TRD Pro Fish Tailing?

Has anyone experienced fish tailing when there is a little bit of water on the road in a TRD Pro with the tires that come on the car? I had a 2007 Limited for years and never experienced this. Maybe it's not quite fish tailing, but it definitely feels different in the Pro when it's been raining really hard with water pooling. It's a weird sound when it's sloshing under the car, and I feel like the car jerks and slips a little.

 

I would check the tire pressure first. When I took delivery of my ORP the tire pressure was set to 40psi from the dealership. Dropped it to the proper 29psi and it rode much nicer.

 

Oh interesting. I've never thought about that. Thank you! The only thing I've thought is because it sits higher off the ground, but I still feel like it should grip the road well, especially since Toyota is known for safety.

 

Nope I haven't had any tire related issues on factory installed in Snow or Rain.

 

1) I only had few miles on the stock Nitto Terra Grapplers and I didn't like them. I haven't tested much against hydroplaning but I had problems even with little mud.Since they are not snow rated (3peak mountain snow flake rating) I defenetly wanted snow rated A/T tires here in CO with a matching spare tire.

2) I don't think its fair to compare 2007 Limited with fulltime 4WD vs TRD Pro in 2WD. Even 4th gen V6 models had 4H option with center diff free. Wish 5th gen had that option.

3) I normally run at 34-35psi on my tires and never feel comfortable running below 32psi because I'm scared that they will overheat and have unseen tire damages that could potentially be catastrophic (not sure, I'm just a scary guy).

 

I have never had that issue with my current Pro or previous Pro, both on stock Nittos. Is this a one-time incident or does it happen all of the time?

 

Every time there is a ton of rain and water pooling on the roads. Not normal rains, but storms.

 

It's the difference between rear-wheel drive in the Pro vs. full-time 4WD in the Limited.

 

Are you running a pedal commander or anything similar? How heavy is your throttle foot?

 

Put in 4hi next time in storms. RWD with short wheelbase likes to fish tail.

Yea, if you ran the '07 in 4WD (center-unlocked) or had a 4WD V8 those would be superior to the part-time system we have in inclement weather.

One reason I looked for a 4th gen but few were available. Probably the biggest thing I miss from my Sorento. Full-time AWD would wear out a pricey clutch in the back eventually but it was surefooted in everything I threw at it.

 

Sounds like you are driving too fast for the road conditions and trying to make it the 4Runners fault.
BTW, 29PSI is too low tire pressure for normal driving! Read the B pillar tag for recommended tire pressure.
The Pro is no higher that an SR5 except 1" higher in the front.

 

The Nittos are garbage in the rain. If I didn’t live where I do these would have come off immediately.

Drove through very heavy rain on a partially flooded highway last week. Still no issues with traction at highway speeds.

 

My spare was inflated to 55PSI (tire says 45PSI max). It is factory mistake that PPI didn't catch - they used emergency tire pressure with a full sized spare wheel. UGH.

Is it new or used? Stock or modified? You don't have it in 4WD and the diff is unlocked correct? What’s the tire pressure? What’s the tread depth? Do you have a pedal commander/throttle controller? What type of road surfaces? Have you had a body on frame SUV or truck before?

Lots of questions but without answers I'd be inclined to start with a zero point calibration.

 

How can you fish tail with the traction control bs? What year is your 4runner?

 

So you got the fish tailing version of the Pro. Should have checked before buying.

It's possible, it just depends how big of a fishtail she means. Even with traction control, it's not hard to get an inch or two of swing in unfavorable conditions. Also, sensing any swing at all can be disconcerting when you know how badly wrong it can go.

 

I didn't know our 4Runners where actually Ford Raptors? I guess because some of have Raptor lights, Eh?

 

Good Year Duratracs FTW. I did a ton of research and they only way they slip is if i over do it. Awesome in the snow as well.

 

You can hydroplane/drift regardless of vehicle with excess speed on wet/flooded roads.

 

My traction control kicks in at the slightest indication of loss of traction. It really works.

 

I beg to differ on the vehicle doesn't matter? A PU will definitely handle way different then an SUV in those test conditions.

Ya the weight is a trade off, but I have the LT version in a/t3w on my Tundra and they have been amazing
