That ship has sailed. Wrangler and Gladiator are all you get. I heard Jeep is bringing a lil funny IFS offroader though.

A good IFS offroader isn't hard to do, basically take a Subaru Crosstrek, give it a little more suspension travel and a 2 speed transfer case and we are in business. The trick, the way I see it, is how to build it short enough to be able to go over stuff without getting high centered, and have the corporate CAFE analyst sign off on it as a low volume niche vehicle.

I had some hopes for the Renegade to be developed with a long travel version being a subcompact crossover, it could be an attainable Jimny for us, but that never went anywhere.

The LC gets a turbo hybrid. The rrunner gets a turbo non-hybrid is what that paragraph says.

Or are you equating not getting a hybrid to "detuning"? If so that euphemism is doing a lot of work.

I think not making off road capable unibodies is a choice. Jeep did it with the XJ and Nissan did it with the Pathfinder. But the venn diagram of the desirable characteristics in a truck and desirable characteristics from a unibody would be nearly mutually exclusive.

Since most off road vehicles are build off trucks, and trucks have many good reasons not to be unibody, we never see capable unibodies.

Apart from the XJ of course, but the idea of a road focused SUV wasn't even invented when it was designed, so of course it had to be capable. I bet if you put those same designers in today's market it would come out neutered like the rest of then.

I am thinking the USP is its not new and looks (at least exterior) exactly like 5th gen, which I think is a looker. Going by pics of the rear.

    Mall crawling kit.
I could at least understand if that was done to make it easier to replace and upgrade as the car ages. Similarly to how car stereos could be easily swapped in 80s era cars. This is not the case here. So it is really unforgivable design fault.

Toyota hasn't shrunk any model during redesign in the last 20 years! If you go back 30 years, the only one I can think of is the Supra (the BMW-made model got wider but shorter wheelbase). The way fuel economy targets are set up, favors vehicles with larger footprints.

Yeah looks more boxy. older school-looking is pretty popular right not. Retro 4x4's are pretty popular and Toyota seems to be really getting behind it, so I'm not too surprised. I'm just hope it maintains a fresh look with the sharper angles and boxiness.

I would in fact prefer they detune the motor for 4Runners if it is supposed to be non hybrid. Toyota makes wonderful motors when they understress them.

I trust toyota to make a reliable hybrid drive train and would appreciate the amazing mpg when 4wheeling and to not need or feel the need to carry gas.

Well based on the apparently well established fact that this is going to be a Tacoma with a cap screwed on to it, there will absolutely be a manual. It's exactly the same as the Tacoma.

Basically copying every other manufacturer. I'm not a fan. Hell, I march to the beat of a different drum, not the same as everyone (most) else...

More like every manufacturer has to meet emission and mpg requirements.

Wouldn't it be funny if the roll-down rear window is the only marketable feature, because we've seen all the rest in the Tacoma?

Toyota went big with the new Tacoma launch, shipping all those vehicles to Puako, Hawaii. Inviting all the bloggers to drive them around the dirt track on the private land. For all the attendees, they had a Hawaiian Luai with a traditional ground roasted pig and fire dancers, the night before.

What are they gonna do for the 4Runner? :militarypress:

It would be funny if they made the rear roll down window only available on the more expensive higher trim models

OKay, 4500 lbs...like that makes a difference when you're going 100 feet per second.

I like the simplicity of non-hybrid, especially since you don’t have to worry about the expense of a battery replacement when the car is 10 years old. On cars that old, big expenses like that get hard to justify.

On the other hand, having access to a built in battery has the potential to make it very easy to use for camping and long off-road trips. Imagine being able to run a fridge, induction stove, heat water, and top off with solar power, etc. with little or no modifications. That would be pretty sweet, and get you the slightly increased mpg. It also might make it easier to justify the replacement expense when the time comes.

Yeah the tocoma hybrid is going to have a 2,400 watt inverter. That's crazy awsome..

The 4runner gets 16/19 mpg. The new landcruiser hybrid gets 22/25 which is safe to say what the 4runner should get because it would be Damm near the same vehicle. That's 34.5% better mpg.

This website claims a hybrid battery should be replaced at 150k miles
    https://www.toyota101.com/service/service-and-parts-tips/hybrid-battery-replacement-lifespan/

34.5% of 150k miles is 51,750 that you just got for "free" so to speak. Say average fuel cost is $4 per gallon. (Lot more here in the bay area).

Had you paid $4 for the 51,750 miles at an average mpg of 17.5 (the 16/19mpg of the current gen) that would be 2,957 gallon at a cost of $11,828.

Buying that new battery at 150k miles should be fine especially woth toyotas resale value.

    The internet says 4-8k

When they start getting really prevelant there will be aftermarket ones for way less money that are just as good.

If they give the Off Road trim the huge inverter, it will be very hard to deny the added utility of the hybrid.

Wait, how are the tacomas trimmed out now…can you get a hybrid with rear locker?

Toyota hiding their options behind layers and layers of additional packages seems to have reached comical levels with the Tacoma. I suppose that’s coming for the 4runner too.

Yeah you could run and induction stove top so if there was a bunch of wind or rain you could cook in a more enclosed space and not worry about fumes or just never have to fuel with you. One less thing.

Charge your battery bank super quick. Use corded tools. It's huge.

The Tacoma hybrid power train goes into production this month. I don't know if I am recollecting correctly but I think it might be available at least as an option on every trim above the SR5 (maybe sport?). But we will know this month.

What I find cool is toyotas consolidation. They have the same frame now acccross a lot of vehicles. And also now engine. So that is many many more of the same engine being produced and real time research so to speak. So even while I'm sure the reliability is going to be good out of the gate because it's toyota, I'm sure they will make it even better as they go.

And yeah I did notice too that each Tacoma trim has a comical number of packages. You want the top package on the off road? That will be like 10 or 11k or whatever it is. That's a bit rediculous.

Without even talking about money saved from the mpg increase given by the hybrid, even if we were to break even but we also get the 2400 watt inverter, increased range, better off roading capability from the EV aspect of the hybrid, it’ll be a win in my books

Nope. Hard pass. Buy a 2024 before they are gone forever. It will last 15 years or more if you take care of it.
