I am really liking this Blanco.

 

Yesterday we celebrated March 12th.

I’ll give you the short version of the back story: Morgan was fresh out of college, a young professional living in the city, happily employed and loving life. During the summer she started to feel a bit under the weather, but it just lingered and worsened. Her health rapidly declined over the next 5 months, then spiraled out of control. Doctors couldn’t explain it - her body was breaking down, she was in constant pain, her muscles were failing, she lost motor skills, she could no longer walk. She was diagnosed with a very rare form of Lyme Disease that attacks the brain and central nervous system, March 12th the doctors ordered her to 24/7 indefinite bed rest. Her body continued breaking down, she lost her ability to speak. Her diagnosis became terminal and she was asked to prepare an end-of-life plan. Test results showed her blood shouldn’t have been capable of supporting life. Nobody could explain why she was still alive, yet there she was, clinging to life, refusing to let go. She laid in that bed for 4 years fighting a hopeless, losing battle, against impossible odds and won! Somehow, she slowly started to improve. Doctors called it a “miracle”, that downplayed the hell she fought through. A miracle didn’t save her life, she did.

Recovery was long and slow. She relearned to walk and talk. Extensive physical therapy built atrophied muscle up enough do everyday life on her own. 6 years ago, still very fragile and barely out of bed, March 12th rolled around. She decided to take control. It wasn’t going to be a painful annual reminder of traumatic memories, it was going to be a celebration. She took the anniversary of the worst day of her life and had a party. March 12th will forever be a celebration of life and a day to make good memories checking something off the bucket list.

We slept in and went out for lunch.

She always wanted to learn to Tango, so lessons was out next stop. After that we got a late dinner followed by a speakeasy.

The finally of the night was some 12 year Pappy. She always wanted to try it, this was the occasion.

I remember when I learned why they call it "Delirium." Apparently, if you drink enough of it, you forget what day it is. You might even show up to work 2 hours late the next day because you thought it was Saturday.

She’s a remarkable woman and the strongest person I’ve ever known.

 

I've acquired a decent little collection while I'm down visiting my Mom and her BF. The Tequila Ocho Añejo is very good. I don't really like the Codigo much. I just picked up the Tequila Ocho Reposado and Cazcanes Blanco this morning, and I haven't tried them yet. I like the Xicala Mezcal, too. Probably my favorite Mezcal I've tried so far.

I started asking around about Fortaleza, and apparently it's just impossible to get around here. I'm pretty happy with everything else I've picked up, and plan on taking some of it back to Wisconsin to add to my stash.

Yes, i have trouble getting it here also, i was at Total Wine yesterday and asked the girl if they had Fortaleza, Tequila Ocho. She said they were out of Fortaleza, i pointed to the glass case at the bottle sitting on the shelf, and she goes, well I guess we do have it but only one bottle per person.

 

Shit, I better start checking those cases better. How much does that go for by you?

 

Total wine doesn’t mark them up. It should be right at MSRP. Also, it’s worth asking at customer service. The ones by me don’t even put Fortaleza out, you have to ask and if they have any and it they do they will pull one from behind the counter.

That's not bad! I'll have to check at a few liquor stores on my way home. If all else fails, maybe I'll talk to the guy at City Spirits about getting a few bottles.

 

That’s MSRP, typically if you find it it’s at least $120 and I’ve seen it for over $300.

 

I asked my liquor store about the possibility of ordering some. They said I'd have to buy a case, if they can even get it. Hopefully I'll hear from them this coming week. I might see if any of my friends want to go in on it.

My thought is to go with the Añejo. Hopefully they don't want to rake me over the coals too bad. Looking online, it appears that it generally gets a significant mark-up.

 

The same bottle i got at Total Wine for $56.00 is $140.00 at Old Town Liquor, that really chaps my hide.

 

I see that the online retailers seem to have big mark-ups. Hopefully my local guy will be able to get a case, even if it takes awhile. Otherwise, I might ask at Total Wine, since they probably have a little more buying power.
