Coming from a gen 3 Tacoma I enjoyed having the wireless charger built in. Not necessarily a necessity, but it is a nice feature to have.

So I started thinking the bottom tray would be perfect for a wireless charger. I searched around and only found one thread on another site. I decided to try it myself and it definitely turned out great!

To start I purchased this wireless charger because of the shape fits perfectly under the tray and the 3 coils allow the phone to sit in there and charge without having to be positioned.

These are all the things that were required:

    Charger-
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B078HV3V6M?ie=UTF8

    12v to 5v adapter-
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00U2DGJD2?ref=yo_pop_mb_yo_pop_mb_pd_t2

    Mounting tape-
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005SRECEU?ref=yo_pop_mb_yo_pop_mb_pd_t2

After removing the side pieces on the dash which just pull out I unscrewed the lower tray area and wiggled it out. Once removed I found that the wireless charger is strone enough that it can transmit through the plastic without even having to remove the housing on the wireless charger.

This was a simple mod, I placed the mounting tape on the top of the wireless charger and placed it in the center of the bottom of the tray. After that just plug in the adapter and then wire it to the back of the cigarette lighter. If you have a soldering iron it’ll work better as you can secure the wires better. But I imagine you can get creative too.

Here are some photos of the finished product.

Just toss my iPhone in the tray and it instantly starts charging.

Great idea and good execution on your part!

    2 questions:
    - did you use the right angle usb adapter?
    - how do the two trim pieces on the sides of the center console come off? do they pull out towards the back of the vehicle or out to the side towards the doors?

I did use the right angel USB adapter.

The two trim pieces are tight so they are tough to get out at first. I pulled from the bottom until I could get my fingers in there to work to the top. They just pull straight out. As does everything in the center dash like a bunch of lego pieces.

What kind of phone do you have? Just curious as I have a Galaxy Note 8 and it doesn't fit in the pocket. Curious as to if it would charge with my phone sitting in there diagonal.

iPhone X, you can test your phone if you own a wireless charger and see if it’ll charge from different directions. The charger I chose for the mod has 3 charging coils so any part of the surface will charge if it contacts the charging panel on the phone.

Curious....Because there's a bunch of material between the coils to the phone, does the charging rate slow down??

I have a spigen phone case on as well...

Nope I did not notice any decrease in charging. I also have a case it’s a plastic clear back case.

I’ve taken apart a wireless charger while experimenting with this and the coils sit pretty close to the top plastic. Not much between them.

oh this is clever. I like it. Wonder if you can order the rubber mat from the 5th gen taco's to fit it in place. When I had my taco it really held the phone in place real grippy rubber

I doubt it would fit. I just ordered a sheet of talon grips and cut it to fit. Phone doesn’t go anywhere.

I just tried this mod. I tried mounting it underneath as you did. Mine was hitting a bracket underneath and wouldn’t fit. I then drilled a hole on the left side of the compartment to fish the plug through. The light on the charger shows this way. I was concerned I would forget my phone if I put in the tray alone. With the light it reminds me it’s in their. I prefer it actually. I never used the area before. So having that charger in the spot doesn’t bother me.

Love this idea big time. I going to do it with one additional mod. Buying a OEM Qi on/off switch from Toyota. Run a new wire from the fuse panel. (guessing maybe a 3amp fuse) Mount the new switch in a blank slot and run the wiring through the switch. This will give me an on/off option and it's own power source. OP, thanks for the links and the idea. Anybody have a better idea of the fuse amperage to use?

I'm getting the parts in from Amazon today. I think I'm gonna see if it can be mounted in the vertical slot alongside the shifter. I have a Samsung s8 and is a tight fit with a case in the OPs original spot.

I like the shifter slot idea a lot. My iPhone 8 Plus doesn't fit well in the lower dash slot so I haven't installed my parts for it yet.

I got it all pulled apart and wired into the cigarette lighter. Im just waiting on the charger. Should be here in the next couple of hours. If it works out well I'll put one on the other side of the slot so I can charge 2 phones screen to screen.

Welp, I found out that due to the cup holder protruding into the slot the vertical spot won't work. It holds the phone just far enough that it wont charge. Im gonna move it to the OPs spot later today. I'm not willing to give up my cup holder insert lol.

do you ever find that the phone over-heats while charging in that confined space with the wireless charger?

does the phone ever overheat while charging? I now have wireless carplay from a 3rd party dongle and would love to install wireless charging like you did
