one if I was in the buying market right now.

    @NoDak, thank you, I've used google for a deep dive search on every press release and every news article and there is not one single mention of Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) on any 2025 4Runner, including any mention of the Limited and Platinum trims. Perhaps I missed it, do you have any links to where this is discussed?

    i saw it in a article or video and it was a short blurb about it. didnt think much about it since i dont really care for it in our 23 tundra platinum. we get no benefit from it really since we dont tow or carry any big loads 99% of the time.

    That’s not necessarily true. E.g. Mercedes-Benz W123 had 300TD engine and runs 6-800k miles. Older Volvos are the same. The turbo is not the weak point at all. Mercedes-Benz Sprinters are turbo diesel engine and transporting cargo all day for decades.

    yes, articulation was not on point because I was flying an airplane over the north Atlantic at The time. Your statement is accurate mostly, however, you cannot compare A turbo diesel engine to a small four cylinder. They are two completely different animals with different power bands. You are accurate in that 100 pounds is not going to make a lot of difference but adding 1000 pounds combined through tires, bumpers, winches, skid plates, and gear you have to agree that it Is forcing the system to be operated outside of its design parameters For these vehicles Which is the point of my original comment.

    And you have to concede that adding 1000 lb to that bronco is going to decrease its MPG regardless of whether its a force fed 300 HP small displacement turbo or a loafing mildly tuned 300hp N/A big block V8. weight it weight.

    And adding 1000lb to a 5th gen is just as equally pushing the 1GR and transmission, axles,etc beyond what the Toyota designers intended 15 years ago.


    Again, I highly recommend reading that R&T article. Its very interesting and I think will address a lot of your fears about turbos.

    you are 100% correct. I have 1000 pounds of extra weight on my fifth GEN and I regeared with 4.88 gears and I’m on 35s. This thing is a damn pig, but I knew that going into it and built it for what it is, and off-road vehicle.

    my point here is that there are a lot of people on this forum and the Facebook groups historically that bitch and moan about the shitty fuel economy they are getting after building their vehicles because they lack the understanding of how things work. Furthermore, my comment about the turbo four cylinder stands. I don’t hate Turbo engines, they just don’t have any place in a four-wheel-drive vehicle in my opinion. We can agree to disagree all day long, I love a good debate.

    However, I’m done for the day. Just got to the hotel here in Dubai and I’ve been up for 18 hours. I’m going to bed.

    A regear can compensate, but what does a regear do? It increases the RPMs due to the lower gear set to bring you back into the powerband. Again, I’ll reference the ecoboost engines as they are very similar in principle to the I-force max engine. My copilot has a 3.5L F150 ecoboost on a 4” lift with 35’s. Before the lift and tires, he was getting 22-26 mpg on the highway on the stock gears (3.31). After the lift and tires he was getting 13-15mpg and staying in boost all the time. He regeared to 3.73 at the shop’s recommendation and the economy increased to around 17mpg on the highway and while the boost psi dropped a little, the system still isn’t functioning close to stock specs as he had hoped and he’s already had one of the turbos replaced under warranty with only 40k on the truck. This is not a comparison by any means, it’s an example.

    Towing is going to see reduced economy regardless. But how many people tow 24/7? Not many at all and the engineers likely designed it around that fact. Adding 1000# of constant weight is going to create early wear and tear on the system and I don’t think people are taking that into account on an unproven power train for this specific platform. Sure Lexus has had this for a few years, but not many Lexus owners out there running 1000 pounds of extra weight all day every day.

    This and the rear room legroom may make this a deal breaker for me tbh. When we camp at least two of us sleep in the back (family of 5) on the Luno mattress. I hadn't looked because I wasn't really interested but does the LC have the same issue?
