So...I've been reading about the 4R shimmy issue that some have experienced. I recently bought a 4R and it is fine, no shimmy (with the Dunlops). But, the one I test drove did have it (also with Dunlops)--I noticed the slight vibration at around 60mph during the test drive (before I even knew this was a potential problem). When I picked up my 4R, I immediately tested it and it was perfectly fine.

But, now I am about to upgrade the tires to the Toyo AT3s and am a bit scared that this will produce the shimmy. Not that there is any information on this particular tire causing it, but just the notion that any change could push me from the "thank God I have no shimmy" category to the "I have shimmy and nothing fixes it" category.

I would hate for my desire to improve my vehicle result in a problem. This would not be the first (or second, or hundredth) time in my life that being dissatisfied and trying to improve something produced a problem!

Any thoughts on this? Feel free to just call me silly and move on.

Any other thoughts on moving from the Dunlops to the Toyos for those who have done it?

    Thanks!

Don't stress yourself out. That's my advice. Life is too short to drive on those Dunlops.

Based on collective experience here, you're pretty unlikely to get a "nothing fixes it" shimmy by switching tires. You may have to get them balanced more than once if you lose the installer lottery, but nothing unfixable in a vehicle new enough to still have factory tires with enough tread left to drive on.

Road force balance and you'll be good.

I put new wheels and tires on mine when I got it. I had them balanced twice by two different shops....still had a shimmy. Discounttire road force balanced them and they're about perfect.

I’m extremely particular. The slight vibration I get, on occasion, with the stock Nittos is insignificant. This sometimes happens more than others based on outside temps and tire temp. Because it only happens at 60-65 it’s not a mph range I spend crusing in for the most part. A minor annoyance I’ll accept for the trade off of all the reasons I purchased the 4Runner for.

I plan on purchasing the AT3’s as well, get em and don’t look back…

Had a slight shimmy once and a while with the Dunlops when the tires were cold. Switched to Toyo AT3's and run them for 40,000 mi with no shimmy at all. Running Mickey Thomson's now still no shimmy.

Make sure you use a quality shop that uses a road force machine to balance the tire.

I went from the Dunlops to the Toyos and noticed no change at all in the way of a shimmy.

No shimmy present after swapping in the Toyos, very happy!

Toyos look great, sorry for the quality of the pics.

I've had AT2's and 3's. No shimmy. The 3's are quieter.

Never drove it on the factory tires but no shimmy on the Toyos (hopefully that holds when I have them swapped over to my new wheels on Thursday).

Took off old wheels with AT3's and put on new wheels with new AT3's and no shimmy on either set.
