Hey all, I just picked up a 2020 4Runner with 80k miles. Car passed a full head to toe inspection except a leaky cv axel. Was cruising around 30mph and I got 3 messages. ABS system malfunction, Pre collision system malfunction and Braking power low. I parked for about 10 minutes then put it in drive and all messages went away and car is braking normally. Anyone know what’s going on?

How bad is your axle leaking? Could have screwed up your wheel speed sensor.

Have a picture of the leak?

have an obd2 scanner? There should be some stored info that will help diagnose

Welcome. That is not normal. I’d definitely get under there and see how bad the leak is. Maybe what caused the issue with the CV axles also damaged the sensor or wiring. If you’re in Utah, I can take a look at it on my lift.

"They" are idiots. It is not common, nor is it normal. Depending on whether it's the inboard or outboard joint, it could be slinging grease on your wheel speed sensor. Also depending on whether or not the boot is cut or cracked, you might be able to replace the boot before the joint is toast. You can buy aftermarket boot clamps. It also may just be a case of them needing to be tightened up.

CV axle leak isn't normal at 80k unless the 4Runner is lifted and/or off-roaded, which are appropriate activities for a 4Runner but will wear out parts quicker. Could be a wheel bearing on the way out, mud in the wheel bearing cavity contaminating the ABS sensor, damaged ABS sensor wire... A good scan tool that can read ABS module codes will be able to narrow down the issue.

Just had this happen with the lights. Was a low battery voltage. Replaced battery and all fine. Could also be gas cap (doubt it on your car with 2 years old). Or could be wheel speed sensor. CV axle can have a new boot put on it - not a big deal.

Gas cap would not cause abs issues.

I understand that. Other members and on other forums have noted a faulty gas cap can throw lights off on the dash. Just one yet limited option to list for full transparency. Try being constructive instead of just critical.

I would have had the seller or dealer completely take care of that leaky CV axle issue after the inspection before taking possession. But that’s just me.
