TRD Pro vs Off road with KDSS

    Since I’m not quite so one dimensionally focused, the following that aren’t available on an ORP matter to me and are things I would likely have paid for if they were all stand alone options, just like you decided to pay to add other aftermarket items to suit YOUR usage and preference. Notice that it’s not just the sound system as you have repeated several (or more) times.
    • Auto headlights
    • Dual zone automatic climate control
    • TRD Front skid plate
    • TRD Roof rack
    • Fox Shocks
    • Mutli-terrain monitor
    • JBL sound system
    • Remote start
    • All terrain tires
    • All weather floor liners

    Does that 3 letter word really bother you that much? Get over it man!

    You got the one with Off Road in the name. Seems like that is what you wanted.

    TRD is Toyota Racing Development, so I guess we’ve all been had by the marketers since no trim level 4Runner has anything to do with racing…

    Yes they are. Canadian models are all Takara factory installed options on ORPs. Dual climate, remote start, auto headlights and high beams, heated seats and moon roof. They all come this way. At least in '22. I am not aware of any port installed options. Maybe the running boards but I doubt it as they are not the Predators.

    The Pro does literally every other function of a vehicle better than a Rubicon except extreme off roading. I get that you can’t think beyond that small percentage of use case and grasp that for most people, well over 90%, and probably over 99% of their vehicle usage is not on something similar to the Rubicon Trail. Stop trying to force your use case onto every other owner of a 4Runner.

    A stock Jeep Rubicon is better off road that your modified 4Runner, so what are you doing in that 4Runner???

    Well you just listed a whole bunch of non offroad features that the TRD Pro is pro in. You're just proving my point, Pro doesn't mean anything offroad.

    Rubicon's transfer case alone is enough to make it stand out off-road, forget about it's other off-road features

    Hence it’s not called TRD Off-Road Pro…..

    It’s Pro at being the best all around 4x4 with added features across the board, not just in the one dimension YOU care about.

    Here are the features that are off-road related, since you missed them in the full listing.

    • Fox Shocks
    • Mutli-terrain monitor
    • All terrain tires

    I know this, but I’m not focused on that kind of off-roading so I wasn’t interested in buying a Rubicon or any Jeep. Sounds like you are so perhaps you should have bought a Rubicon since you talk about them here quite a lot despite nobody else bring them into the conversation.

    Dude, you're just not trying to get my point. TRD Pro to TRD Off-road is not what Rubicon is to Willy's. And it sucks given the price difference and the markups.

    And literally nobody except you and a couple of your Pro’s suck disciples trying to prove some point to Pro Owners here states anything along the lines that the TRD Pro is the 4Runner equivalent of the Rubicon. Stop trying to make a point about comparing trims across two different vehicles & brands that are not directly comparable. Forget about the damn Jeeps when the conversation is only about 4Runners. If you or anyone else has started an off topic discussion about Jeeps, then it’s a valid discussion point. Otherwise get over your lust for a Rubicon and trying to make your 4Runner as competitive with one off-road as you can.

    A 2019 TRD Pro with 30,000 miles had the same price as my brand new 2023 TRD off road premium with kdss. It sucks, don't you see that? It's ridiculous. And the stupid thing was also black, not some Voodoo Blue or something.

    Ummmm, I’m sorry that my trim level holds it’s value tremendously well, and your doesn’t to nearly the same extent??? That’s why you got a discount. The market, both new and used has confirmed what the overall population thinks each trim is worth on average. Seems lots of people value the non off-road features quite a bit even if you don’t.


    You should also check out this thread where the mighty ORP has the worst value retention of all 4Runners and the Pro the best…. Those stats seem to give good reason why the ORP has to be discounted and the Pro can get marked up. The discount/premium carries right over into the value down the road.

    Other than the different 4wd systems and lack of locker/off road controls on the limited, I’m actually curious of the differences as I don’t see that many from the limited that the pro doesn’t have.

    Did anyone say the stock pro is superior off road than a modified ORP?

    pro has comfort features that you can never get on any other trims than the limited. If you want these features with a more off road oriented truck than the limited then pro is the only choice available.

    also a pro can be just as good as any ORP if you put the same aftermarket parts. A US ORP will never be able to have the same comfort features as a pro. If you care about these comfort features, get a pro. If you don’t, get an an off road (non premium is even cheaper). It’s as easy as that!

    One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
    All a matter of personal priorities. I liked the dual climate controls on the Pro but hated the exhaust and fugly roof rack and the rest of the extra stuff didn’t mean much to us. KDSS and the extra +$5k for dual climate controls is what tipped the choice to ORP.

    You’re too focused on the word pro. For what it’s worth, I’d rather have mine be called off road or some other cool names than pro. (Actually I removed all the pro badges)

    That's not how journalists, reviewers and marketing folks think. They always bring the TRD Pro, "Toyota's best offroader", against Jeeps and Broncos, while it's the kdss that will do better against them.

    I also notice my Limited have more interior lights than Pro on the footwells. Also my Pro don't have turn signal indicators. Matching 5 tires and wheels vs Pro has different spare tire and wheel. May be I can also think about automatic running boards, parking sensors, 3rd row on my Limited vs Pro doesn't have.

    Rock crawling, yes I’d agree with you, the kdss will be ever so slightly better. High speed off-roading or dirt roads, the pro will be better than a stock ORP due to the fox shocks (even though majority of ORP upgrade with something better than pro fox).

    don’t mind journalists, you’re the one having fun with YOUR truck. Not them. Also, 90% of journalists nowadays are less informed than a serious buyer

    This is Toyota's best off-road 4Runner, and it should be marketed as such. Not many even know about KDSS offroad behavior

    Just a reminder gentleman, we all have good reasons to buy one trim over another. Even buy a cheaper SR5 over most expensive TRD Pro. Please don't take things to personal level. I've seen "pavement princes" Limited modified to insane offroad capable level.

    It's funny, actually I bought the kdss for its on road behavior which is super obvious. But few days later I realized damn this is a sway bar disconnect. So accidentally I ended up with the best off-roader lol.

    The previous 2 model years pro have turn signals on the mirrors. Not sure about foot wells but it’s probably not going to be a buying factor for anyone. 3rd row is a plus for some and a minus for others (i will NEVER use the 3rd row and value the extra rear space, others will want the opposite).

    I don’t consider the other points of being a plus for the limited over the pro but rather a plus for those who don’t go off road and a minus for those who do (tires and running boards).

    so really the only thing I consider “missing” (my opinion) on the pro is the sensors (although is it really needed when there is a 360 camera?)
