    2012 4Runner Limited Silver
    Hi there.
I have a 2012 4Runner Limited which currently has 20" wheels and tire size of 245/60R20. I live in Colorado, and am often driving in snow/ice during the winter. I would like to put a good set of All-Terrain tires on my 4runner which would be good for both highway/summer and winter/snow conditions. The tires I would like to use are BF Goodrich ALL-TERRAIN T/A KO2 Tire Size: 265/70R17.

The problem with the 20" wheels is that there are not really any good all-terrain tires out there for 20" wheels, so I'm considering changing my wheels to 17", and need some advice on this....specifically:

    * what are the specs of the 17" wheels that I should be purchasing to be able to install on them BF Goodrich ALL-TERRAIN T/A KO2 Tire Size: 265/70R17?

    * what should the wheel offset be on the 17" rim (From online research that i've done, my current OEM 20" wheels have either a 12mm offset or a 15mm offset)

    * do i need to worry about other details such as wheel backspace?

    * If i purchase the 17" wheels, will there be any issues with installing BF Goodrich ALL-TERRAIN T/A KO2 Tire Size: 265/70R17?

    * any other advice/suggestions appreciated.

    Thx!

Here is a GREAT known Toyota based wheel manufacturer that makes some really affordable and good lookin' wheels. Check out their spec's for reference.

I ran scs wheels on my Tacoma and they are top notch. Equally as good for Toyota is FN Wheel. Do a google search, there is more styles available than what is on the website.

You don't sound like a wheel connoisseur, but more like a guy who wants / needs function. To that end, I would not buy any aftermarket wheels. Just get a set of take off Toyota 17" wheels from craigslist or similar. Any 17" Toyota 6 lug wheel will work and will maintain correct backspacing and allow you to use your lug nuts and TPMS. You should be able to snag a set for sub-$200, easily.

As an example, I got a set of take off TRD-OR wheels last year for $50.

As far as tires sizing and fitting them on a 17" wheel, you will have no issues putting the stock size BFGs on a stock size wheel.

I'm a total noob to this so just looking for advice. If I replace stock SR5 wheels with TRD Off Road wheels (both same size) and I'm keeping the stock tires, what has to happen as far as the TPMS? Dealer quoted me $400 to mount tires on the new wheels because they have to "reprogram the TPMS & that takes 3 hours

TPMS transfers over, no problem. No reprogramming needed.

I noticed that this post is from last November, and my hunch is my answer no longer matters...haha.

But...I also noticed that no one really answered your question. So allow me to answer and give to you my thoughts; they are in the order that you asked your questions:

    1) Specs: The "specs" are a personal choice; about the only thing to consider when buying 17" wheels (rims) is whether or not you want some offset. 17" K02s will fit on 17 inch rims, regardless of offset. (That is, when you see the sizing 265/70R17, the 17 (after the R) simply means the tire goes on a 17" rim
    2) Wheel offset: this is a personal choice and keep in mind that offset and backspace are related. Negative offset pushes the rim out toward the street and away from the vehicle, this makes the backspace one-half of the rim's width. I would start with no offset (or whatever your year model recommends with respect to its original engineering requirements) until you have a reason (or the manufacture's recommendation) to change the offset from center of the rim...my personal opinion
    3) Backspace: No, you don't need to worry about backspace, see previous answer. Get a 17" rim, get a 17" wheel; just start there
    4) Any Issues: No, see previous answers
    5) Other advice: My suggestion is to figure out what you are trying to accomplish--you mentioned highway/summer, winter/snow; this means you just want a good tire for all conditions, which tells me you know what you want and now it's just finding the right combination of tire and rim. I live in Colorado, too, and have a heavily modified 4runner, but it took many, many iterations and changes to my modifications to find what works best for me (the key there is that it "works best for me," you may be different. I had K02s originally (275s) and on 17 inch rims. It was a great combination and worked really well year-round. (I note here that I had a 2" spacer lift originally, and the 275s slightly rubbed). I now have 295s on 17" rims with Nitto Grapplers, but there is a very distinct reason for this.

Your choice of tire (K02s) is a good one; your choice in rim size (17") is also a good one. I recommend getting away from backspace and offset questions until you've outgrown (if ever) your current driving needs. For a daily driver, you choices (again) of tire and rim are good ones. If you start to go off road more, then reach out and we can have a more in-depth conversation on other modifications.

Hi - thank you for this comprehensive answer.
I am also considering doing the exact same to my 2012 Limited 4Runner, namely switching to 17 inch wheels for the same reason as dwboulder, namely to be able to fit more aggressive offroad tires on teh limited.

I do have the following question though - with switching to say a set of 17inch rims and the BFG K02's, will the total wheel diameter remain the same? If not, could this have an effect on say something like the speedometer having an incorrect reading?

    Thanks
