I have neuoropathy below both knees - lost feeling and muscle control to both my feet. Any

feedback would be appreciated from those folks who kitted out their rig with adaptive controls.

    Thanks!

"Adaptive controls" to me sounds like adaptive cruise control on newer models - doubt it can be retrofitted into older models even with the sensor and cameras because it would also need the head unit and software/firmware to run it.

I don't have it on the 4runner but have it on jeep grand cherokee and it's turned off for a reason. We are years, if not decades away from self driving technology being perfected (even at the pedal level - forget about steering). Not sure about Toyota, but the jeep turns off under 15 mph anyway - I assume because they didn't want the liability of rear end crashes.

I can see that @Tank010's first post upset you but he's not wrong. Maybe it could have been worded a bit differently or maybe you just don't want to hear "there is no alternative" but if the loss of feeling and muscle control is bad enough that you can't get pedal feedback or have issues with precise control of your foot movements, he is unfortunately correct.

There may be some specialty vehicles or modifications that can help, but I would contact and leave that to professionals who know what they're doing rather than opinions from random people on the interweb.

I'm guessing there are specialized vehicles or systems that could work for you (replacing throttle and braking with hand controls maybe?) but if you are specifically looking for something like adaptive cruise control to solve the issue, I'd say that's a hard no.

I haven't seen a 4R with adaptive controls, but I've seen other off-road capable vehicles set up with them, including a lifted and armored Mercedes Sprinter van. I've also seen vendors that specialize in outfitting adaptive control vehicles. Someplace like that could be a better starting point.

That's a troll. He's trying to bait you, and by responding to him he has succeeded in gaining your attention, which is what he truly wants. You can "ignore" him and never see his posts again.

Just looking for feedback men. I'm going to go the Rx route, stay insurable. Figured that would be a given, never gave thought to making any modifications otherwise.

I have a guy at work that runs the controls for braking and throttle. He seems to do fine with adapting to it. It did take some getting used to learning to drive with your hands doing everything. Just take your time learning it, before going crazy on the roads.

Adaptive controls sounds like a vehicle modified so you can use gas and brake with your hands rather than your feet or at least an alternate way without relying too much on your legs.

Why the hell would it mean adaptive cruise control?

an older gentlman who used to work with me and was semi disabled (he could only walk with a walker) had a tacoma that was fitted with hand controls. I havent seen it in a 4R but I dont see why it wouldnt exist

It is a process and protocol must be followed:

Rx or diagnosis of what equipment is available/needed.

    Driver instruction and evaluation

    Driver on the road training.

As soon as I lost feeling below my knees I forfeited my driving privileges to my wife. I haven't driven in over a year.

Many thanks to those who responded intelligently. I have done some homework before I posted, looking at specifically those businesses that can provide such a service

in the state of Ohio. Until you lose the privilege to drive through no fault of your own you can't appreciate the loss of independence.

Well, I can walk you through my thought process:
    1. Title inquired about adaptive controls
    2. Body stated loss of feeling and ability to use pedals
    3. Seeing OP has a 2013 and asked about kitting a vehicle with adaptive controls, my mind immediately jumped to adaptive cruise control since it's a commonly discussed (on this forum) newer technology available for our vehicles that can essentially operate the pedals in certain circumstances
    4. I was obviously not the first person to misunderstand but rather than taking 2 seconds to explain they meant hand controls the OP replied with some cryptic fucking Yoda statement, followed up with cursing the other person out like an angry know-it-all that was going to do whatever the hell they wanted and didn't want to hear dissenting opinions

If OP were seriously considering something like TSS to solve his issue, I'd hope everyone here would consider it dangerous and try to explain why it's a bad idea, so I did. I've heard of worse ideas from people so I guess the real question is, not being familiar with hand controls being termed "adaptive controls", why the fuck would I NOT think that's what he meant until he finally explained?

Edit: I reread it and it wasn't really cursing out the other person - just telling them that they're an idiot and to stop being so damn dumb, without explaining why

Apparently the terminology isn't as widely understood as it should be. I figure a pretty big share of people who are familiar with it know someone who uses it. I certainly do.

I've had several customers over the years with the hand controls installed on the accelerator and brake pedals. Having tried them on brief test drives, I think you will be able to feel confident once you get practice using them. Good luck with your condition and getting back some of your independence.
