    TRD PRO vs KDSS
Greetings 4Runner friends!! I just joined the forum and am strongly considering purchasing one of the last best of the best vehicles ever made. I have previously owned and '08 and '20. Have a 2021 Tundra for towing an RV. Am trying to decide between the TRD PRO or the ORP with KDSS. Read one persons post who preferred the PRO after test driving both. We don't intend to do any hardcore off road adventures, but you never know. My understanding is the KDSS shines both on paved driving to stiffen up while cornering and also provide greater articulation off roading.

I would LOVE input and others perspectives to hopefully shed some clarification for me. There are some "standard" things on the PRO I really like: TRP rock guard, PRO exhaust, JBL 15 or 18 speaker sound system, standard black TRD wheels. I know, some of those things can be added to any 4Runner. Definitely don't want a rig to have too much sway when cornering. Are the FOX shocks adjustable?

    Thanks for your input!!

Love the on road handling of my KDSS. Test drove an SR5 Premium and it was terrible comparatively.

My take - if you get the kdss you should swap the shocks to something better. Arguably, you can get as good or better damping characteristics as the pro, plus the advantages of kdss. Unfortunately, the stock shocks let the rig down, and so out of the box I think the pro suspension is better.

If you don’t want to mod, then get the pro and you’ll be happy.

Fox shocks are not adjustable. But they are 2.5" wide so there isn't much body roll if any.

You should find a dealer with both a trd pro and trdor with kdss. That way you can decide for yourself.

KDSS all the way. But a heads up, later if you go nuts and decide you want 37s and swaybar removed, KDSS will not allow that.

Also, KDSS makes the 4Runner less truck-like, it corners really well.

If slow crawling(Like in the picture) and good road manners are your thing, go KDSS. If desert running is your thing go Pro. They are both not the best choice for pure offroading though. For pure offroading, you get a barebone SR5 for like $39,000 and mod the crap out of it.

    $39,000(SR5) + $13,000 + $3000(Eaton lockers) = $55,000 and for that you will kick TRD Pro's butt.

No SAS, you will kill the ride. If you don't care about the ride, then go this route.

That thing is probably the same width as a 6th gen TRD Pro, assuming there will be one.

My vote is for TRD Pro or even Non KDSS ORP for reliability, trouble free mods (skid plates, sliders) , better clearance and comfort. They also have better flex on rear solid axle.

Thanks everyone!! Greatly appreciate and value your input and experiences….it’s a tough decision. Just drove a PRO, and was fairly impressed with how it drives, cornered better than I expected. Unfortunately the dealer didn’t have anything with KDSS to compare. I think most people who have KDSS really like it, so we shall see.

If Toyota wasn't so coy with the Pro allocations and thus choking the flow of pros allowing some dealers to play some markup games, I think more people would be willing to give the pro a shot. But as it is, there is like a 20:1 ratio in availability of ORP with KDSS(many on dealer lots with thousands in discount to boot) to Pro so you will naturally see many more people loving their ORPs.

There is nothing special about the Pro to be quite honest, other than the Fox suspension in which people with Pro's eventually end up swapping for something way better. Thus, I much rather have an ORP with KDSS or save your money and get a ORP if you can't find one with a KDSS.

Went with KDSS and haven't been disappointed driving this road all winter. Better than the new Bronco at handling the corners.

I should feel like shit because the ORP and ORP w/KDSS should be the ‘Real Pro’, but I don’t.

You guys can enlighten me on what are the differences between the ORP and Pro other than Fox suspension and a Pro badge, LOL. Maybe I'm wrong:notsure:but, there are plenty of members that have gotten a simple OR and built it better than any Pro's on the road, so go figure.

I wouldn't overpay for a Pro. The Fox shocks on them are mid-tier at best in Fox's lineup. Beyond that, it's badging and some minor upgrades like separate climate control, auto-off lights and JBL speakers. All of which you grossly overpay for.

My ORP w/o KDSS and tuned King Adjustable shocks blows a Pro away for less money. If you go KDSS, I'd recommended DrKDSS upgrades to get the most performance and flexibility out of that system. Dom makes great products and really has that market nailed. Even with the upgrades, you're still less $ in than a Pro.

You'll never meet a more energetic group than ORP owners trying to convince themselves and everyone else that their truck is the best. In the real world, re-sale and OEM gear are the real key factors. A stock ORP and a stock PRO will always be the best. Any "mods" beyond anything cosmetic are a huge waste of money, wreck re-sale, decrease reliability, etc. I have modded my fair share of cars/trucks...every time, every time, I regret it in the end.

OP, just picture yourself buying a brand new ORP, then thinking...I need new wheels and tires. Also, that front end dip is bothering me, better get a crappy level kit, or some garbage lift, or spend $5 on some super high end, over built suspension, thinking you are smarter than Toyota engineers. Now, start thinking about the front grill...that Pro sure looks better, I guess I'll change that too. Etc etc etc. Anyways, I know there are 10 ORP owners for ever 1 Pro owners so I'll just get blasted for this, but whatever.

Kdss is a high-end feature that started on Lexus and Land Cruiser, and is made in Japan. And we are lucky it's even available on the 4Runner Tacoma and FJ Cruisers never got it. So why would you pass on this amazing thing and go for the mediocre Fox shocks that were installed at the port

So just keep everything stock, have no fun, don't improve the capability, only focus on resale value and Fox 2.0 shocks are better than anything else on the market. Got it.

Open invite to come to Southern California and do some trails with me in your Pro. Let's watch it outperform all my wasted time and money.

You might say how come you have the TRD Pro look if you don't care about TRD Pro. That's not a TRD Pro look, that's an FJ40 look. Notice I don't have the stupid TRD Pro skid plate

Having just gotten done modifying a new kdss orp, I agree with what you’ve said, except for the fact that Pro is missing kdss. If it wasn’t for that, I’d have bought a pro. But I want kdss! So I was forced into orp + mods.

The result is great, but I would have been happy to stay stock if I could have.

ORP with kdss here. Having come from a 2013 SR5 it was night and day the difference kdss makes. First 4Runner I ever drove that didn’t have the nose dive from braking. That being said, I wanted a lift and put on Bilstein 6112 and 5160s, along with coils and now absolutely love it.
