Hey Y’all how’s everyone? I’ve been assigned maintenance duty to the Wife’s 4Runner. An 05 SR5. The last yota I owned was an 87 Supra. What happened to this company. My Supra used to be so easy to wrench on. I’ve noticed so much extras which aren’t explained in the service manual on this thing. It’s fun to drive but man.

right now I’m working my way through some codes and trying to figure out if they may be a real problem or just work out o2 sensors. Funny because the codes thrown didn’t start til it started raining one day.

    Welcome.

OBD2 is a different animal than your non OBD 87 Supra was. It has its Pros and Cons just like anything else.

oh I know it does. This is only the first Yota I’ve had to deal with since then. Quite a bit of it makes no sense. Which are more likely redundant components of larger system sections. Right now I’m getting a p0301 code talking about the catalytic system. Parts store wants to sell me a cat right away but can’t answer me regarding the o2 sensors which to me is a more prudent method of deciding whether to spend for a new cat or replace bad o2 sensors which happens a lot and I was burned by an unscrupulous mitsu dealer who sold me a $1700 pre cat warmer assembly when what was emerald going on was two downstream peecat sensors were bad.
I don’t currently own a scanner so I can’t see or read the data the sensors are sending to the ecu. Are voltages correct as well as temperatures before worrying about gasses are equalizing within any cat. That’s a $250 vs $600+labor bill. Parts store guy looked at me like I was speaking Swahili. Their scanners don’t even have abs scanning ability which also needs read when the stability system lights are on. Can’t afford to throw parts at the vehicle hoping for a fix. I need to locate what is actually causing the problem code to be tripped. The obd2 system in the 4th gen modes isn’t that great from my reading and unrelated failures to both emissions and or brake systems can cause codes to be thrown. Found out just how interesting trouble codes can escalate this past year from buying a Harley. Getting a short to ground code off a light bulb for a turn signal showing a code off a security antenna failure. The two systems are electrically separated in the harness but lose a turn signal light and your presumed to start searching under the seat. Jeeps are the same type of trash vehicles with harnesses that house only enough wire for connections to be made. Resulting in door harnesses cutting themselves open once plastic starts to harden and you open and close your doors. Having to fix this issue on my last vehicle with a full door harness with of 2” splices to make enough play to make this not happen resulted in my not believing the black boxes under the hood all the time.

thanks to the rest of y’all for my welcome. This is the premier site for the 4Runners.

Anyone know if the 4Runner skid plates are the same as the ones for the Tacoma? Can get those all day long but put 4Runner in a search and the price jumps $200-300. At that point it’s easier the manufacture your own with steel plate.
