Corrosion protection inside the frame?

    What is currently the best option to treat the inside of a new frame? It seems like all of the film-based products do not have a wand that will go inside the holes without spraying and wasting half of the material out the top of the can and onto the user. Has anyone done this recently with a proven solution? Thanks.

    I'm happy with fluid film or krown being professionally applied for $140 each year. Yhey get inside the frame and inside the rocker panels. Living in the rust belt, professional rustproofing goes a long way.

    I looked, and in Florida I can't find the option to have it done by someone. It's not a big deal here but I plan to move. I don't mind doing it myself as it's very easy if I can find a wand and spray cans that actually work. We used to have Ziebart here a long time ago, but not anymore.

    Hey OP

    There may not be a single person on earth who has bought wands to spray down into the frame, and not had half the can come out the seams.

    Late last summer, I rinsed the entire frame, and treated a 1/4 of the frame for rust in and off (rear end). I really liked Black Fluid Film inside frame. I bought 3M conical spray wands and they’re were the best yet.

    The places that apply it commercially drill small holes, apply the product and then inset a plug. Their wands fog the entire area under pressure.

    That's what Ziebart used to do. Smelled really bad inside the car for a few weeks if they did the door panels.

    The one I linked to has the 24" and 34" wands. Two cans of 3M and the wands is only $100. I wonder if two 18 oz. cans is enough for the inside of the frame?

    I'll be taking all 4 door panels off to get to the speakers. Should I do in there?

    Ziebart was a scam. I had 2 cars done and they took shortcuts on both.They drilled the holes but never sprayed inside the quarter panels on my '78 IH Scout II. I paid for pressure washing on my '73 B300 Maxi Van and they never did the pressure wash and spayed over top of mud.

    You could also take a look at what Woolwax has to offer. If you already have an air compressor, or could rent a small "pancake" style compressor for a day, you can achieve good results without the hassle of aerosol cans and their limitations. https://www.woolwaxusa.com/ There will ALWAYS be unending discussion about which product is best, be it Fluid Film, Krown, PB Blaster Surface Shield or Woolwax, but in the end I think it mostly comes down to using a lanolin-based application and either carefully doing it yourself or finding someone to do it professionally that you can trust to not take shortcuts.

    They did choose an awkward name with "cavity" wax. Since I'd like to minimize the explosion out of the top of the can, I decided to give the 3M a try. They usually make a decent product, and their wands are supposed to work with their cans. If they don't work right, they can't argue that I mixed brands of cans and wands. I ordered three cans and the wands. If it works, I'll clean up the wands afterward and save them for future use. I figure a good application inside the frame where it's not exposed directly to the elements ought to last a while but not forever.

    I was curious about the ingredients so I looked up what they are. It seems to be petroleum distillates similar to deodorized kerosene and unpurified paraffin. Mineral spirits for cleanup if needed.

    I'll report back on the experience when complete.

    Absolutely, the best option is compressor and can of paint. But I ain't got that and don't plan on investing in it yet. Lots of folks have compressors tho

    So "wax' is a common term for creeping, spray products. I bought a can called "chain wax" (used on dirt bikes and shit), after a forum member highly recommended it for fluid film type touch ups. (But it's smelly stuff gotta wear a mask I think)

    The 3M video says to clean the wands by inverting the can and spraying. I have a small airbrush compressor to blow them out and cleanup is with mineral spirits, so I can wipe the wands clean. Save them for next time.

    The "cavity wax" is a thicker paraffin base compared to the lanolin products from what I read. It's all petroleum products vs. lanolin. They say to apply it three times, but that seems like a lot.

    Don’t let anyone drill holes in your 4runner to spray the rocker panels. There are several body plugs under each one that can be removed to get clear access. If you spray in there, go back a day or two after everything has crept and dripped and make sure the rocker panel drains are open (they look like little slits along the seams). Use a little zip tie end to poke in there and clear out any wax that may have plugged them.
