Aaaaaaaaand ... wait for it ... all of the FALSE and DECEPTIVE information that I deliberately feed to them to screw them up!

If I replace the DCM, I wonder if I can put someone else's VIN on the replacement? :D I see that putting in the VIN is part of the DCM setup for a replacement DCM and they cannot be reused in another vehicle once set up. You say I was where on that date? No, that must have been another vehicle! Just kidding. I'll simply defeat it and call it good enough.

Precisely. Im trying to disable DCM, DCM and this as a service are unrelated.

I am using this forum for free, I didn’t purchase it and owned it. So, they can do as they please and I have to suck it up, no?

If I purchased it and owned this forum however, that would be a different conversation.

All these arguments are weak: there’s a huge difference between tracking someone’s physical movements: eyes, foot, acceleration, braking, steering, precise location, physical appearance, speed etc etc - on my own property and at all times vs… whether I visited Selena Gomez’s instagram and I also like Hanes underwear, android products, and Toyo tires by using “free” third party services so that they can sell me ads. Big difference. The latter is a choice, the earlier is a violation.

The Toyota policy makes me feel violated just by reading it!

People who didn't read all of the information policy details, or ignored them, or have forgotten them, see post #116 because it's worse than some might have expected. https://www.4runners.com/threads/2024-spyware.37413/page-4#post-568065

I love the clause that says your camera images can be used to develop high-resolution maps. You might as well be driving one of the Google camera cars if you allow that, and I'll bet that millions of people have.

Oops. I missed a page of the privacy policy so I had to go back. Voice recording is obviously a built-in "feature." I missed that before.

There is almost no end to it! There are pages, and pages, and pages of this stuff. Has anyone actually read all of this? Do you always notify everyone who gets in your vehicle that their data is being collected? It's your responsibility to do that according to the policy. Did everyone agree to do that when you bought your vehicle?

You can go to the website shown below and read page after page after page of this nonsense if you like. The more I read, the closer the "Ultimate Antispyware Mod" moves to the top of my list. I won't consider the vehicle to be mine until all this nonsense is disabled. Otherwise, Toyota and other companies still own it and I'm just an occupant. Pull the plug. Remove module. Contact Toyota to discover and delete what they already have.

    upload_2024-3-26_22-55-0.png

So the vehicle responds to commands from outside? What functionality is built in there, whether enabled or not, and whether they admit to it or not? Can it ever be breached? 100% certain that if it is there, it can be breached.

    upload_2024-3-26_23-25-5.png

Profiling for legal or similarly significant effects? Exactly what is that?

Funny, the tin foil hat brigade has their panties in a knot over being tracked in their truck. Yet they post on this forum which opens them up to hackers all over the world accessing their personal information. And they drive their trucks down streets that are lined with surveillance cameras that capture their every move, and license plate number. Then they buy gas with credit cards, call their boss on a cell phone and ask google for directions to the closest liquor store.

But by sweet little baby jesus, they'll be safe from "the gumment" if they just disconnect features for which they have paid.

    Sheesh!!!

    False #1.

    False #2.

False #3 (where I live), and there is a fix for that if you live in one of those places. This is the only item I don't care a whole lot about, but it has been addressed by improving our laws.

False #4. Ever hear of something called money? It's still a thing.

False #5 and #6. Boss does not call me. I do not call boss. No cell phone.

False #7. Never heard of this Google thing.

False #8 - All of the pages of excerpts I have posted are from Toyota, not any government.
False #9 - I DID NOT PAY for Toyota to collect data and I receive exactly NO benefit from any of the policies listed or "features" as you call them, if you actually read the pages instead of just spouting off. Instead, Toyota GETS PAID by collecting and selling my data. They get paid for the entire life of the truck in fact, until we remove all of this spyware garbage.

How do you know that when determining the price of the model that long term data monetization wasn't factored in? Perhaps the initial price was set lower, to be more competitive, by shifting those profits to monetization of user data. So maybe you did pay, or benefit, from the policy.

Because Toyota isn't stupid. If I opt out of all of their games and/or disconnect their spyware, they (supposedly) make nothing. For them to plan on getting that revenue for the 20 years or so of operating life for the truck would be some really screwed up and foolish bookkeeping (gambling) on their part.

You're right, Toyota isn't stupid. But you can do simple math to forecast how many users would opt out and go from there. So even though they don't make money off of selling your specific data, they still can factor it into the sale price.

But also you opting out is a data point. So they are still using your data, just different data than you are anticipating.

There are no "eye" and "foot" tracking sensors to my knowledge, in my 2023 4runner.

facebook/insta default location sharing is on. You have to turn it off. google maps, or really any maps will not work unless you are sharing the location. Social platforms, due to their "social" nature, know about you way more than you think you do. Apple's IDFA was introduced in iOS 14, prior to that facebook could track you across apps. Think about that. They have a treasure trove of data, even if its dated up to 2020/21 on billions of its users, that it collected from all apps not just facebook. Even now, why do you think the feeds that get served are so personal to you?
Visiting Selena Gomez's instagram is the least of your problems.

I have exactly none of the issues you describe. It is not necessary to use these things to live, and I don't intend to add Toyota spyware to the list either.

It's inconceivable to many people that they are capable of living without these things.

It is possible to remove Borg implants:

    upload_2024-3-27_20-32-53.png

I have managed to remove the Borg implants from myself and my surroundings despite the best efforts of companies to assimilate me.

Now I will remove the Borg implants from my Toyota 4Runner, and they too will not assimilate me.

Ours had this sticker and when I asked the salesman about it he pulled it off, balled it up, threw it away and said “it’s nothing”. I hadn’t even got to read what it was. Does anyone have a picture of this sticker?

No, but there is a whole lot more to it than the salesman's lie and the sticker. I posted the excerpts and highlights in a few posts above. Next time I am at a dealer, I can see what the sticker says, IF they are leaving them in place. I do not recall seeing a sticker in a number of dealer visits and test drives.

I’d love if you could come up with a list of NEW vehicle models that do not have a cellular connection. From what I’ve looked into, even the cheapest vehicles on the US market are connected. It’s kind of like coming up with a list of “dumb” televisions.

The market is driving the consumer more and more these days.

Street cameras are fine. They’re public roads, as long as it’s done from the roads and not with my own property. Credit cards is also fine, it’s someone else’ money that you’re borrowing. Cameras on others private properties is fine, you’re using someone else’s property. Tracking location and driving habits in a rental is fine. It’s a rental. Internet tracking, that’s questionable but it’s a different conversation.

Nobody is trying to escape the planet in their 4Runners here. People just don’t want DCMs, why is that so hard for many to understand?

Just because one eats apples doesn’t mean one has to like oranges.

It’s like saying “why cover up with an umbrella when it rains if you’re going to get wet under the shower anyway”

Why does it have to be new? Just own an older one. What is this obsession with having to have new cars? Very wasteful and often a significant financial burden for many of the looney toones posters in here

It's what people want, end of story. But there's no reason they should also have to commit to being a constant revenue source to the company from which they already bought a product at full price. Since personal data is now a form of currency/trade, I'm not a fan of just giving mine away without control or at least getting something back in return. There are lots and lots of government regulations surrounding monetary transactions, seems like similar scrutiny should be given to the collection and use of personal data.

How it's collected, what it's being used for, and how it might impact them personally are all valid concerns, and I wouldn't call people "looney toons" for wanting some sort of control over it.
