OTT, KDMax, etc tunes are common with the Tacoma guys. Any experiences here with tuning the 2020+ 4Runner ECU/TCU? Thanks

What is your goal for a tune? Do you actually expect a barn on wheels like 4Runner to ever be quick? If so, you need to also budget for serious hardware like a full-works supercharger. Do you need to tow exceptionally big loads? If so, you need to budget for a lot of additional coolers.

Also, are you out of warranty? Because if you tune, you will be throwing out whatever warranty is left on any engine or drivetrain components.

Also might consider your location and emission testing. I think there a member on TacomaWorld that failed emission testing due to a checksum error after flashing the ecu.

While I did do the big power booster on my engine ;) I am still a bit leery about meeting a guy in a parking lot or other random location to have him jack into and change my entire tune. I realize there are many happy customers.......just a bit gun shy on this.

With that said, I have read many accounts giving nothing but praise for both OTT and Yotawerx/KDMax.

Many reputable Yota shops do tunes. I am seriously considering the ProCharger supercharger so have held off.

I'd really like to test drive one first but SC 4Runner's are scarce where I live. At least with the ProCharger being at $6,500 USD and I can install it myself it should be worth it.

I had to look where you're at. Yep, Michigan is just a bit too far to try mine ;)

To properly supercharge you need to take care of a lot of things, like additional cooling, head bolts and gasket, spark plugs that can take the heat. Then you have to determine if you have enough fuel for the boost you plan to run, likely requiring different fuel injectors and fuel pump. Then you need to have a tune WITH a secondary map that is run in case of overtemp.

SC is not a bolt-on project, unless you are OK with grenading your engine. Don't do it on your daily driver that you need to get to work.

Ask this question on one of the tuning threads. I believe all the companies that offer tunes are on this forum.

Since your supercharged id look into seeing if there's any local or close to local tuner that can get your 4runner on a dyno and tune it. From what I recall ott added a ton of power to a supercharged 4runner.

If I get a tune that will be the way to do it for sure. If I have to drive down State to do it on a dyno I will.

I imagine that the guys on the sports car forums are trying to figure out how to convert to an SUV.

I haven’t seen any feedback from the 2020+ crowd. I think it was only recently unlocked by OV.

I may be remiss, but in my research on the Magnuson and ProCharger, none of these are required at the standard 6-7psi of boost they deliver. I agree on the cooling and I plan on a CSF 7085 2 core radiator.

Even if I wish to do things such as head bolts, gaskets and spark plugs, those are easy items for someone capable enough to do a supercharger. Both Magnuson and ProCharger have designed their systems with the DIY guys in mind.

Tuning is where a good professional comes into play.

I've been running kdmax 9.0 since it came out. It made a very nice improvement. The power/torque starts to build sooner. So 1800rpms-3000rpms is where you'll notice the most increase. It really helps getting up hills without always downshifting. And with the 2020 the tune can adjust shifting as well. Which now is very smooth.

For the money it's well worth it. Imo.

Yes find a local OTT tuner in your area and confirm. Apparently not all 2020+ calibration IDs can be tuned: https://overlandtailor.com/5th-gen-4runner-tuning

My 2010 4Runner has been running OTT9. It made a noticeable improvement through the entire rpm range, and the OEM lag at throttle tip-in is removed.

    JustDSM has a long-running thread here: https://www.4runners.com/threads/overland-torque-tune-ott-by-overland-tailor.27827/

KDMax is no longer available, bought out by competitor Yotawerx.

Yup. Still waiting to see what the end result of that acquisition by Yotawerx of KDMAX is for those of us who got the KDMAX tune. So far it's stay "tuned" for updates...

^If you're satisfied with your current tune, there's no need for ongoing updates. I'm on KDMax 6.0 with my Taco and it's such a marked improvement over the OEM Toyota tune that I'm satisified with it as-is - lets me spin 35" tires off the line on stock gearing, revs up to 7250 rpm, etc.

FYI I'm running KDMax Pro 10.0 and am perfectly happy with the tune, so that's not an issue. I would just like to know down the road what the merger means as far as updates, if any.

Anyone have issues with tuning with remote start installed? I have accessorides takeover (vehicle does not shut off when door is opened) installed, so wondering if anyone has had any experience with it?
