    Hi,

I have a 2023 5th gen 4 Runner with 20k km .Does anyone notice a tapping noise after you start your engine when the 4runner is been parked for a few hours during anytime of the day or night? I can notice a tapping sound coming from the engine for the first 5-10 mins after starting the engine. After i drive it or when the engine warm up the tapping sound goes away. I though at firs it was because of the cold weather, but these few weeks has been warm and still does the same thing. I didnt notice it before when i purchased it new.

I was wondering if anyone's 5th gen 4 runner does this also?

    Thanks

I change my oil every 4-5 thousand km . Full synthetic . I didn't really notice it when i first got it. After the new truck thrill is gone then i start to notice all these. Like i said the tapping sound is only in the beginning 8-10 minutes after starting and its not noticeable after. When the engine is fully warm it does not make the taping noise. Like i said this is even when the climate is warm.

most likely you have not noticed any tapping noise because at Tahari plant at Japan engine was filled with Toyota Genuine Motor oil - TGMO, for short - and you used something else. Mind, that synthetic base of oil is most important for temperature breakdown resistance, cold liquidity (easy to flow), but 1GR-FE needs original oil additives package, that only TGMO can provide. Oil is a wearable part of engine, like pads in brakes, like bearings in axles, and has to be treated as such. Tapping you hear is VVTi rotor slapping against stator - common sound for not using TGMO, hopefully without ill effects on engine longevity.

Oh please, not the magical Toyota oil nonsense! It's a typical sound, and using Toyota oil wouldn't have made a noticeable difference.

The engine in my 4Runner makes so many odd noises, that if I DIDN'T hear them, I would worry.

I tried TGMO once, it made zero difference in sound as compared to M1, Pennzoil, Valvoline, etc.

I was disappointed, I had believed the hype.

I'm at 170k, the last 90k being with me using whatever happened to be on sale at the time and 9k-ish intervals. No problems, it doesn't leak or burn any between changes.

It's just a noisy engine. There's a lot of moving parts in the valvetrain, and Toyota didn't seem to have put much effort into NVH levels.

I think I read before somewhere that some tapping is from the VVTI.

Like everyone mentioned it's normal. It's better than the 3rd gen Tacoma. That 3.5 is louder with its direct injector.

"tried TGMO once" too late. what's done is done. defloration not reversible. T4R will run even on anything - that's the beauty of Japanese engineering. One T4R is noisy and another is not (all the same): what would you choose to buy?

Except when they're doing that fuel pump thing. Our bedroom is over the garage. Sometimes it wakes me up in the middle of the night.

This is what I do, start engine, turn on stereo to 20, look for a good old classic rock station, maybe the Guess Who in your case, roll down window, hang elbow out, wave or flip off neighbors as I drive by.

Roller rockers on the dual-VVTi 4.0L. But roller rockers rely on oil pressure to take up valve lash. Maybe that isn't happening when the oil is cold.
