I mean, why would you waste money on things like real skids, a good steel bumper and a winch? Blasphemy if you have a Pro! :militarypress:

Steel bumper, winch and skid plates do not come on the Pro. That's exactly my point, pass the stupid thing, and buy those stuff with the money saved

Rubicon's transfer case alone is enough to make it stand out from the rest. What does the Pro have that makes it stand out, bunch of plastic? TRD Pro is the biggest scam from Toyota

If it is up to me you get a big THANKS for explaining exactly my thoughts. Let alone the fact that the OP is considering buying new. I do not even want to imagine the OP buying that beautiful ORP, ripping off all OEM components and replacing with "you-name-whatever" lift kit, wheels and tires and having some sort of failure requiring warranty claim, then walking to the service dept at Toyota and claiming his warranty. That would be an interesting conversation to listen...

And to our ORP friend above that says it is not the PRO Look it is the FJ40 Look...It may as well be YOUR case, but most people do not even know what is an FJ40. They see the "look" and think TRD PRO is badass. I will NEVER understand guys buying ORPs, bragging they saved $10k just to go and dump the same $10k in "mods" to look like a PRO. Some of them even go to the lengths of installing the PRO basket (which is not the best PRO feature, let's put it this way). OH, but wait now they have arguably a "better PRO". Well wait again until they have a warranty claim or try to sell their modded rigs with those big beautiful lift+wheels in the future. If you go this route, go knowing its a money pit and just forget any resale in the future. Which I get it is fine for some folks that will keep their rigs forever. But modding to look like PRO and spit when seeing one, I will never understand. End of rant. :duel:

I believe they are 2.5" but never measured, clearly they are wider and longer then standard sr5 & trd offroad.

I don't get the why the trd fox is trash talked, its valve for the 4runner from factory and is as long as the kings and fox shocks.

    20231014_130500.jpg

And these are the 2019/2020 version

You forgot to mention one very important point... you also get the smart people getting a new Pro and swapping the suspensions for a better one and reselling the Pro suspension for 800-1k. So yeah, they spend the extra 10K for the Pro badge for someone else to enjoy the Pro suspension for a fraction of the cost. You welcome! :hattip:

Well, I would NEVER call someone that does that smart. To each their own and how they spend their money, but doing what you describe is certainly worse than my example of ORP buyers saving to dump the same amount in lift kits, etc. At least the latter break even. :boom:

I've built a TRD ORP with better suspension, armor, rock sliders, winch bumper and lights for less than what a TRD PRO costs new. I wouldn't call that "breaking even." I'd call that "spending more and getting less" if you're a Pro owner. But to each their own.

Sorry, I misspoke. The shock body is 2.5, but the internals are the same as Fox's 2.0 series. Yes, they've added reservoirs, but the overall shock is generously mid-tier in terms of performance and Fox's overall lineup. They're not horrible, but the high markup of the TRD PRO simply doesn't justify the cost of that shock spec, when you can get better shocks for less $ aftermarket. You're simply paying a premium. Not unlike paying for the Tiffany name in jewelry. My wife's diamond rings beat Tiffany's standards up and down and cost less because I know what to look for.

Bottom line, I use my shit in So Cal and Baja. I run suspension and other gear to be able to go where I want to go, have it perform well and get me home. I've literally built my ORP out for less money than a stock Pro. Again, open invite to anyone with a stock Pro who wants to follow me somewhere besides the freeway. You'll be glad I wasted some of the money I saved on a winch.

I asked the same question a while back. It seems people are split on this with no clear answer.

It seems like people that get an ORP are happy with it (minus the lack of some interior features for some) and people that get a Pro are happy as well with theirs. So as long as you don’t mind for a dated interior it doesn’t matter what you do, you should be happy.

But what vehicle comes from the factory ready to tackle baja? Other then maybe the raptor.

I get the debate the trd pro cost $55k plus and id say its overpriced.. Imo the best option for anyone buying a 4runner with plans to modify is to buy the sr5 or sr5p.

    Well… hold up.

I got my new ORP for around ~$45k before taxes, etc - heavily discounted, with OEM sliders, Pro wheels, black badges, LED lights etc.

An equivalent Pro was available for a $10k markup. Pushing $67k. That’s a $22k difference. But hey, let’s assume it was at MSRP, that’s a $12k difference.

I got the OEM Pro grille, skid plate, and black valances for, around $900 total.

    Bilstein suspension 6112/5160 B8 springs. 1.9” lift front and 1.5” rear. $1400

    Installed it all myself.

That’s $2200. That’s nowhere near the $12k difference on an MSRP Pro, and literally 10 times less than the $22k difference on the actual Pro’s available to me (and many people in this forum).

Add to that that I’d still want to lift the pro higher which, kinda negates the entire reason why one paid $22k more? Literally the suspension is the only actual off road thing on the Pro. Would be very dumb to pay that just to dump it.

To each their own, I love the pro. I think it’s the best of them all. But when you consider ORP discounts, Pro markups (thanks crappy dealers) and actual owners needs, ORP is the best as soon as you factor in dollars to the equation.

Your actual buying experience like mine don’t necessarily mean they’re the same for other people.
Plenty here stated they got their ORP for 51k before taxes. I got my pro brand new in 22 for 55k before taxes. What would you have done in my case for example?
Not everyone has to chose between either 45k for an ORP or 67k for a pro.

If a Pro was $55k in your case, how much would that dealer have sold an ORP for? In your case I probably would’ve done an ORP for a likely $45k and saved $10k. But that’s just me, $55k for a Pro is as good as it gets, some of us just don’t see much value add (especially so if upgrades are planned).

My point stands, the pro is still the best car of the batch, just not the best value.

even at $51k ORP vs $55k for a Pro, ORP is still the better value. At $2200 in upgrades that’s still $1700 less than the Pro. And… an ORP welcomes upgrades. the minute you change the suspension of the Pro, the whole reason why the extra $4k was paid for the pro is out the window.

Pro is great if you don’t mind not having the best “value” but you want to have the best 4Runner - and you also plan to stay OEM.

If I planned to stay OEM, and also had a Pro at pre pandemic MSRP (not today’s dumb MSRPs) - I would’ve probably done a Pro.

ORP was 49k fully loaded when I got my pro
I cared too much about the interior features to get one though. To me it was pro or limited. I’m happy with the OEM shocks. Will replace them with something better when they go bad. I don’t claim the pro to be better than a properly modified ORP but down the road when shocks go bad (same for aftermarket ones) a pro can get better socks with better interior than ORP.
If trying to save as much money as possible, I’m curious why you didn’t get a sr5. Can get a much better deal and if aftermarket parts is the name of the game, there’s no point getting an ORP over an SR5

ps: a lot of people can’t change suspensions on their own and labor cost would not be cheap

Resale value of a pro is insane! 2016 trd pros with over 100k miles still sell for $35000+.

I would think it’s nice that the pro has the best resale value but it really doesn’t matter to me. Actually it’s kinda concerning almost how high it is. And if I wanted a 4R for 2-3 years to keep stock and make the most money back, I believe the pro is the way to do it. Best ride off road if left stock and easiest resale. I’ve had several dealerships trying to buy mine for more than what I paid when they were low on inventory.

My only problem? Resale value doesn’t mean anything to me since I will never sale it. Even the day I get a new vehicle, I won’t be replacing it. It’ll become my weekend warrior.

So to you, it’s either Pro or SR5? Go big, or go home? ORP shouldn’t exist? lol

Not sure what you mean, but interior on the Pro and ORP are identical, minus auto AC, JBL.

ORP is the best value to me, best bang for the buck. SR5 lacks a manual 4WD selector, locking diff, etc.

My goal is not to “save as much money as possible” - my goal is to spend only on the things I care about. Saving as much money as possible, then we can take it all the way and wind up in a Venza or worse.

That's not what I said. Since you were pointing out how much better aftermarket parts you add from money saved between and ORP and a Pro, then why not getting an SR5 and adding front/rear lockers? Wasnt this your point? Big savings to add better aftermarket parts?
The only add on about the ORP is KDSS. And if one truly values KDSS over anything else then any other trims are irrelevant. The question (as suggested by this thread) is if KDSS is worth getting over other features that comes with pro (seems like OP doesnt plan on hard core off roading so Fox shocks are perfectly fine for it. they want JBL, trd exhaust, pro wheels, etc... ). Is it cheaper to get an ORP and add all that afterwards without still getinng the pro interior? What abour the heritage grill, black valence, and other pro stuff that many people add? and labor cost for those who dont known how to change suspensions, UCA, LCA, etc... It starts adding up

Regarding interior features between ORP and Pro, you're getting straight from factory dual zone auto climate control, JBL, remote start, auto headlights, and other minor improvements.

What does the ORP bring YOU (since you dont want KDSS) that you cant add on an SR5 with aftermarket other than the manual 4WD lever vs dial? There's the gimmicky crawl control that most people doing serious off roading do not use. What else? Or are you saying youd rather spend several thousands more just for that (dont get me wrong I like the lever more as well, but is it worth thousands of dollars more if thats the only difference?).
What I'm trying to say here, the point you're making against the Pro is the exact same a SR5 will make against your ORP. If you're happy that's great, but whats right for you doesnt mean its right for someone else and vice versa

I dont get your point about the Venza. 4runners across all trims have the same engine, BOF, etc... why a Venza and not a hyundai accent while you're a it?

I understand the differences between the cars. And I don’t need to be convinced on what’s better than what. Like I said, the Pro is the best of the batch, just not the best value. But it’s all relative right? To someone with a $500k car budget paying $45, $55k, or $39k it’s all kind of a wash anyway, and the Pro is probably the way to go.

I buy my cars the way I like them, best bang for the buck. My S2000 is a standard model not a CR.

My Miata is a Club not a grand touring. So no auto headlights, blah, blah, blah.

    My 4Runner is an ORP.

My 06 Civic Si was the non-Navi one, so many people down the road regretted the aging Navi.

My Passport was the TrailSport not the Elite, I lost $0 at sale time, didn’t take the hit of the meaningless feature depreciation.

I can go on and on.

The manual lever is very important to me, as are the other off road technologies - so no SR5 for me. Again, best bang for the buck.

I mean, no need to go in circles right? One buys what they like; and I just presented my thoughts.

I agree with you 100% here.

the $22k claim difference between an orp and pro was what made me react to you, initially. It was a bit outrageous to present it that way, even if that was true for your case.
But yes, you're entitled to get what you want, after all it's yours. If you think the Pro is not worth it to you just like someone with an SR5 say the OR is not worth it to them that's perfectly fine. As long as everyone is happy with what they have that's what really matters

Indeed. I also presented the case where we assume MSRP too. Nonetheless, the outrageousness really was from dealerships.

No vehicle comes off the showroom floor ready for Baja, but I've built out a very Baja-ready ORP (with way better suspension and accessories) cheaper than the cost of a Pro these days.
