Accidentally used 0W-16 instead of 0W-20… Do I need to change oil over again?

Hi there. Newbie here looking for a bit of advice. I recently bought a 2022 4Runner ORP, and changed my own oil for the first time today.

Successfully drained the old oil, replaced my filter, and put skid plates back on. I then moved onto refilling with my new oil. After getting the new oil topped off, realized I made a mistake…

When buying my new oil, I accidentally bought 5qt of 0W-16 instead of 0W-20 (as specified in the manual). The other 2 qts I bought were the proper 0W-20, so I’ve currently got 5qt of 0W-16, and 1.6qt of 0W-20 in my engine.

Do I need to drain the whole thing and refill with 0W-20? Or am I safe until my next oil change? (Planning to change at 5k intervals).

I wouldn’t push it until the next oil change interval but I also wouldn’t rush to redo it. Get to it when you can?

As you are aware 0W16 is thinner. If it were my vehicle I would change it out as soon as possible but I’ll put a torque wrench on a wood lag.

As much as it sucks, I'd agree with the others. It might be fine, but it's not worth risking it.

Thank you all for quick responses! I’m going to change it out. It’s worth the bit of extra money and time to avoid the risk. Appreciate it!

$18k engine vs $35 oil. Easy decision.

An SAE oil weight difference of 4 in a 4Runner is going to change literally nothing.

Also you could just drain a quart and fill with 0w-30 and it probably would be pretty dang close to 0w-20.

Since you're changing it again: before you put the skid plates back on; refill with new oil, start the engine, check for leaks at the filter and drain plug.

If it were me, I would probably drain, leaving the volume of 16 in the new filter and housing, then re-fill/top off with 0W-20.

Yep, change it. I'd definitely leave the filter alone though. So add slightly less oil than a normal oil change.

My 2022 civic 2.0L and now my 2024 1.5L turbo civic both use 0W-20. Maybe the hybrid models use 0W-16. Corolla and Camry I think use 0w-16. These oils are going to be water soon!

OW-20 is already so thin for this truck and you went 16 lol. Change it. Keep the filter as it is, just change the oil. And replace that stupid OEM skid plate with RCI to make oil changes easy
